Corporate governance is the system by which organisations direct and control their functions and relate to their stakeholders in order to manage their business, achieve their mission and objectives and meet the necessary standards of accountability, integrity and propriety. It is a key element in improving efficiency and accountability as well as enhancing openness and transparency. A significant element of the Governmentâ?Ts programme for health service reform is the strengthening of governance and accountability arrangements across the health system. Code of Practice on Fluoridation of Drinking Water 2007 Fluoridation of drinking water, the main aim of which is the prevention and control of dental caries (dental decay), commenced in Ireland in 1964 after the introduction of the Health (Fluoridation of Water Supplies) Act 1960. The Act provides that health authorities shall arrange for the fluoridation of public piped water supplies. The Act also provides that sanitary (local) authorities may act as the agents of health authorities in fluoridating public piped water supplies. Report of the Working Group on Rehabilitation (2007) The Working Group on Drugs Rehabilitation arose from a recommendation in the Mid-Term Review of the National Drugs Strategy, which was published in June 2005. Extensive public consultations were conducted as part of the Mid-Term Review. Although it found that the current aims and objectives of the Drugs Strategy are fundamentally sound, the Review highlighted the need to re-focus priorities and accelerate the rollout of some of the Strategyâ?Ts actions and a number of new actions and amendments were included. Women, Debt & Health; a Joint report of The Women’s Health Council and MABS The main aims of the â?~Women, Debt and Healthâ?T project were to:- explore whether women attending the MABS service commonly discuss health during their money advice and budgeting consultations;- investigate whether women attending MABS identifi ed links between their debt or financial difficulties and their health; and- document the types of health issues experienced by MABS clients.- A secondary aim of the research was to explore the need for, and nature of, further research in this area. 24.6.2008 National Office of Suicide Prevention Annual Report 2007 Suicidal behaviour remains a significant public health problem in Ireland. Nearly 11,000 self harm presentations were made to our Emergency Departments in 2007. The latest year of occurrence data for 2005 shows the number of recorded suicides at 481, slightly lower than previous years. As our population has increased our overall rate of suicide has reduced, although our rate of youth suicide remains the 5th highest in Europe. However, we should be encouraged by the self harm and year of occurrence suicide data which although not yet indicating significant downward trends are perhaps beginning to reflect the impact of the work undertaken in the last few years. SLÃÂÅN 2007: Dietary Habits of the Irish Population The third national Survey of Lifestyle, Attitudes and Nutrition (SLÃÂÅN) was conducted in 2007, following previous surveys in 1998 and 2002. The 2007 SLÃÂÅN survey involved a nationally representative sample of 10,364 respondents (62% response rate), of whom 9,223 (89%) completed a standard Willett Food Frequency Questionnaire adapted for use in the Irish population. Second Report of the Alcohol Marketing Communications Monitoring Body (2007)

In December 2005, the Minister for Health and Children set up the Alcohol Marketing Communications Monitoring Body (the Monitoring Body) to oversee the implementation of and adherence to the Voluntary Codes of Practice to limit the exposure of young people to alcohol advertising.
