Traveling Iowa’s byways you will experience small town America, while enjoying diverse landscapes and unique landforms that have been shaped over thousands of years. Iowa’s cultural heritage also plays a major role across all 11 byways, boasting hundreds of historic sites, national landmarks and interpretive centers, each telling Iowa’s stories from the first Native Americans through European immigrants to modern times. Glaciers once covered much of Iowa, shaping the broad flat plains of the prairie. These massive sheets of ice missed the northeast corner of the state, leaving the land along the Driftless Area Byway rugged and hilly with rock outcroppings, springs and cold water trout streams. Rivers coursed their way through the land, carving deep furrows in some places and leaving gently rolling hills in others. In western Iowa, wind has shaped fine sand into the impressive Loess Hills, a rare land form found in only one other place on earth. Iowa’s two national scenic byways and nine state byways offer unique varieties of scenic features, and more for you to see and do. View three states from atop a Mississippi River bluff, stop at a modern art museum and then tour a working farm. Explore a historic mill, visit a national aquarium, take a boat ride in a cave, purchase locally crafted pottery and wares from local artisans or trace the footsteps of Lewis and Clark. Experience the actual wagon ruts of the Mormon Trail, ride your bike 13 stories high, canoe a water trail, star gaze under Iowa’s darkest sky, and marvel at mounds built by prehistoric cultures. This publication is designed to help identify the most common trees found in Iowa. It is based on vegetative characteristics including leaves, fruit, and bark. It is neither complete nor without possible oversights. Separate species are grouped by similar characteristics, mainly based on type and arrangement of leaves. These groups are; awl- or scale like needles; single needles, flattened with rounded tips; single needles, square in cross section, with pointed tips; and needles in bundles or fascicles of two or more. Remember, vegetative characteristics are quite variable; use more than one specimen for comparison.

Pest Alert: Emerald Ash Borer, September 2008

A beetle from Asia, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), was identified in July 2002 as the cause of widespread ash (Fraxinus spp.) tree decline and mortality in southeastern Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Larval feeding in the tissue between the bark and sapwood disrupts transport of nutrients and water in a tree, eventually causing branches and the entire tree to die. Tens of millions of ash trees in forest, rural, and urban areas have already been killed or are heavily infested by this pest.

The Gypsy moth is a serious pest of trees ans shrubs. It damages the plants when the caterpillar stage eats the leaves. When there are many caterpillars, They defoliate entire trees, which can weaken and sometimes kill the trees. The gypsy moth is a notorious hitchhiker; it has been brought into Iowa on recreations vehicles and nursery stock. Learning the recognize the gypsy moth is an important part of preventing infestations and severe damage to Iowa's forests, woodlands, and urban landscapes.

2014 Iowa Woodland Suitability Recommendations, February 6, 2014

In 2005, the Iowa NRCS and Iowa DNR agreed to create new groupings of soils and revise the recommendations for tree and shrub species for those soil groups in Iowa. There were several reasons for this revision: there were errors in the previous recommendations; there were new soils identified and mapped; and both agencies wanted a user-friendly system for employees and the public to use.
