Iowa's secondary road network contains nearly 15,000 bridges which are less than 12 m (40 ft) long. Many of these bridges were built several decades ago and need to be replaced. Box culvert construction has proven to be an adequate bridge replacement technique. An alternative to box culverts is the Air-O-Form method of arch culvert construction. The Air-O-Form method has several potential advantages over box culvert construction. The new technique uses inflated balloons as the interior form in the construction of an arch culvert. Concrete is then shotcreted onto the balloon form to complete the arch culvert. The objective of the research project was to construct an air formed arch culvert to determine its applicability as an alternative county bridge replacement technique. The project had the following results: (1) The Air-O-Form method can be used to construct a structurally sound arch culvert; and (2) The method must become more economical if it is to compete with box culverts.

The textured concrete surface on all PCC primary paving projects (and when specified on secondary projects) is required to be grooved in a specified manner. The laboratory test for determining the efficiency index of concrete curing compounds is made on slabs that are not grooved. This short investigation was undertaken to determine any changes in the curing efficiency index when using various rates of application of curing compound on grooved concrete. Currently a 95 percent curing efficiency index is specified at an application rate of 15 square yards per gallon. Can this efficiency be achieved, and if so at what application rate, on grooved concrete? Grooving the concrete greatly increases the surface area and also causes the liquid curing compound to run off the high spots and collect in the grooves.

An Iowa D.O.T. Laboratory built machine was constructed for the chloride permeability testing of concrete by measuring electric current through a specimen between a salt solution and a base solution. This study had two purposes. The first was to evaluate the machine's performance. To do this, three concrete mixes were made consisting of different cement factors and water/cement ratios. Each mix was tested for chloride ion content by the 90- day salt ponding method and for chloride permeability at a 28-day cure by the permeability machine. The results from each test were evaluated to see if there was correlation between chloride ion content and the chloride permeability. It was determined that there was a correlation and that the permeability machine was satisfactory for determining chloride permeability in concrete. The second purpose of this study was to examine the effects that pozzolans have on the chloride permeability of concrete. Four mixes were made: one without any pozzolans as a control, one with class C fly ash, one with class F fly ash, and one with silica fume. Specimens from each mix were evaluated for chloride ion content by the 90-day salt ponding test and by the laboratory built machine for chloride permeability after curing 28 days. Specimens from these mixes were also taken from the salt ponding slabs after completion of the ponding test to examine the effect chloride ion content has on the operation of the chloride permeability machine. Specimens containing pozzolans were also examined for chloride permeability after a cure of 180 days. It was determined that the addition of pozzolans to concrete lowers the chloride permeability as measured by the permeability machine. Class F fly ash and silica fume in the concrete had a major effect in lowering the chloride permeability in concrete as measured by the permeability machine.

The 1982 cost of a two-inch asphaltic concrete overlay, with fabric, was an average of 85% of the cost of a three-inch overlay (see attached calculations). A structural number can be assigned to the extra inch of overlay, whereas it is doubtful that any number can be assigned to the fabric. The observations made on the projects in this report leave little reason to be optimistic on the use of fabrics under asphalt overlays. This is especially true of the Floyd, Dallas and Clarke county projects. A great amount of fabric is being used nationwide for this purpose, probably more from sales promotion than from actual documented performance. Full scale field testing is continuing each time a project is let utilizing fabric reinforcement under asphaltic concrete overlays. It has already become apparent that the use of fabrics in AC overlays is not always cost effective.
Use of Reagent Grade Versus Industrial Grade Trichlorethylene in Asphalt Recoveries, MLR-83-05, 1983

This is a continuation of a project initiated a year ago to determine any differences in test results on recovered asphalt cements caused by the use of industrial grade of solvent as compared with the reagent grade. AASHTO specifies the use of reagent grade of trichlorethylene, but the Laboratory uses industrial grade which costs much less. Last year this objective of the project was aborted when it was found that a larger difference in test results was obtained between the two distillation apparatuses than between the two solvents, Then all efforts were directed toward obtaining uniformity in test results between the apparatuses under the east hood as compared with that under the west hood. Considerable progress was made toward this end. (See report under this same title dated April 1982). The objective this year was to again evaluate the results when using both variables (apparatuses and solvents). Another objective developed later in this investigation; this was to determine any differences in test results on recovered asphalt cements caused by the use of reclaimed trichlorethylene (from the distillation process) as compared with the use of industrial grade of solvent. At the present time the reclaimed trichlorethylene is discarded. If the reclaimed solvent could be used for further recoveries, a considerable savings in solvent costs would result.
