Further Education and Training Strategy 2014-2019

he first ever strategy for the Further Education and Training (FET) sector is being launched by the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruair�_ Quinn T.D., and Minister of State for Training and Skills Ciarn Cannon T.D. The overall aim of the Strategy is to develop a world-class integrated system of further education and training in Ireland, which will promote economic development and meet the needs of all citizens. The new strategy was developed by SOLAS with assistance from the ESRI which was commissioned to carry out evidence based research and assist in the development of the Strategy. Five high level strategic goals have been identified: -Skills for the Economy: to address the current and future needs of learners, jobseekers, employers and employees and to contribute to national economic development -Active Inclusion: to support the active inclusion of people of all abilities in society with special reference to literacy and numeracy -Quality Provision: to provide high quality education and training programmes and to meet the appropriate national and international quality standards -Integrated Planning and Funding: FET provision will be planned and funded on the basis of objective analysis of needs and evidence of social and economic impact -Standing of FET: to ensure a valued learning path leading to agreed employment, career, developmental, personal and social options. Health Impact Review - Sources of information reports

To support each of the IPH series of Health Impact Reviews, a sources of information report is now avalable for each of the four reports. These provide links to organisations who have conducted a wealth of information related to health and either employment, transport, education or the built environment.

WHO health topic: women's health.

Being a man or a woman has a significant impact on health, as a result of both biological and gender-related differences. The health of women and girls is of particular concern because, in many societies, they are disadvantaged by discrimination rooted in sociocultural factors. For example, women and girls face increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Some of the sociocultural factors that prevent women and girls to benefit from quality health services and attaining the best possible level of health include: * unequal power relationships between men and women; * social norms that decrease education and paid employment opportunities; * an exclusive focus on women’s reproductive roles; and * potential or actual experience of physical, sexual and emotional violence. While poverty is an important barrier to positive health outcomes for both men and women, poverty tends to yield a higher burden on women and girls’ health due to, for example, feeding practices (malnutrition) and use of unsafe cooking fuels (COPD).This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Northern Ireland Infectious Disease Incident / Outbreak Plan 2013

The new Northern Ireland Infectious Disease Outbreak Plan 2013 developed by the Public Health Agency in liaison with Trust and DHSSPS colleagues. The Plan is based on the most up-to-date guidance available on leading and managing an incident or outbreak, and was developed as part of the implementation of the RQIA Review of Outbreaks of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Neonatal Units in Northern Ireland, 2012.

Health and Employment, Sources of Information

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) has produced a series of reviews which look at the health impacts of identified subject areas. Four reviews have been produced in the areas of employment, transport, the built environment and education. All reviews may be found at http://www.publichealth.ie/ireland/hiaresources. This resource supplements the ‘Health Impacts of Employment’ report. It highlights a number of organisations whose work considers issues relevant to the relationship between health and employment.

Older People's Preferences for Employment and Retirement Study

The research provides for the first time a national representative quantitative review of the experiences and preferences of older people in relation to employment and retirement. The research allows a wide range of men andwomen, between the ages of 55 and 69 years from a variety of backgrounds and employment status, to offer their perspectives on work and retirement and their preferences for participation and non-participation in the labour force Download the Report here

These papers provide a summary of evidence on the effects of unemployment and poor working conditions on health and the unequal distribution of these effects. They then outlines the potential actions that can be taken in local areas around four specific topics: - Workplace interventions to improve health and well-being- Working with local employers to encourage, incentivise and enforce good quality work- Interventions to increase employment opportunities and retention for people with a long-term health condition or disability- Interventions to increase employment opportunities and retention for older people The full evidence review and four shorter summary briefings are available to download above. Employment and Health Briefing

The Employment and Health briefing is part of the South East Public Heath Group's Information Series of briefings. The Information Series is a set of briefings on a variety of public health topics. Their purpose is to inform partners about public health issues. In particular they can be used to inform the Local Area Agreement process. The series is evolving and comments and suggestions are welcome.
