Acute Hospital Bed Capacity - A National Review

The Programme for Prosperity and Fairness outlined the commitment of the Government to a review of hospital bed capacity in both acute and non-acute settings, to be carried out by the Department of Health and Children in conjunction with the Department of Finance and in consultation with the Social Partners. The focus of this report is on bed capacity in publicly-funded acute hospitals in Ireland. The capacity needs of the sub-acute sector have been assessed separately in the context of the Health Strategy, Quality and Fairness: A Health System for You. Download document here

Mental Disorders in Older Irish People: Incidence, Prevalence and Treatment

The National Council for the Elderly is an advisory body to the Minister for Health on all aspects of ageing and the welfare of the elderly. One of its terms of reference is to advise the Minister on measures to promote the health of the elderly. As one of its contributions towards the realisation of this objective the Council published a report in October 1996 entitled, Mental Disorders in Older Irish People: Incidence Prevalence and Treatment. The report provides a profile of mental disorders in the older Irish population by bringing together in one publication the information which exists on the prevalence, incidence and treatment of mental disorders in older people. It will be a valuable source of information for planning and developing mental health services for older people. Download the Report here  

Report of the Inspector of Mental Hospitals 1999

The report details some general matters affecting the psychiatric services at the time of inspection and highlights the main developments envisaged in the psychiatric services in each health board. The report then proceeds to deal with each individual service. Each health board is allocated a separate chapter, with a chapter also being devoted to registered psychiatric hospitals. Part 9 of the Health Act 2004 makes provision for the introduction of a statutory complaints system within the HSE. The purpose of this Department of Health and Children Consultation is to establish a shared understanding of the requirements and priorities attaching to this particular part of the Act as well as providing an opportunity for those experienced in complaints handling to contribute to and inform the Regulations which will specify how the HSE will establish a statutory framework for dealing with complaints received under Part 9 of the Health Act, 2004.
