A health promotion strategy: making the healthier choice the easier choice

The Primary Care Steering Group met on the 23rd and 24th September 2003 to discuss the ongoing implementation of the Primary Care Strategy in the context of the Health Service Reform Programme and to make recommendations in this regard to the Secretary General of the Department of Health & Children. At the outset the steering group acknowledges that the reform programme provides significant opportunity for the successful implementation of the primary care strategy. The implementation phase of ten project Primary Care Teams (PCTs) has to-date provided valuable information in relation to current barriers to successful implementation which may now be addressed within the overall reform process. Key themes arising from the discussions formed the basis for the recommendations which are considered by the steering group to be critical elements in achieving successful reform.

Adding Years to Life and Life to Years - A Health Promotion Strategy for Older People in Ireland

This Health Strategy points to the need for promoting healthy ageing in conjunction with the then National Council for Elderly – a goal which was re-iterated in the 1995 Health Promotion Strategy, in which older people were identified as a priority  population group with particular health promotion needs

The National Health Promotion Strategy 2000 - 2005

This strategy will cover the years 2000 to 2005 and is intended as a resource and guide for all relevant stakeholders and interested parties concerned with promoting health in the new millennium. It also fulfils the important commitment to health promotion development set out in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, and addresses Irelandâ?Ts obligations set out in the Mexico Ministerial Statement for the Promotion of Health endorsed by Ministers for Health at the 5th Global conference on Health Promotion held in Mexico in June 2000 Download the Report here

A picture of health: A study of the health status and health promotion needs of homeless people in the west.

Homeless people have been identified as a group that experience inequality in health and a target group in relation to health promotion initiatives. In developing health promotion initiatives it is important to take account of the broader determinants of health and to address the physical, mental and social well-being of homeless people. The study aimed to identify the health status and health promotion needs of homeless people in the Western Health Board region.To gain an understanding of the health problems and health promotion needs of homeless people one to one interviews were carried out with homeless people and focus groups were carried out with service providers. Sixty five interviews were carried out with people currently accessing voluntary services in Galway and Mayo. Three focus groups were carried out with service providers from voluntary and statutory services.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Hospital Staff Perceptions of Health Promotion Activities in Public Hospitals

The aim of this study was to determine the level of staff support for health promotion activities in Queensland public hospitals.

Barriers to health promotion activities in public hospitals

Despite the central role hospitals have in the health care system, relatively few health promotion activities are conducted in Australian public hospitals. This study investigated the types of obstacles that were perceived to inhibit health promotion activities in hospitals. A questionnaire for self-completion was sent to medical superintendents in all public hospitals in Queensland and 112 questionnaires were returned (92.6 per cent response rate). The results indicated that lack of finance, lack of interest by relevant others, and needs (for appropriate programs, training and patient receptivity) were the barriers reported by superintendents. The barriers of 'interest' and 'needs' were related to a lack of written policies in some areas, but not directly to levels of other health promotion activities being conducted in the hospitals. Success in facilitating health promotion programs in hospitals will need to include a change in the environment, in particular the views of medical superintendents. The combination of attitude change and the availability of a motivated person (such as a health promotion officer) to lead the activities may be needed in order to produce an increase in the level of health promotion in public hospitals. IPH response to A Healthier Future: A 20 year vision for health and wellbeing in Northern Ireland

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland aims to promote cooperation for public health between Northern Ireland and Ireland, to tackle inequalities in health and influence public polices in favour of health. In its work, the Institute emphasises a holistic model of health which recognises the interplay of a wide range of health determinants, including economic, social and environmental factors as well as health and social services.
