Evidence Review 8 - Improving access to green spaces Briefing 8 - Improving access to green spaces This pair of documents, commissioned by Public Health England, and written by the UCL Institute of Health Equity, address the role of green space in improving health locally. The first part of the evidence review defines ‘accessible’ green space and provides an overview of the evidence linking access to green spaces with health benefits, setting out the potential for reducing health inequalities. The second part provides an overview of interventions implemented at the local level to increase equitable access and use of good quality green spaces. Local authorities and local organisations have taken action on these issues through the implementation of interventions to: 1. Create new areas of green space and improve the quality of existing green spaces 2. Increase accessibility, engagement and use of green spaces The full evidence review and a shorter summary briefing are available to download above. This document is part of a series. Smoke Free Spaces: Progress in reducing exposure to second-hand smoke in Northern Ireland incorporating the five year review of smoke-free legislation

This report provides an overview of progress in reducing Second Hand Smoke (SHS) exposure in Northern Ireland that incorporates the five year review of smoke-free legislation, but also extends to a consideration of SHS exposure in non-work environments.  The report considers aspects of inequalities in SHS exposure in particular according to social disadvantage and with a focus on vulnerable subgroups of the population.

Health and the Built Environment, Sources of Information

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) has produced a series of reviews which look at the health impacts of identified subject areas. Four reviews have been produced in the areas of employment, transport, the built environment and education. All reviews may be found at http://www.publichealth.ie/ireland/hiaresources. This resource supplements the ‘Health Impacts of Built Environment’ report. It highlights a number of organisations whose work considers issues relevant to the relationship between health and built environment.

Health Impacts of the Built Environment: A review

This review is the third in the series and illustrates how the built environment impacts on health. It also highlights the unequal distribution of these impacts on different sections of the population. We hope it will help inform debate about the links between the built environment and health and be a useful resource for those working to influence public policy for health at local and national level across the island. The review has an extensive reference list. To supplement the health impacts of the built environment review a 'sources of information' list has been developed which highlights a number of organisations whose work considers issues relevant to the relationship between health and the built environment.
