Longstanding health conditions among three-year-old children in the Republic of Ireland in 2011

IPH has now applied the methodology to longstanding health conditions among young children across the island of Ireland. This report, based on a systematic analysis of data from the Growing Up in Ireland National Longitudinal Study of Children in the Republic of Ireland, is the first comprehensive look at longstanding health conditions among young children in Ireland. Estimated prevalence (per cent and number of cases) of longstanding health conditions among three-year-olds in the Republic of Ireland in 2011 by administrative counties/cities. The conditions are carer-reported: - "Longstanding illness, condition or disability” (where longstanding was defined as “anything that has troubled him/her over a period of time or that is likely to affect him/her over a period of time”) - Diagnosed asthma or asthma symptoms - Diagnosed eczema/any kind of skin allergy - Sight problem that required correction - Hearing problem that required correction - The estimates are based on data from the Growing Up in Ireland National Longitudinal Study of Children (www.growingup.ie) and population data. Developing the Strategy

Looked after children in Dublin and their mental health needs.

Children in care in Ireland have increased by 27% in the last decade. This population is recognized to be among the most vulnerable. This study aims to describe their placement histories, service use and mental health needs. Data was obtained on 174 children (56.5% of eligible sample) with a mean age of 10.83 (SD = 5.04). 114 (65.5%) were in care for three years or more. 29 (16.7%) did not have a SW and 49 (37.7%) had no GP. 50 (28.7%) were attending CAMHS. Long term care, frequent placement changes and residential setting were significantly related with poorer outcomes and increased MH contact. Given the increase in numbers in care and the overall decrease in resource allocation to health and social care, individual care planning and prioritizing of resources are essential.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Prevalence of injuries among three-year-old children in the Republic of Ireland in 2011

The Institute of Public health in Ireland (IPH) produces population prevalence estimates and forecasts for a number of chronic conditions among adults. IPH has now applied the methodology to examine health conditions and injuries among young children across the island of Ireland.This short report is a supplement to a previous IPH report that examines health conditions among three-year-olds in the Republic of Ireland. It provides estimates of the prevalence of injuries that required hospital admission or treatment among three-year-olds in the Republic of Ireland in 2011. The analysis identifies risk factors associated with child injuries and provides estimates of the prevalence of these conditions for each of the 34 administrative cities and counties.

Carer-reported health conditions among seven-year-old children in Northern Ireland in 2011: A report based on data from the Millennium Cohort Study

The Institute of Public health in Ireland (IPH) produces population prevalence estimates and forecasts for a number of chronic conditions among adults. IPH has now applied the methodology to examine health conditions among young children across the island of Ireland.This report uses information collected from parents in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) along with population data collected in the 2011 Northern Ireland Census to estimate the prevalence of any longstanding condition, asthma, eczema, sight problems and hearing problems among seven-year-olds in Northern Ireland in 2011. The analysis identifies risk factors associated with each condition and provides estimates of the prevalence of these conditions for each of the 11 Local Government Districts.A report on health conditions among three-year-olds in the Republic of Ireland has previously been published by the IPH.See the Chronic Conditions Hub for more details.

Mental health of children and young people in Great Britain, 2004

This report first describes the prevalence of mental disorders among 5- to 16-year olds in 2004 and notes any changes since the previous survey in 1999. It then provides profiles of children in each of the main disorder categories (emotional, conduct, hyperkinetic and autistic spectrum disorders) and , where the sample size permits, profiles subgroups within these categories.

A palliative care needs assessment for children

The development of a children’s hospice is not seen as a priority by the respondents in this study, some of whom raised concerns regarding accessibility and cost. There is a degree of ambiguity however, regarding the role of ‘hospice’ in paediatric palliative care with some respondents associating it only with end-of-life care. There is a substantial need for ongoing education, training and development of healthcare professionals caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Palliative care services currently provided to children in Ireland with life-limiting conditions are seen to be inequitable, differing significantly according to diagnosis (malignant versus nonmalignant) and according to geographic location. This poses challenges, particularly for parents of children with non-malignant diseases. Both families and professionals often deem the physical environment for adolescents in hospitals unsuitable. The difficulties encountered in the transition from children’s services to adult services have been identified as an issue for adolescents. The provision of bereavement support varies between services. Professionals have identified the need for a broader range of bereavement services.

Research Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland The Report of the Commission on Nursing (1998, para. 6.77) recommended that the Nursing Policy Division in the Department of Health and Children, in consultation with the appropriate bodies, draw up a national strategy for nursing and midwifery research. In response to the above, the Chief Nursing Officer at the Department of Health and Children convened a consultative committee to prepare a research strategy for nursing and midwifery in Ireland. This Value for Money and Policy Review (VFM&PR) of the Economic Cost and Charges Associated with Private and Semi-Private Treatment Services in Public Hospitals was initiated by the Department of Health and Children in June 2009 and was conducted under the auspices of the Governmentâ?Ts Value for Money & Policy Review Initiative 2009-2011. The Review was overseen by an independently chaired National Steering Group comprised of senior representatives from the Department of Health and Children, the Department of Finance, and the Health Service Executive (HSE).
