Report of the Independent Body on Pharmacy Contract Pricing On 18 February 2008 the Minister for Health and Children announced the appointment of an Independent Body to recommend a new, interim community pharmacy dispensing fee for the General Medical Service (GMS), Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) and other community drug schemes.The Terms of Reference for the Independent Body on Pharmacy Contract Pricing are as follows: â?oTo advise the Minister for Health and Children on the appropriate level of dispensing fee to be paid to community pharmacists for existing services provided under the GMS and community drug schemes having regard to: Click here to download PDF: 110kb

Orchard Pharmacy

Engaging the community through a health column in the local press under the direction of the Southern HSSB. Outcome: This ongoing project is working towards promoting health care in the wider community and enabling the general public to better understand the range of services offered by community pharmacy. The health column is publicised in the local press across the SHSSB area and has worked to increase people's awareness of health and has focused on local needs and information, linking in with national and local health promoting campaigns

Managing health and increasing well-being

The Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership has worked to improve local health outcomes by encouraging members of the community to develop skills relating to managing their own health, and providing accessible information on the availability of services of which they can avail of. The aim is to facilitate local people to gain knowledge on various health issues through books, videos, leaflets and enable the most vulnerable and in need to access additional support through the pharmacy to complementary therapy. Outcome: A room in the pharmacy has been renovated and offers access to other support services. Funding has allowed the pharmacist to equip the room with videos, leaflets, books etc. There has been an increase in partnership working between the community group, pharmacist and more contact has been made with primary care. Further funding has allowed for the development of a subsidised support referral service for counselling and complementary therapies. As well as this, the pharmacist has worked with local groups to provide information sessions on lifestyle and on health issues identified by the local groups

Cloona Oasis Centre - Davette Martin

The organisation helps those with mental ill health and those suffering addiction. This is their second community-pharmacy project. The first focussed on men and this project will move on to work with women. Women who have been referred to Cloona Oasis have been through hardship. The Pharmacist will work with them to develop their confidence, explain their medication and break down barriers so that they can access other services.

Colin Community Area Pharmacy Partnership

This project has worked towards promoting positive mental health by integrating pharmacy services with other local support structures already in existence to support those experiencing mental health issues.

Community Health Shop

To create a Community Health Shop which would be open to all in the community, providing health information sessions, health checks in both the pharmacy and community setting and linking in with the existing lay health worker scheme. â€_

Windsor Pharmacy - Valerie Addy

To date this project has underwent phase 1 and is undergoing the implementation of phase 2. The first phase aimed to make students aware of issues surrounding STIs and their health implications. In phase two, the project aims at determining the most appropriate means of disseminating information about sexually transmitted diseases.

Belcoo Pharmacy

To promote the health and well-being amongst families in the rural and isolated community of Belcoo by focusing on the children, their health and the positive message they can bring to their families.

Larne Community Development Project

This partnership has been funded a couple of times to mainly looking at supporting women to look at health issues in the area. This project has, to date, worked well in making community development and health real. It has helped establish a women's group in the area and has enabled women to bring back relevant information to their families, friends, communities and other local groups they have been involved in. The pharmacy and pharmacist have been a key catalyst for this making use of skills, knowledge, contacts and premises. Some initial work was also carried out with men in the area, encouraging them to consider their health. This Level 3 project now goes a step further; skilling the women, as facilitators, to enable them to role out the information they have gained in a more formal way to the Larne area and its surrounding rural area. It also allows space and time for those women, not at this stage, to gain information, skills and confidence to take back to their families and friends. It also seeks to develop an approach targeting towards encouraging men to think about their health.

Frank McCaughan's Pharmacy - James McCaughan

McCaughan's pharmacy in this project will work with Rural Support to address the needs of farmers, identify causes of stress, improve their ability to manage stress and increase their access to services available to them. Infomation events will be held at the local mart and the pharmacist will be on hand to offer 1-1 support and signposting. An aspect of this project is to train up mart staff so to make it sustainable on a longer term basis.
