The conference aims to provide input from national and international experts in the field of early years who will contribute to a debate about how stakeholders in Northern Ireland can progress this key agenda.Conference purpose• To inform stakeholders of the science of early years /early brain development and the links between support in antenatal and early years and improved outcomes in health, education, social and emotional development;• To highlight key local developments such as Family Nurse Partnerships;• To consider the economic benefits across society based on successful early years approaches;• To showcase emerging community and city approaches to early years interventions;• To promote and agree follow up actions.

A Study of Sexual Health Issues, Attitudes and Behaviours: The Views of Early School Leavers

World Alzheimer Report 2011 - The benefits of early diagnosis and intervention

Alzheimer's Disease International released the World Alzheimer Report 2011 - The benefits of early diagnosis and intervention on the 13th September 2011. Key Findings:As many as three-quarters of the estimated 36 million people worldwide living with dementia have not been diagnosed and hence cannot benefit from treatment, information and care. In high-income countries, only 20-50% of dementia cases are recognized and documented in primary care. In low- and middle-income countries, this proportion could be as low as 10%.Failure to diagnose often results from the false belief that dementia is a normal part of aging, and that nothing can be done to help. On the contrary, the new report finds that interventions can make a difference, even in the early stages of the illness.Drugs and psychological interventions for people with early-stage dementia can improve cognition, independence, and quality of life. Thematic reviews of early childhood policy originated in response to a significant change in Western societies in the latter part of the 20th century. In effect, the care and education of young children in the industrialised world had shifted from the private to the public sphere, to become a shared responsibility of families and the state. Not only was the provision of equal access to women to the labour market an important goal in this development, but also the issue of giving every child a fair start in life and at school.

OECD Thematic Review of Early Childhood Education and Care Policy in Ireland

Ireland is one of the smallest countries in Europe and occupies the most westerly, peripheral position. Geographically, the entire island is comprised of 32 counties, 26 of which make up the Republic of Ireland, (commonly referred to as the South), and 6 of which go to make up Northern Ireland (usually called the North), which forms part of the United Kingdom. This report is concerned with the Republic of Ireland only, which will be referred to as Ireland in the remainder of this report for ease of reading.

Ready to Learn White Paper on Early Childhood Education

The purpose of this White Paper is to set out Government policy on all issues relating to early childhood education. An essential starting point is to define what we mean by early childhood education. The Department of Education and Science�s mission is to support the development of a high quality education system which will enable individuals to develop to their full potential as persons and to participate fully as citizens in Ireland�s social and economic development. For many years, it was considered that education began when children went to school and ended when students left the formal education system at the end of first, second or third level. There is growing recognition of the importance of lifelong learning and the idea that children learn from the earliest moment and continue to learn throughout their lives. Education is concerned with all the phases of life, including the very early childhood phase.

Surveillance of influenza in Northern Ireland

The influenza season started later than normal, clinical indices began to increase marginally in mid-February, much later than previous seasons, and activity remained very low throughout, with community syndromic indicators not reaching the baseline warning threshold during the season. The peak GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2011/12 were the lowest since surveillance began in Northern Ireland in 2000. No one age-group appeared predominantly affected, with low levels of activity in all age groups, however, GP consultation rates increased in both children and adults.Influenza A (H3) was the predominant strain of the virus circulating, with small numbers of the influenza B strain circulating later in the season. Unlike the 2010/11 season when Influenza A (H1N1)2009 strain dominated in Northern Ireland, there were no detections of this subtype in 2011/12; virological activity generally corresponded to clinical activity.There were however, patients with confirmed influenza admitted to Intensive care units, across Northern Ireland during the season. Numbers were low, the average age of these patients increased compared with the previous season and one fatality was reported in this group.The proportion of over 65 year olds who received the 2011/12 seasonal influenza vaccine was 77.0%, and in those in a clinical risk group aged under 65 years was 81.7%, both of these vaccination uptake figures were a slight increase on the previous year. Influenza vaccine uptake in frontline healthcare workers also increased marginally this season to 20.8%, as did the proportion of pregnant women vaccinated during the season.

Surveillance of influenza in Northern Ireland 2012-2013

The 2012/13 influenza season started earlier than in 2011/12; however it lasted longer, with GP consultation rates being elevated for approximately four months. Clinical indices began to increase in late December and peaked in early January, with the only two instances of community syndromic indicators exceeding the baseline threshold occurring in this month. GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2012/13 were higher than those in the 2011/12 season for the majority of the season but remained low overall.Overall no one age-group appeared predominantly affected; however, older adults predominated during the peak period, with rates increasing in children during February. Rates for those aged 65 and over increased late in the season, and this was associated with influenza outbreaks in care homes for the elderly.

�The 2013/14 influenza season started later than in 2012/13, it did not last as long and was noted at generally lower levels throughout than the previous season. Clinical indices began to increase in early January and peaked in mid-March, with community syndromic indicators not exceeding the baseline threshold at any time during the season. GP influenza-like illness consultation rates in 2013/14 were lower than those in the 2012/13 season for the majority of the season and remained low overall.Overall no one age group appeared predominantly affected with rates fluctuating throughout the season. The highest rate overall however was noted among the youngest age group during the peak period.
