Tackling health inequalities: 2004-06 data and policy update for the 2010 national target

Ethnic disparities in health and health care: a focused review of the evidence and selected examples of good practice. Full report

This report arises from a project commissioned by the Department of Health's Equality and Human Rights Group to produce an evidence-based review with a national perspective that addresses (i) ethnic differentials in health and healthcare and (ii) evidence of effective NHS and other action, including seective examples of good practice to illustrate each area. Rather than aiming for comprehensive coverage, the Department suggested a document that focuses on selective topics and population health priorities drawn from the NHS plan, existing and developing National Service Frameworks, and other policy documents and which, collectively, are encompassed in the NHS's 10-point Race Equality Action Plan. The authors were not asked to review the evidence on other key areas (such ashypertension, stroke, disability, etc.), ethnic disparities in the wider determinants of health, and on some specific groups such as Gypsy Travellers and refugees and asylum seekers. Analysis of the National Childhood Obesity Database 2005-06

This report looks at the first year of data collection on childhood obesity and the difficulties of this project. This report summarises the data available and provides high level analysis of the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the children measured in 2005-06. The report was produced for the Department of Health by the South East Public Health Observatory on behalf of the Association of Public Health Observatories, and published in December 2006.

National Child Measurement Programme. Detailed Analysis of the 2006/07 Dataset

The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) weighs and measures children in Reception (typically aged 4 - 5 years) and (aged 10 - years) annually. The report highlights the usefulness of the NCMP Dataset in furthering our understanding of underweight, overweight and obesity in children, as well as highlighting some areas where improvements can be made in the programme, or where further analysis and investigation is required. The purpose of this report is not to provide specific local results, but an understanding from national-level analysis that can be used to inform local uses and analysis of NCMP data.

Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (MINAP)

The Myocardial Infarction Audit Project (MINAP) began in late 1998 when a broadly based steering group developed a dataset for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This allowed clinicians to examine the management of myocardial infarction within their hospitals against targets specified by the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease (NSF). The audit project produces annual reports "How the NHS manages heart attacks" to show the performance of hospitals, ambulance services and cardiac networks in England and Wales against national standards and targets for the care of heart attack patients. MINAP has recently changed its name from the Myocardial Infarction National Audit Project to the Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project to reflect the importance of all acute coronary syndromes.

Development of a National English Language Policy and Framework for Legally Resident Adult Immigrants - Horwath Report

The Office of the Minister for Integration (OMI), in conjunction with the Department of Education and Science (DES), commissioned an independent review to assist in the development of a national English Language policy and framework for legally-resident adult immigrants. Horwath Consulting Ireland, in association with Rambll Management and Matrix Knowledge Group, were awarded the contract to undertake this assignment. The terms of reference for the assignment state that: “proposed future developments will be governed by a clear strategy which reflects the importance of English language tuition in overall integration objectives and which addresses key coordination, technical, funding and service-delivery issues."
