This is the first in an annual series of in-depth surveys of the public library scene in Iowa. The report includes two main sections: an enlarged directory consisting of five separate smaller directories and an expanded library statistical survey.

Some information concerning the State Historical Society of Iowa,1910.

In recent years historical research seems to be the State Historical Society's main function, although it was formed with the principal functions of collection, preservation and exhibition. Now, instead of simply attempting to make the largest possible collection of historical materials in one place, this society will now endeavor to compile, publish and distribute accurate and scientific historical literature. The book also lists publications, information on the library and on membership.

The statistics are used at the local, regional, state, and national levels to compare library performance, justify budget requests, track library data over time, assist in planning and evaluation, and provide valuable information for grants and other library programs. The annual survey collects current information from 543 public libraries about public service outlets, holdings, staffing, income, expenditures, circulation, services, and hours open. Furthermore, it helps provide a total picture of libraries on a state and nationwide basis. This report is authorized by law (Iowa Code 256.51 (H)). Each of the 50 states collects public library information according to guidelines established by the Federal State Cooperative System for public library data (FSCS). The information contained in the Iowa Public Library Statistics is based on definitions approved by FSCS. Issue review : state funding for preschool.

The state provides funds for preschool programming through several annual and standing appropriations. The funds are received and managed by a variety of local and state entities, including local school districts, Area Education Agencies, or AEAs, the Child Development Coordinating Council, the Department of Education, and local early childhood Iowa boards. This document also provides limited information on the federally funded Head Start Program, the largest source of preschool funding in Iowa.

ICAN directory, 1991.

This directory provides information related to the Iowa Computer-Assisted Network (ICAN) sites and their associated libraries. ICAN is an interlibrary loan network which uses IBM-type computers to generate and fill requests for library resources.
