Emission Control in Diesel Engines by Alcohol Fumigation, 1990

Exhaust emissions from diesel engines are a substantial source of air pollution in this country. In recognition of this fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has issued strict new regulations due to take effect -in 1991 and 1994 that will drastically reduce the amount of some pollutants these engines will be allowed to emit. The technology is not currently available to produce diesel engines that can meet these regulations without large penalties in engine performance and efficiency. One technique that offers promise of being able to reduce emissions from both existing engines and new engines is alcohol fumigation.

This Handbook has been prepared by the Iowa DOT as a guide and supplement to the MUTCD. It provides in one document a large number of illustrations which can be easily adapted to specific conditions by field personnel. It is intended to supersede all previous non-conforming standards now being used throughout the state and to provide uniform guidelines for all agencies, public and private, who must conduct construction and maintenance activities on the streets and highways of the state. The illustrations contained herein serve as a quick reference for field personnel to follow, however, no amount of detailed instructions can adequately cover every situation. For this reason, sound judgment is required in using these illustrations to cover actual field conditions.

Evaluation of control devices for asphalt pavement recycling operations : summary report for research project HR-188, 1982

The objective of the research project was to seek acceptable solutions to the air pollution problem created in the asphalt recycling process using modified conventional equipment.
