End of Project Report to the Iowa Power Fund, October 31, 2008

The 2008 Biobased Industry Outlook Conference was held September 7-10 on the Iowa State University campus. Over 750 people attended the plenary sessions on the morning of September 8th; 580 people registered for the full conference. Sponsorships: $92,500 in sponsorships in addition to the IPF was secured for the conference (considered “match” to the IPF grant). Including the $11,250 IPF sponsorship ($12,500 minus overhead charges of $1,250), the total amount contributed for conference sponsorships was $103,750. A list of sponsors and the amount of sponsorship is listed in Appendix A. Sponsorship funds received from the Iowa Power Fund were used for supplies and materials. Please see Appendix B which documents the transfer of IPF grant funds internally at ISU and their use.

Improving Traffic Safety Culture in Iowa – Phase II, July 2013

Phase II of Improving Traffic Safety Culture in Iowa focuses on producing actions that will improve the traffic safety culture across the state, and involves collaboration among the three large public universities in Iowa: Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, and University of Iowa. More specifically, this second phase synthesizes the expert opinions solicited in Phase I with prevailing public views and/or opinions gathered from a follow-up survey on Iowa���s 2000 public opinion survey, which the University of Northern Iowa, Center for Social and Behavioral Research, administered. More recent data on the opinions of Iowans and of people nationally contrasted with past data will help better define the public’s position on top safety culture issues. This, in turn, will provide a better basis for developing actionable, fundable, and ultimately successful strategies that will make a tangible difference in improving traffic safety in Iowa.

2013 Iowa DOT Engineering Intern Development and Management Program, 13-464, 2013

The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) at Iowa State University (ISU) developed an internship mentoring program in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide additional mentorship to both student interns and Iowa DOT intern managers. April 20, 2011 THIS WEEK: Concerning the Settlement with the Capitol Commissioners BACKGROUND: The 1898 Official Register contains several pages dedicated to information taken directly from the Board of Capitol Commissioners reports. The Commissioners reports are hand-written ledgers that were summarized and transcribed into a book about that time. The book is several hundred pages and contains the biennial reports of the Commission submitted between the years of 1871 to 1886. It also contains the condensed report “Concerning the Settlement with the Capitol Commissioners” submitted to Governor Larrabee in July 1886. The facts included in the 1898 Official Register are found in that portion of the reports.

BACKGROUND: Iowa State Capitol Grounds Extension Project The Capitol extension project began about 1913. The purpose of the project was to purchase land surrounding the Capitol in order to improve the beauty of the grounds and obtain enough land to build new structures and alleviate the overcrowding in the Capitol. Senate File 538 levied a tax to pay for the purchase of the property. Van Buren and Wapello counties filed a suit against the state because it was believed by many people that this statewide tax was simply providing Des Moines with a “new park.” This case was argued before the Iowa Supreme Court and the photographs that follow are a portion of the brief filed with the Court.

Looking Back: Historical Hall, 1899-1904; State Historical, Memorial and Art Building, 1905-1999; Ola Babcock Miller Building, 1999-Present, June 2013

For more than 80 years, visitors to the Iowa State Historical, Memorial, and Art Building were treated to the state’s collection of historic documents, literature, portraits, and historical, geological, and archeological artifacts. Those who visited might have memories of the spectacular sand paintings by Iowan Andrew Clemens, the variety of taxidermy Iowa animals, the pioneer Conestoga wagon in the basement, the biplane hanging from the dome ceiling, the odd display by the medical library of things removed from stomachs, or the Native American display on the third floor. This booklet is a look back at the origins of the museum. It includes some of the Historical Department reports, legislation passed by the general assembly, newspaper and magazine articles, and photographs pertaining to the museum and library. It is not intended to be an exhaustive review and documentation of displays and exhibits. It is a brief overview of the building’s history and some photographs that may bring back memories, for some, of a field trip as a student. This booklet has been created from a variety of source materials: photographs, newspaper articles, and various reports. The following have contributed: State Library of Iowa, Iowa State Historical Society, the Iowa Judicial Branch, Susan Wallace, Helen Dagley, Barb Corson, Jerome Thompson, Pam Rees, Georgiann Fischer, and Jason Mrachina.
