The aim of this study was to explore the attitudes of Healthcare Professionals who work in the Substance Misuse Services compared to Healthcare Professionals who work in the Acute Mental Health Services towards clients with a dual diagnosis. A Likert type questionnaire was carried out between the two services, (n=45) from Substance Misuse and (n+54) from Mental Health Services of the multidiscipline teams. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the attitudes of the Healthcare Professionals in both Services. The Healthcare Professionals from the Substance Misuse Services displayed a more positive attitude towards clients with duel diagnosis, than professionals from the Acute Mental Health Services. These negative attitudes may affect the quality of care given to clients with a dual diagnosis. Healthcare Professionals need more knowledge and understanding about effective treatment for this client group. It is important that through collaboration from both services the care and treatment for clients with a dual diagnosis can be at optimal level. This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

This report arises from a project commissioned by the Department of Health's Equality and Human Rights Group to produce an evidence-based review with a national perspective that addresses (i) ethnic differentials in health and healthcare and (ii) evidence of effective NHS and other action, including seective examples of good practice to illustrate each area. Rather than aiming for comprehensive coverage, the Department suggested a document that focuses on selective topics and population health priorities drawn from the NHS plan, existing and developing National Service Frameworks, and other policy documents and which, collectively, are encompassed in the NHS's 10-point Race Equality Action Plan. The authors were not asked to review the evidence on other key areas (such ashypertension, stroke, disability, etc.), ethnic disparities in the wider determinants of health, and on some specific groups such as Gypsy Travellers and refugees and asylum seekers. Some of these topics are covered in other reviews.

The Patient and Client Experience Annual Report 2012-13 demonstrates that although healthcare is often highly pressurised, all Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts are ensuring that patient experience remains a priority. The report provides an analysis of the patient and client monitoring including evidence-based statements from patients; highlights areas of good practice within each of the HSC Trusts and outlines areas where further improvements are required to enhance the experience of patients and clients. The comprehensive programme of work undertaken by the six HSC Trusts in conjunction with the HSC Board and PHA to support the implementation of the Patient Client Experience Standards demonstrates a commitment to learn and an assurance to act upon the experience of patients and clients locally and regionally.
