Looking Back: Historical Hall, 1899-1904; State Historical, Memorial and Art Building, 1905-1999; Ola Babcock Miller Building, 1999-Present, June 2013

For more than 80 years, visitors to the Iowa State Historical, Memorial, and Art Building were treated to the state’s collection of historic documents, literature, portraits, and historical, geological, and archeological artifacts. Those who visited might have memories of the spectacular sand paintings by Iowan Andrew Clemens, the variety of taxidermy Iowa animals, the pioneer Conestoga wagon in the basement, the biplane hanging from the dome ceiling, the odd display by the medical library of things removed from stomachs, or the Native American display on the third floor. This booklet is a look back at the origins of the museum. It includes some of the Historical Department reports, legislation passed by the general assembly, newspaper and magazine articles, and photographs pertaining to the museum and library. It is not intended to be an exhaustive review and documentation of displays and exhibits. It is a brief overview of the building’s history and some photographs that may bring back memories, for some, of a field trip as a student. This booklet has been created from a variety of source materials: photographs, newspaper articles, and various reports. Meskwaki Tribal Court Interim Study Committee : final report, 2007

This is the final report on the Meskwaki Tribal Court Study Committee that was charged with continuing the work from previous legislative sessions to determine the proper manner for the Iowa Court system to recognize civil judgements, decrees, and orders issued by the Meskwaki Tribal Court.

One hundred topics in Iowa history, 1914.

Dr. Dan Elbert Clark compiled and Benjamin F. Shambaugh edited this edition of a list of Iowa history topics, which originally was suggested by Miss Alice Tyler, Secretary of the Iowa Library Commission in 1907. It is also called Bulletin of Information Series, no. 7 published by the State Historical Society of Iowa. The subjects presented will give the reader a general knowledge of the more important facts and phases of Iowa's commonwealth history. Also included in this document are lists of authors of the articles sited, suggested courses of study or reading in Iowa history, the Governor's of Iowa, United State Senators from Iowa and a list of some of the important dates in early Iowa history.

Pageantry for Iowa Communities, 1923

George O. Hurley is the author and Ben J. Shambaugh is the editor of this document, which is also called Bulletin of Information Series No.10 published by the State Historical Society of Iowa. The purpose of this bulletin is to offer a practical discussion of some of the problems involved in the writing, organization and production of a community pageant which is defined as a community institution, such as churches, schools, chambers of commerce, woman's clubs, lodges and other organizations may us pageantry to advantage and profit. A bibliography is included.

Report:Ansel Briggs Project, May 1975.

In June of 1974 Governor Robert Ray approved Senate File 1325, an Act passed by the Sixty-fifth General Assembly which directed the State Historical Society of Iowa to utilize the sum of $2,500 "For the planning and study of a memorial to Ansel Briggs, the first governor of Iowa." This is the final report on all of the information that was compiled during the intense research done on the Governor. This report includes information on his ancestry and personal life, photos, governorship, correspondence, documents, monuments and much more.

This reference guide was designed to facilitate the study of Iowa history and includes useful lists of references on many topics. It was compiled by William J. Petersen and is part of the Bulletin of Information: no. 17, edited by John Ely. It was published by the State Historical Society of Iowa

Three faces of Midwestern isolationism,1981.

The papers presented in this volume were delivered at a conference held on April 2, 1980, in Iowa City under the sponsorship of the Center for the Study of the Recent History of the United States, a cooperative undertaking involving the State Historical Society of Iowa, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, and the University of Iowa. The institutions were working together to make a larger contribution to the study of the history of the United States in the 20th century.

NLG Museum Connecting to Collections, Statewide Planning Grant, Developing a Statewide Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan for Iowa, Final report.

The Iowa Conservation and Preservation Consortium, Iowa Museum Association, the State Historical Society of Iowa and the State Library requested the IMLS CTC grant funds so we could develop a statewide plan to help the stewards of cultural property plan for protection and disaster recovery of collections. We are very pleased with the results of our grant activities. Thanks to the IMLS CTC grant over 200 Iowa collection care takers have received basic training in disaster preparedness and response, 24 care takers have signed up to become cultural collection first responders, a dozen disaster planning/response trainers are available upon request, and over 40 institutions have ReAct Paks. We have created a variety of training tools ranging from basic awareness to in-depth training, established a website of disaster resources, and geo-referenced hundreds of cultural collection sites around Iowa. In addition, the IMLS grant was just the motivator we needed to participate in other national/international efforts which in turn strengthened our IMLS grant project.
