The effect of coarse aggregate gradation and cement content on strength of concrete was studied. Concrete made of Iowa Department of Transportation Standard Mix C-3 and Aggregate Gradation No. 3 were selected as reference. C-3 proportions were used for mixes #1 and #2. C-3 mix with 10% reduction of the cement content was used for mix #3. C-3 mix with 20% reduction of the cement content was used for mix #4. On the other hand, mix #1 used coarse aggregate of Gradation No. 3, while mixes #2, #3, and #4 used coarse aggregate mix of 65% concrete stone and 35% 3/8 in. chips. It was found that strengths of portland cement concrete decrease with decreasing cement factor. On the other hand, 35% of chip replacement for coarse aggregate increases strengths of concrete. By replacing 35% of coarse aggregate with chips, one could reduce cement factor 10% and achieve equivalent strengths.

In 1951 Greene County and the Iowa Highway Research Board paved County Road E-33 from Iowa Highway No. 17 (now Iowa 4) to Farlin with various thicknesses [ranging from 4.5 in. (11.4 cm) to 6 in. (15.2 cm)] of portland cement concrete pavement. The project, designated HR-9, was divided into ten research sections. This formed pavement was placed on the existing grade. Eight of the sections were non-reinforced except for centerline tie bars and no contraction joints were used. Mesh reinforcing and contraction joints spaced at 29 ft 7 in. (9.02 m) intervals were used in two 4.5-in. (11.4-cm) thick sections. The concrete in one of the sections was air entrained. Signs denoting the design and limits of the research sections were placed along the roadway. The pavement has performed well over its 28-year life, carrying a light volume of traffic safely while requiring no major maintenance. The 4.5-in. (11.4-cm) thick mesh-reinforced pavement with contraction joints has exhibited the best overall performance.

The durability of concrete is a most important aspect in pavement life. Deterioration of the interstate portland cement concrete pavement has prompted various studies of factors which may contribute to the durability. Studies of cores taken from deteriorated areas indicated that the larger particles of coarse aggregate may contribute greatly to the problem. This indication was mainly due to the analysis of the cracking pattern which showed that most of the cracks passed through the larger aggregates and the larger aggregate particles were more cracked than the smaller particles. The purpose of this project is to determine if the size of the coarse aggregate has a bearing on the durability of freeze and thaw beams. A secondary purpose of this project is to determine what effect the method of curing and proportions have on the durability of freeze and thaw beams.

Portland cement concrete is an outstanding structural material but stresses and cracks often occur in large structures due to drying shrinkage. The objective of this research was to determine the change in length due to loss of moisture from placement through complete drying of portland cement concrete. The drying shrinkage was determined for four different combinations of Iowa DOT structural concrete mix proportions and materials. The two mix proportions used were an Iowa DOT D57 (bridge deck mix proportions) and a water reduced modified C4 mix. Three 4"x 4"x 18" beams were made for each mix. After moist curing for three days, all beams were maintained in laboratory dry air and the length and weight were measured at 73°F ± 3°F. The temperature was cycled on alternate days from 73°F to 90°F through four months. From four months through six months, the temperature was cycled one day at 73°F and six days at 130°F. It took approximately six months for the concrete to reach a dry condition with these temperatures. The total drying shrinkage for the four mixes varied from .0106 in. to .0133 in. with an average of .0120 in. The rate of shrinkage was approximately .014% shrinkage per 1% moisture loss for all four mixes. The rate and total shrinkage for all four mixes was very similar and did not seem to depend on the type of coarse aggregate or the use of a retarder.
