EU report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On 5 June 2014, the European Union published its first report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). This document follows the ratification of the Convention by the EU in 2010 and its obligation to prepare and submit a report on its actions to support the implementation of the Convention. Factsheet on case-law on the rights of older people

The Press Service of the European Court of Human Rights published in June 2014 a factsheet on the Court’s case-law on the human rights of older people. This collection shows that even though the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) does not explicitly refer to older persons nor to age discrimination, the Strasbourg Court can play an important role as a guardian of the rights of older people. Physical and Sensory Disability Strategy and Action Plan 2011-2015 - Summary of the feedback and findings from the public consultation (PDF 248KB)

On 27 January 2011 the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) launched a three month public consultation for a new draft Physical and Sensory Disability Strategy and Action Plan (2011-2015). åÊ The aim of the consultation was to provide the opportunity for a range of different stakeholders (public authorities and organisations, individuals including persons with disabilities and community and voluntary organisations) from across Northern Ireland to give feedback on the suggested priorities and challenges detailed in the document. The Department recognised the need for a new Disability Strategy and Action Plan not least to address new and developing challenges and opportunities. These include: åÊ • Obligations taken by the UK and NI in signing and ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; åÊ • New innovations and models of care, support and treatment available within health and social care; åÊ • The current demographic trends and financial constraints being faced by everyone. åÊ åÊ åÊ

Report of the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme Review Group

The Irish service was last reviewed in 1980.  Much of the valuable recommendations made at that time have been given effect.  The present Review Group examined that report and, to the extend that recommendations then made have not been acted upon, incorporated them in this report. The views and rights of mothers were of course paramount in the consideration of the members of the Group and issues of choice, privacy, consent and information were considered and appropriate recommendations made. Interim Report of the Steering Group on the Review of the Mental Health Act 2001 There is a commitment in the Programme for Government to review the Mental Health Act 2001. In line with this, Minister Lynch appointed a Steering Group to review the Mental Health Act 2001. Their report is now with an Expert Group. The review takes accounts of the significant changes in thinking about the delivery of mental health services that have taken place in the last ten years (including the introduction of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD), the shift to community based services, the adoption of a recovery approach in every aspect of service delivery and the involvement of service users as partners in their own care and in the development of the service).
