More and more, integral abutment bridges are being used in place of the more traditional bridge designs with expansion releases. In this study, states which use integral abutment bridges were surveyed to determine their current practice in the design of these structures. To study piles in integral abutment bridges, a finite element program for the soil-pile system was developed (1) with materially and geometrically nonlinear, two and three dimensional beam elements and (2) with a nonlinear, Winkler soil model with vertical, horizontal, and pile tip springs. The model was verified by comparison to several analytical and experimental examples. A simplified design model for analyzing piles in integral abutment bridges is also presented. This model grew from previous analytical models and observations of pile behavior. The design model correctly describes the essential behavioral characteristics of the pile and conservatively predicts the vertical load-carrying capacity. Analytical examples are presented to illustrate the effects of lateral displacements on the ultimate load capacity of a pile. These examples include friction and end-bearing piles; steel, concrete, and timber piles; and bending about the weak, strong, and 45° axes for H piles. The effects of cyclic loading are shown for skewed and nonskewed bridges. The results show that the capacity of friction piles is not significantly affected by lateral displacements, but the capacity of end-bearing piles is reduced. Further results show that the longitudinal expansion of the bridge can introduce a vertical preload on the pile.

Iowa's first field application of synthetic engineering fabrics was on research project HR-158, "Prevention of Reflective Cracking in Asphalt Overlays". This research placed in September 1971 used three different engineering fabrics. A final report concluding generally favorable performance was distributed in May 1977. There have been a number of Iowa engineering fabric installations since that initial project.

All noncomplying penetration and absolute viscosity results must be verified before being reported. This verification of test results is done by reheating and retesting the identical sample that is suspect. The District Laboratories are required to submit penetration and absolute viscosity correlation samples to the Central Laboratory. These samples are the identical ones tested by the District Laboratories. When the Central laboratory tests these correlation samples they are also considered to be reheated and retested. Reheating a sample will harden the asphalt to some degree and possibly cause a change in the test results. This investigation was conducted to determine how much change in penetration and absolute viscosity could be expected by reheating and retesting asphalt samples.

The focus of highway runoff monitoring programs is on the identification of highway contributions to nonpoint source degradation of surface and groundwater quality. The results of such studies will assist the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) in the development of maintenance practices that will minimize the impact of highway transportation networks on water quality while at the same time maintaining public safety. Highway runoff monitoring research will be useful in developing a basis to address issues in environmental impact statements for future highway network expansions. Further, it will lead to optimization of cost effectiveness/environmental factors related to de-icing, weed and dust control, highway drainage, construction methods, etc. In this report, the authors present the data accumulated to date with a preliminary interpretation of the significance of the data. The report will discuss the site setup, operational aspects of data collection, and problems encountered. In addition, recommendations are included to optimize information gained from the study.

The purpose of this manual is to provide guidelines for low water stream crossings (LWSC). Rigid criteria for determining the applicability of a LWSC to a given site are not established nor is a 'cookbook" procedure for designing a LWSC presented. Because conditions vary from county to county and from site to site within the county, judgment must be applied to the suggestions contained in this manual. A LWSC is a stream crossing that will be flooded periodically and closed to traffic. Carstens (1981) has defined a LWSC as "a ford, vented ford (one having some number of culvert pipes), low water bridge, or other structure that is designed so that its hydraulic capacity will be insufficient one or more times during a year of normal rainfall." In this manual, LWSC are subdivided into these same three main types: unvented fords, vented fords and low water bridges. Within the channel banks, an unvented ford can have its road profile coincident with the stream bed or can have its profile raised some height above the stream bed.

This report is a brief overview of the recent Iowa Department of Transportation research in the area of durability of Portland cement, concrete under the direction of Wendeli Dubberke. Present plans are to publish a more detailed report on low Portland cement concrete- durability research in January, 1985.
