Institute Responds to DSD Consultation on Cathedral Quarter Masterplans

The Institute of Public Health welcomes the opportunity to respond to the following consultations on the regeneration of Belfast City Centre; A. Draft North East Quarter Masterplan Key Regeneration Principles and Concept Plan – February 2005B. Draft North West Quarter Masterplan Key Regeneration Principles and Concept Plan – February 2005 The Institute of Public Health is a cross border organisation funded by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland and the Department of Health and Children in the Republic of Ireland (www.publichealth.ie). It aims to improve health and tackle inequalities in health across the island of Ireland. The Institute believes that one of the most effective ways of addressing inequalities in health across the island is to ensure that all Government Departments recognise the wider determinants which influence health and maximise opportunities within their policies to improve the health of the population.

Towards a Standardised Framework for Inter-Country Adoption - Assessment Procedures

In the first part the background on inter-country adoption and assessment of prospective adopters are considered in general terms in Chapters Two and Three respectively. The second chapter places the objectives of the research into context. Due to the declining numbers of children being put forward for domestic adoption, there is increasing recourse to inter-country adoption. An overview of the situation is outlined. The legislation section outlines both Irish legislation and the pivotal international agreement relevant to inter-country adoption, namely the Hague Convention. The purpose of Health in Ireland, Key Trends 2011, as with previous editions, is to provide summary data on the main areas of health and health care over the past decade. It also aims to highlight selected trends and topics of growing concern and to include new data where it becomes available. A further objective is to assess ourselves and our progress in the broader EU context. It also highlights selected trends and topics of growing concern and includes new data which has become available during the course of the year. An important objective is to assess ourselves and our progress in the broader EU context. The booklet is divided into six chapters ranging across population, life expectancy and health status through to health care delivery, staffing and costs. Overall, the picture which emerges is of continuing progress, but at a reduced rate, set in a context of very ignificant financial constraints. Attracting, Developing and Training Effective Teachers - OECD Country Background Report for Ireland

This Country Background Report (CBR) on the teaching career in Ireland forms part of the major OECD study “Attracting, Developing and Retaining Effective Teachers.” Similar reports are being submitted from twenty six other countries. Nine of these countries are also engaged on ‘thematic’ studies of the teaching career, involving site visits by external reviewers appointed by the OECD. The format of the CBRs follows a common pattern, set out by the OECD in its Design and Implementation Plan. This is to facilitate comparative analysis of sub-themes of the reports. Thus, each CBR involves six chapters. The first two – “the national context” and “school system and the teaching force”– are intended to provide succinct overviews of these themes in line with queries posed in the OECD documentation. Each of the other four chapters is designed on a common format – identification of policy concerns; data, trends and factors; policy initiatives and their impact. Specific questions are posed regarding data, trends and factors. The same questions may be posed in relation to more than one sub-theme which gives rise to some repetition in the report, but is important for the comparative analysis.
