The Institute of Public Health welcomes the Consultation on a Draft Strategy for Children and Yung People in Northern Ireland. We believe that in addition to the human rights to which we are all entitled, children and young people constitute, in many instances, a vulnerable group within society and therefore special effort is needed to ensure that they are able to maximise their potential and live healthy, fulfilling lives.  In our response to the Consultation Document we will focus on how inequality impacts on children’s lives and how, as a consequence ways in which to combat inequalities need to be at the heart of a strategy for children. We will also highlight the potential for strengthening the strategy by increased cooperation with similar initiatives in the Republic of Ireland.

A total of 454 methadone users successfully completed treatment programmes aimed at weaning them off the heroin substitute last year - but more than 2,000 others left the state's maintenance programme during the same period for a variety of reasons, new figures have revealed. According to statistics released under the Freedom of Information Act, there were 9,760 methadone users around the country last year, with the majority in the Dublin area. However, over 2,778 clients of the methadone maintenance service left the HSE's central treatment lists during the year. A summary of the reasons reveals that in 1,268 instances, they did so after either being released or committed to prison. This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

The 2012/13 influenza season started earlier than in 2011/12; however it lasted longer, with GP consultation rates being elevated for approximately four months. Clinical indices began to increase in late December and peaked in early January, with the only two instances of community syndromic indicators exceeding the baseline threshold occurring in this month. GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2012/13 were higher than those in the 2011/12 season for the majority of the season but remained low overall.Overall no one age-group appeared predominantly affected; however, older adults predominated during the peak period, with rates increasing in children during February. Rates for those aged 65 and over increased late in the season, and this was associated with influenza outbreaks in care homes for the elderly.
