Unhealthy Consequences: Energy Costs and Child Health

Substantial and compelling medical and public health evidence indicated that non-medical factors, such as home energy costs, profoundly influence child health and well-being. Child Health Impact Assessment offered an evidence- and experience-based method through which to evaluate the implications of policy, regulations, and legislation for children's health and well-being. Our Child Health Impact Assessment of home energy costs revealed that unaffordable home energy has important and preventable adverse consequences for children's health. The available evidence showed that unaffordable home energy has preventable, potential consequences on the health and well-being of the more than 400,000 Massachusetts children living in low-income households. Low-income families are caught in the gap between rising energy prices and available energy assistance. Energy assistance falls far short of the need, especially when there is a spike in energy prices, such as following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In addition to the exceedingly high housing costs in Massachusetts, our climate means low-income families spend more of their income on home energy (energy burden) to keep warm than families in other regions of the U.S.

Measuring impact: Improving the health and wellbeing of people in mid-life and beyond

Measuring impact is the third in a series of publications commissioned by the Health Development Agency from the mid-life programme of work, which seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the mid-life age group and reduce inequalities. The publications Making the case (HDA, 2003) and Taking action (HDA, 2004), and now Measuring impact, aim to support practitioners and policy makers at a local level in implementing and using the evidence of what works to develop mainstream practice and influence policy formulation in this population group.

Tackling health inequalities: Ten years on

This report reviews developments in health inequalities over the last 10 years across government - from the publication of the Acheson report on health inequalities in November 1998 to the announcement of the post-2010 strategic review of health inequalities in November 2008. It covers developments across government on the wider social determinants of health, and the role of the NHS. It provides an assessment of developments against the Acheson report, reviews a range of key data sets covering social, economic, health and environmental indicators, and considers lessons learned and challenges for the future.

Employment and Health Briefing

The Employment and Health briefing is part of the South East Public Heath Group's Information Series of briefings. The Information Series is a set of briefings on a variety of public health topics. Their purpose is to inform partners about public health issues. In particular they can be used to inform the Local Area Agreement process. The series is evolving and comments and suggestions are welcome.

Developing a South East strategy for health

A strategy is being developed across the South East based on five major themes - inequalities, older adults, children, workforce, and sustainable communities. This presentation looks at the steps being taken to develop this strategy and gives more detail on the expected outcomes.

Learning Disabilities and Health

This factsheet on learning disability has been compiled by the Department of Health South East. It highlights the health inequalities experienced by those with learning disabilities and summarises the main health-related issues. It details key publications such as 'Valuing People Now', which was launched in Jan-09, and provides information about strategies, resources and national drivers including Local Area Agreements. It can serve as a useful tool for PCTs, commissioners, those involved in service development, and those with a public health remit in order to improve practice and health outcomes among those with learning disability at both local and regional levels. This collection contains a number of factsheets which have been produced by the Department of Health South East (the Department's presence in the region based in the Government Office for the South East) to promote understanding and awareness of key public health issues affecting the health of the population of the region. The factsheets are not policy documents, but are intended to promote good practice among the wider public health workforce in the NHS, Local Authorities and the voluntary and community sector.
