IPH response to EU Commission consultation on EU role in global health

The European Commission launced a public consultation iin October 2009 on stakeholder views regarding the rationale, scope and strategic objectives for an EU role in global health. The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) aims to improve health on the island of Ireland by working to combat health inequalities and influence public policies in favour of health.  The Institute promotes cooperation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in public health research, training and policy advice. IPH also contributes to a number of European networks and projects and is a member of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI). IPH welcomes the opportunity to respond to the European Commission consultation on the role of the EU in global health.

The Role and Future Development of Day Services in Ireland Government and health board policy documents have acknowledged the valuable role that day services play in providing services such as a midday meal, bath or shower, therapeutic and social services, and in promoting social contact and preventing loneliness, relieving caring relatives and providing social stimulation in a safe environment for older people with mild dementia (The Years Ahead, 1988). This is a publication of The National Council on Ageing and Older People The Conference took place on October 3, 2005 . It attracted almost 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors, and from every county. The Conference provided the opportunity for delegates to focus on the issue of social inclusion of older people at local level and the challenges it presents. The Role and Future Development of the Meals-on-Wheels Service for Older People in Ireland

This report provides, for the first time, a snapshot of the meals-on-wheels service in Ireland and gives a unique insight into client and provider perceptions of the service. The research findings underline the dual importance of the service for clients, who noted that it is a vital source of both nutritious meals and social contact and connectivity to the wider community. From a supply side perspective, the research findings point to the wide organisational diversity that exists within the service and the critical role that volunteers play, as well as highlighting difficulties that many services currently experience.
