Oral Health of Irish Adults 2000 Р2002 Publication of the strategy document - Shaping a Healthier Future̢?T1 marked a major milestone in the development of the health care delivery system in Ireland. The strategy was underpinned by three key principles: equity, quality of service and accountability. Supporting the health of the over 50s

To address diet and lifestyle issues and improve the health of the over 50s in Gilford. Outcome: Health related issues for example heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes were raised and members became more aware of their health, lifestyle and specifically diet through individual consultations with pharmacist and nutritionist and through group sessions. The pharmacist has worked well with the GP and is broadening links with other support agencies eg CAB. The GP / Pharmacist relationship has strengthened.

The mental health of young people in Ireland:a report of the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research across the Lifespan (PERL) Group Dublin.

There has been a dearth of epidemiological research on rates of mental disorder among Irish people and little is known about the numbers of young people in Ireland who are experiencing diagnosable mental disorders. In the context of such limited epidemiological research in the field of mental health, the PERL Group in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has conducted two studies on mental disorders and psychopathology among young Irish people. This report is the first research report from these two studies by the PERL Group. It provides data on the prevalence rates of mental disorder, substance use, deliberate self-harm and suicidality among young Irish people aged 11-24 years.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

National Audit of the Organisation of Services for Falls and Bone Health of Older People

This report presents the results of the second national audit which examines the organisation of services provided to older people for falls prevention and bone health. Falls and fractures are a common and serious problem affecting older people, with high levels of personal and financial cost. National guidelines, supported by the research evidence, require the provision of integrated services for falls and fracture prevention and treatment. Effective commissioning is needed to produce such high quality services.��This audit was commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) as part of the second cycle of audits on services for the prevention of falls and fractures in older people. It follows the first organisational audit, performed in 2005, and the clinical audit of 2007. All were audited against specific standards from the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) and guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Since the first audit, indicators have been added or updated in line with new guidance including that on falls prevention of inpatients following the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) report on slips, trips and falls in hospital (2007). For the first time, the audit also looks specifically at falls and fracture prevention in mental healthcare and a sample of care homes.

Mental health of children and young people in Great Britain, 2004

This report first describes the prevalence of mental disorders among 5- to 16-year olds in 2004 and notes any changes since the previous survey in 1999. It then provides profiles of children in each of the main disorder categories (emotional, conduct, hyperkinetic and autistic spectrum disorders) and , where the sample size permits, profiles subgroups within these categories.

Mental Disorders in Older Irish People: Incidence, Prevalence and Treatment

The National Council for the Elderly is an advisory body to the Minister for Health on all aspects of ageing and the welfare of the elderly. One of its terms of reference is to advise the Minister on measures to promote the health of the elderly. As one of its contributions towards the realisation of this objective the Council published a report in October 1996 entitled, Mental Disorders in Older Irish People: Incidence Prevalence and Treatment. The report provides a profile of mental disorders in the older Irish population by bringing together in one publication the information which exists on the prevalence, incidence and treatment of mental disorders in older people. It will be a valuable source of information for planning and developing mental health services for older people. Download the Report here

Improving the health and wellbeing of the elderly is the theme of the fourth Director of Public Health annual report, launched on 12 June 2013. Northern Ireland's elderly population is growing and older people are living longer than ever before, which emphasises the importance of providing health and social care that allows them to live a productive life.This report highlights the many areas of public health work aimed at giving elderly people in Northern Ireland the best opportunity to live active and healthy lives in a safe and secure environment. Briefing Paper on Health Inequalities for Elected Members of Local Government (ROI)

The social and economic circumstances in which people live strongly influence their chances to be healthy.  Factors such as housing, transport, environment, education and employment are just some of the functions of local government that influence health. IPH, in partnership with CAN and Nexus developed a briefing paper to support elected members of local government to ensure that the decision in which they are involved have a positive impact on health, especially the health of vulnerable groups.  It provides councillors with information to assist in contributing to a better quality of life for constituents with healthier decision making in areas such as safer environments, increased education opportunities, better housing stock and improved public transport availability.

IPH response to Your Health is Your Wealth – Health and Wellbeing Framework 2012- 2020 (Department of Health)

The remit of the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) is to promote cooperation for public health between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the areas of research and information, capacity building and policy advice. Our approach is to support Departments of Health and their agencies in both jurisdictions, and maximise the benefits of all-island cooperation to achieve practical benefits for people in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Department of Health is developing a Health and Wellbeing policy to improve the health of the population and reduce health inequalities by addressing causes of preventable illnesses. The Policy Framework is at an advanced stage with a number of background analytical documents prepared and published on the Department website to allow views to be incorporated into final drafts.  IPH responded to the consultation call in 2011 and we welcome the placement of these supporting documents on the Department website with the request for additional comments.

North South Survey of Children’s Oral Health 2002 This report presents the results of the first contemporaneous North South study of the oral health of children and adolescents on the island of Ireland. The last National Survey of Childrenâ?Ts Oral Health in the Republic of Ireland was carried out in 1984. The present study describes the oral health experience of children and adolescents in Ireland today. The results are of interest to the public, to policymakers and to service providers and will be of assistance in the evaluation of current oral health services and the planning of services for the next decade. Home Help Services for Elderly People in Ireland - Conference Proceedings

The National Council for the Elderly was established in 1981 as the National Council for the Aged. The terms of reference of the Council are: To advise the Minister for Health on all aspects of ageing and the welfare of the elderly either on its own initiative or at the request of the Minister It is long established national policy to maintain the elderly in their own homes for as long as possible. The Years Ahead report of 1988 made specific recommendations as to how care in the community for the frail elderly could be organised. The recent strategy document from the Department of Health, Shaping a Healthier Future, has presented a target, that not less than 90 per cent of those over 75 years of age should live at home Download the Report here

North South Survey of Children's Oral Health in Ireland 2002

The health strategy in Ireland has placed great emphasis on the collection of quality information on health and its determinants, for health policy planning and evaluation. This North South survey of children's oral health provides extensive data for representative samples totaling 19,963 children and adolescents on a variety of oral diseases, conditions and related parameters.
