FY2011 Annual Report Research, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Technology Transfer Activities

Transportation research makes a difference for Iowans and the nation. Implementation of cost-effective research projects contributes to a transportation network that is safer, more efficient, and longer lasting. Working in cooperation with our partners from universities, industry, other states, and FHWA, as well as participation in the Transportation Research Board (TRB), provides benefits for every facet of the DOT. This allows us to serve our communities and the traveling public more effectively. Pooled fund projects allow leveraging of funds for higher returns on investments. In 2011, Iowa led thirteen active pooled fund studies, participated in twenty-one others, and was wrapping-up, reconciling, and closing out an additional 6 Iowa Led pooled fund studies. In addition, non-pooled fund SPR projects included approximately 8 continued, 9 new, and over a dozen reoccurring initiatives such as the technical transfer/training program. Additional research is managed and conducted by the Office of Traffic and Safety and other departments in the Iowa DOT.

State of Iowa Affirmative Action/Diversity Plan and Report, FY2008

Each department will submit by July 31st an Affirmative Action/Diversity Plan to DAS, who will receive it on behalf of the Diversity Council. This document is to report on your activities and accomplishments for FY 2008, and report on your intended activities for FY 2009. For the purposes of this document, the term protected classes refers specifically to females, minorities, and persons with disabilities. Protected classes may be subject to numerical goal setting in employment. The term diversity includes the protected classes, but also includes broader differences, such as age, sexual orientation, and religion. These differences are not subject to numerical goal setting in employment, but may be protected by non-discrimination statutes and policies. Investigation of Steel-Stringer Bridges: Superstructures and Substructures, Volume II, TR-522, 2007

Problems with unknown bridge foundations in Iowa are often associated with timber substructures. Timber piles are subject to biological and physical deterioration, which makes quantifying in-service pile capacity difficult. Currently there are no reliable means to estimate the residual carrying capacity of an in-service deteriorated pile; and thus, the overall safety of the bridge cannot be determined. The lack of reliable evaluation methods can lead to conservative and costly maintenance practices. This research study was undertaken to investigate procedures for assessing bridge substructures, and evaluating procedures for rehabilitating/strengthening/replacing inadequate substructure components. The report includes an extensive literature review, a field reconnaissance study of 49 bridges, a survey of substructure problems from the perspective of County Engineers, a laboratory study aiming to correlate nondestructive tests to residual pile strength and stiffness values, nondestructive and destructive load tests for 6 bridges with poor substructures, and finally a laboratory study evaluating selected repair methods.
