This report presents station descriptions and tables of peak stages and discharges for 259 continuous and partial-record gaging stations all of which are located at or within the boundaries of Iowa. contained in this report are not only the data for the annual flood series for each gaging station but also for the partial-duration series at those stations for which they could be obtained. This report has been designed to present a summary of the recorded data concerning floods in Iowa.

A new machine, the ROTO-MILL Profiler, became available in early 1976. This machine, manufactured by CMI Corporation of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma provides pavement surface Scarification at a much higher production rate than was previously possible. Iowa had the opportunity to observe and evaluate this machine on two separate sections of primary portland cement concrete pavement in October, 1976. The marked improvement in the profile index and the skid resistance indicates this machine may be considered a viable method for improving rideability and skid resistance of a roadway that is otherwise reasonably sound.

This project involved the evaluation of several aggregates previously rated poor to excellent with respect to skid resistance and certain mix design parameters. An open graded asphalt friction course was evaluated using 4 comparably graded aggregates: quartzite, fine grained limestone, coarse limestone and lightweight expanded shale. The performance investigations involved the verification of observations of the quartzite test sections, evaluation of the effect of blending the superior quartzite with a typical coarse grained-textured limestone, and the evaluation of the limestone. The effects of traffic on the aggregates used in the test sections were studied, as well as the relationship between asphalt content levels and traffic with respect to performance. The bond of the open graded friction course mixture was also evaluated. The SN performance of all test sections after sixteen months of exposure was found to be satisfactory in that none of the material combinations had polished to the point where unacceptable SN levels developed. When material combinations were compared, significant differences were noted.

Road Map Math is an instructional program for low-achieving students in grades four to twelve. It is helpful in teaching language arts, place geography, map reading and mathematics. This booklet was made in conjunction with Department of Public Instruction, Price Laboratory School at the University of Northern Iowa and the Planning and Research Division of the Iowa Department of Transportation.

The Iowa State Highway Commission initiated this research to evaluate a new lowering device for tower luminaires and a new concept of tower luminaire light distribution. Lighting at the West interchange of I-80, I-35, and I-235 in Polk County was also designated as an FHWA experimental project. As highway lighting has become more widely used, highway officials recognized the increasing importance of reducing safety hazards and improving aesthetic appearance of lighting installations. Also, lighting construction, energy, and maintenance costs were absorbing a larger share of the maintenance budget. A search began for a method of lighting whereby the fixed objects by the roadside could be eliminated or reduced in number, the costs could be reduced and the quality of lighting improved over existing methods. Lack of design data in this area illustrated the need for research.

The three miles of fibrous concrete resurfacing in Greene County, Iowa were placed in September and early October, 1973. It was recognized in advance that cracking and other performance characteristics of the fibrous concrete sections and of the control sections would be major factors in the evaluation of the project. A low level aerial survey was made of the old pavement. During construction of the resurfacing, the aerial survey was checked to insure that cracks in the old pavement were referenced to the 100 ft. station marks placed in the resurfacing. Crack surveys have been conducted on dates indicated below. Additional cracks found at each subsequent survey are shown in a color matching the date notation. April, 1974 November, 1974 October, 1975 October, 1976
