Standards for the Assessment of Need process under Part 2 of the Disability Act 2005 In 2004, the Irish Government launched the National Disability Strategy as a framework of positive action measures to support the participation of people with disabilities in Irish society. Two new pieces of legislation â?" the Education for Persons with Special Education Needs Act, 2004 (EPSEN Act 2004 hereafter) and the Disability Act, 2005 â?" form an integral part of this strategy and deal with the special education and/or health needs of persons. End-of-Life Care for Older People in Acute and Long-Stay Care Settings in Ireland

The National Council on Ageing and Older People (NCAOP) and the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) are pleased to present this report, End-of-Life Care for Older People in Acute and Long-Stay Care Settings in Ireland. The report details the results of research that focuses, for the first time in Ireland, on the quality oflife and quality of care at the end-of-life for older people in various care settings including acute hospitals, public extended care units, private nursing homes, voluntary nursing homes and welfare homes. The report provides a new model for care at the end-of-life which goes beyond specialist palliative care provision to embrace a compassionate approach that supports older people who are living with, or dying from, progressive, chronic and life-threatening conditions, and attends to all their needs: physical, psychological,social and spiritual. Building a Culture of Patient Safety - Report of the Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance

The Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance was established in January 2007 and reported to the Minister in July 2008. The report was considered by government in January 2009 which agreed the implementation process. The overall objective of the Commission was to develop clear and practical recommendations to ensure that safety and quality of care for patients is paramount within the healthcare system. The Commission’s report set out a wide range of policy measures that will drive the safety and quality agenda in Irish healthcare in the coming years. The establishment of the Commission was prompted by an increasing awareness of patient safety issues in general and high profile health service system failures at home and abroad and in particular by the Lourdes Hospital Inquiry. All Ireland Traveller Health Study: Our Geels - The Birth Cohort Study Follow Up

The birth cohort study was a one year follow-up of all Traveller babies born on the island of Ireland between 14th October 2008 and 13th October 2009. The mother had to self-identify as an Irish Traveller. The aim of study was to assess the health status of Traveller infants and their mothers, quantify health service use, conditions needing health services and to examine why Traveller infants die. Health system responses to financial pressures in Ireland: policy options in an international context

Given the scale of the challenge facing the health system for 2013 and subsequent years, the Department of Health invited the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies to prepare a report on the implications for the Irish health system of our current financial pressures. The Observatory is an international partnership hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The partnership includes three other international agencies (European Commission, the European Investment Bank, World Bank), several national and decentralized governments, including Ireland, and academic institutions. As an independent and neutral knowledge broker the Observatory's core mission is to inform policy-making and decision-making processes by providing tailored, timely and reliable evidence on health policy and health systems. The Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) is the umbrella organisation for drinks industry manufacturers and suppliers. ABFI works to promote and support an environment that encourages the sustainable and responsible development of the alcohol beverage manufacturing sector in Ireland. The Irish drinks industry is a major national industry providing over 60,000 direct and indirect jobs, generating approximately â,¬2 billion in excise and VAT revenues for the State, and supporting some of Irelandâ?Ts most successful international export products. It has major public health implications and it is responsible for a considerable burden of health and social harm at individual, family and societal levels. It is clear to the IMG that the implementation of A Vision for Change (AVFC) to date including 2011 has been slow and inconsistent. There is a continued absence of a National Mental Health Service Directorate with authority and control of resources. Such a body has the potential to give strong corporate leadership and act as a catalyst for change. Review of Undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery Degree Programmes - Consultation Report

The Department of Health has commenced a review of the undergraduate nursing and midwifery degree programmes in order to establish their efficiency and effectiveness in preparing nurses and midwives to practice in the Irish healthcare system now and into the future (referred to as the Review throughout this report).
