A management development strategy for the health and personal social services in Ireland

The integration of personal and organisational objectives is a notoriously difficult task but a systematic approach to training and development provides a powerful source of integration. A model illustrating how management development can occupy the 'middle ground' where organisational and individual development overlap is included in this report. Management development must be just one part of a continum, starting with workforce planning and recruitment and selection, and leading to training and development, succession planning and career development.

Benzodiazepines: Good Practice Guidelines for Clinicians

Benzodiazepines are one of the most widely used prescription medicinal products in the world. Benzodiazepines may be prescribed safely in the short-term and are a highly effective treatment for anxiety, insomnia and some forms of epilepsy and spasticity. Benzodiazepines are only indicated when the disorder is severe, disabling or subjecting the individual to extreme distress. Dependence is now recognised as a significant risk in patients receiving treatment for longer than one month and the practitioner has to be conscious of this when evaluating the relative benefits and risks of continued prescription. This revised report on immunisation guidelines for Ireland has been prepared with the assistance of an active committee from associated disciplines in Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, General Practice and Public Health. The report itself is designed to be simple and concise and of course does not claim to contain all information on any pharmacological material. It does, however, give the current information and guidelines concerning immunisation. Vaccines are continually evolving and guidelines will obviously change given the nature of these developments. As Chairperson of the National Council on Ageing and Older People, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this report, Meeting the Health, Social Care and Welfare Services Information Needs of Older People in Ireland. The Council has asserted, in previous reports in the past, the need to improve information provision for older people in order to enable them to make informed decisions in relation to their health, social care and welfare services needs and preferences so that they can become partners in their own care. This is consistent with current policy initiatives intended to re-orientate services more towards the older person and to place him/her at the heart of service planning, delivery and evaluation. The last National Survey of Childrenâ?Ts Oral Health in the Republic of Ireland was carried out in 1984. The present study describes the oral health experience of children and adolescents in Ireland today. The results are of interest to the public, to policymakers and to service providers and will be of assistance in the evaluation of current oral health services and the planning of services for the next decade.
