Violence Against Women and Health The problem of Violence Against Women (VAW) continues to plague our society causing appalling damage to the lives of thousands of women and children. The immense negative repercussions of being exposed to physical, sexual, or psychological abuse have been well documented worldwide, and are well accepted by both professionals working in this field and society at large. Significant government funding has been directed to this area in order to provide support to women who experience abuse. However, rates of violence remain unacceptably high and services are still inadequate given the magnitude and the complexity of the problem. Click here to download PDF 478kb

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting - A Literature Review

This report represents the result of two different strands of work by the Women's Health Council. At the beginning of 2006, due to the recent significant inward migration experienced in Ireland, the Council's board identified the promotion of the health of ethnic minority women as a key area of work in its strategic plan for the period 2007-2009. At the same time, it was also decided that the problem of gender-based violence would also be addressed through a number of research and policy initiatives. This report focuses on a health issuethat marries these two concerns, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C – see below for definition) and serves as an accompanying document to the recently published Violence Against Women and Health (2007) and the forthcoming study on Ethnic Minority Women and Gender-Based Violence. Newry Women's Aid

Women's Aid responds to urgent need to provide vital support and accommodation to women and children experiencing domestic violence. This is their first BCPP project. It will provide a range of social and health information sessions to women, staff, volunteers and children while supporting the pharmacist to better understand the issues they are facing, developing a referral process and confidential service.

Being a man or a woman has a significant impact on health, as a result of both biological and gender-related differences. The health of women and girls is of particular concern because, in many societies, they are disadvantaged by discrimination rooted in sociocultural factors. For example, women and girls face increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Some of the sociocultural factors that prevent women and girls to benefit from quality health services and attaining the best possible level of health include: * unequal power relationships between men and women; * social norms that decrease education and paid employment opportunities; * an exclusive focus on women’s reproductive roles; and * potential or actual experience of physical, sexual and emotional violence. While poverty is an important barrier to positive health outcomes for both men and women, poverty tends to yield a higher burden on women and girls’ health due to, for example, feeding practices (malnutrition) and use of unsafe cooking fuels (COPD).This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.
