An Architectural and Historical Survey of Public Libraries in Iowa 1870-1940, 1980

The public library movement f the early twentieth century was a national phenomenon, in which Iowa, along with its neighboring states, played a prominent role. In 1900, the Iowa Library Commission noted 48 free public libraries in the state. Today there are approximately 500, in towns ranging in size from Beaman, with a population of 222, the Des Moines, the state capitol. Iowans took enthusiastic advantage of Andre Carnegie's library philanthropy. In 1919, the Carnegie Corporation stopped funding libraries, 101 building has been erected in Iowa with Carnegie funds. Iowa place fourth among the states in terms of the number of communities obtaining Carnegie buildings, fifth in dollar appropriation per one hundred population and eighth in the total amount of money given by Carnegie to a state. These figures provide some measure by which interest in popular education among Iowans of the period can be judged. Today these early libraries, often the most distinctive public libraries in small or medium-sized towns, are physical foci in the townscapes of their communities and centers for a variety of educational and social activities. This survey was initiated by the Division of Historic Preservation in 1977. It grew out of the need to provide a framework within which libraries could be evaluated for National Register action. Several libraries (Des Moines, Grinnell, Eagle Grove, Carroll) has been recent candidates for the Register. There was every indication that enthusiasm for old library buildings was increasing and that more nominations could be expected in the future. The attrition rate among early library buildings was (and is) growing. Most libraries were built on limited budgets (Carnegie did not squander his money) and, despite the fact that future expansion was usually a conscious consideration in their design, they are rapidly becoming obsolete, due to expanding collections and changing styles of librarianship. The Battle of Shiloh,1911.

This book is a detailed account of the Battle of Shiloh, written by Joseph W. Rich with an introduction by Benjamin F. Shambaugh. Eleven Iowa Regiments took part in this Civil War engagement that took place on April 6-7, 1862 in Tennessee. Iowa had more men in the conflict, in proportion to is population than any other state.

Evauation of Recycled Asphalt Concrete Pavements: Final Report for Kossuth County, Iowa, HR-1888, February 1980

After some success with a small asphalt pavement recycling project in 1975, Kossuth County, Iowa programmed a much larger undertaking during the 1976 construction season. The work performed in 1975 indicated that a quality product could be produced with some modifications to conventional equipment. As anticipated , the major problem encountered was the excessive air pollution created during the heating and mixing process. As part of its 1976 road program, Kossuth County developed plans for recycling sixteen miles of existing asphalt pavements using the "hot mix" recycling process. One project, ten miles in length, was selected by the Federal Highway Authority as part of "Demonstration Project No. 39, Recycling Asphalt Pavements." The FHWA provided a $29,500 grant t o the project to be used for project testing and evaluation. Cooperation and input into the work proposed for 1976 was received from many sources. The people and organizations contributing were the Federal Highway Authority, the Iowa Department of Environmental Quality, the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, several contractors, and personnel from the Kossuth County Engineer's Office.

Evaluation of 1977 Asphalt Concrete Sprinkle Treatments, December 1980

Iowa's first sprinkle treatment in 1974 was applied to a short section of old US 30 west of Ames. A roll type seal coat spreader was used to apply several types of sprinkle aggregates. The following year a spinner type tailgate spreader was used for sprinkle application of an Iowa 7 project in Webster County. Uniform spreading and tire marks were problems in these early projects. A special spinner spreader was built in 1976 and mounted on a truck specially equipped with smooth tires. This special unit was tested in early 1977 on a project that had been scheduled for 1976. Spinner type spreaders proved unacceptable due to non-uniformity of spreading.
