West Africans in the United States may face negative responses from people in their community because of the current Ebola outbreak. People may say bad things about you, or try to stop you or your family from everyday activities like work, school, shopping, or spending time with friends. This is known as stigma. Stigma mostly occurs because of fear—people fear Ebola and the disease is linked with a specific region of the world. You are not more at risk for Ebola because of your specific race or country of origin.

The Volunteer Ombudsman Program places volunteers in long-term care facilities across Iowa to assist the state’s team of Local Long- Term Care Ombudsmen carry out the duties of the Older Americans Act of 1965. The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates the Volunteer Ombudsman Program (VOP) to train and certify individuals who are interested in listening, empowering and serving as a voice for long-term care residents. Unlike facility volunteers, VOP volunteers do not assist residents with daily activities. Rather, they are responsible for making several unannounced visits to a specific facility each month to talk to residents and family members and identify concerns.

Although only a fraction of Iowans are Medicaid members, the changes coming to Iowa’s Medicaid system have the potential to significantly impact all Iowans, especially those who are dependent on others for care or assistance with daily activities. That’s because Iowa’s ability to transition to managed care is contingent upon ensuring that Medicaid members have an advocate when it comes to protecting their rights, health, safety and quality of care. Managed Care Ombudsman Program prepares to advocate for Iowa's Medicaid members. Iowa's Office of Substitute Decision Maker provides education, assistance.
