19.6.2011 I am pleased to present the Report of the Working Group on Congregated Settings, which is the outcome and culmination of a very significant piece of data capture, research and analysis. The Report was initiated by the Primary, Community and Community Care Directorate in 2007 to develop a national plan and associated change programme for moving people from congregated settings to the community in line with Government policy. This series of Good Practice Guides is designed to share important information about health inequalities and some of the evidence-based measures that can be taken to reduce the stark differences in health and wellbeing within populations. The conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age can lead to health inequalities the unfair and avoidable differences in health status. Actions to tackle health inequalities demand the efforts of government, statutory organisations, and community, voluntary and private sectors. This Good Practice Guide to reducing young people's drinking is one of a series designed to capture information about health inequalities and highlight evidence-based interventions and key actions for improvement across sectors.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Dr Van Hout has been invited by the ICASA network and IASP research team [Drs Geurt van de Glind; Trimbos Institute, The Netherlands; Dr Pieter-Jan Carpentier, ICASA; Josep Antoni Ramos-Quiroga, University of Barcelona, Spain, Professor Dr Frances Levin, University of Columbia, New York, USA and Professor Dr. Wim van den Brink, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands] to undertake the research protocol for Ireland as part of this European study of the prevalence of ADHD in adult patients referred for treatment of addiction problems. The research team at Waterford Institute of Technology, School of Health Sciences will undertake this national study as part of the International Collaboration on ADHD and Substance Abuse [ICASA] â?~International ADHD in Substance Use Disorders Prevalence Studyâ?T [IASP study]. The International Collaboration on ADHD and Substance Abuse [ICASA] will provide Dr Van Hout and her team with full support from ICASA of the measurement instruments available and a central database at the University of Amsterdam, and will undergo training for procedures for data capture from Dr van de Glind, Trimbos Institute, The Netherlands. Eight European countries (Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland and Hungary) USA and Australia have already participated in the first phase of the IASP study, which will close in September 2011. Over 2500 Substance Use Disorder [SUD] patients were sampled with approximately 38% scoring positive on the ADHD screener (ASRS). Of these 2500 patients over 1000 patients were evaluated on ADHD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anti-Social Personality and Borderline Personality Disorder. A preliminary estimate of the prevalence of ADHD in SUD treatment seeking patients was recorded at 20 %. The second phase of study [IASP 2011] will commence in September 2011 for countries including Ireland, South Africa, Egypt and Brazil. Dr Van Hout has also been invited to partake in a systematic review paper on the risk factors for development of SUD in children/adolescents with ADHD in collaboration with the ICASA foundation.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

This report presents the findings of an evaluation of how the 12 pathfinder local authorities in the LGA/DH sponsored Shared Priority Project began engaging with new requirements to promote healthier communities and narrow health inequalities. The purpose of the report is to capture the learning from the pathfinder authorities' experience of this initial planning phase and share it more widely now that all local authorities have to focus on the shared priorities.

It was important to us to engage with as many students as possible throughout the process of developing a new name for the reformed junior cycle. In this vein, we used a wide variety of methods to engage with students in order to capture as many ideas as possible; text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, email and consultation sessions. We circulated posters to all schools via post and/or email, and contacted schools in catchment areas for the consultation sessions by phone. In our consultation sessions, we had discussions with the participating students about what the new junior cycle would be, closely guided by the content of “Towards a Framework for Junior Cycle” from the National Council for Curriculum and assessment. In these sessions, students then gave feedback on what they thought of the reformed junior cycle, developed their own ideas, and identified what they thought should be reflected in the name of the reformed junior cycle
