To address diet and lifestyle issues and improve the health of the over 50s in Gilford. Outcome: Health related issues for example heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes were raised and members became more aware of their health, lifestyle and specifically diet through individual consultations with pharmacist and nutritionist and through group sessions. The pharmacist has worked well with the GP and is broadening links with other support agencies eg CAB. The GP / Pharmacist relationship has strengthened.

The key element of the HSE South’s Programme is to enhance and develop community mental health services in Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary, to enable the service user to remain in the community to the greatest extent possible. HSE South has prioritised the implementation of the change programme and has allocated more than €20m capital funding and over €1.75m revenue funding to support this comprehensive development programme. Speaking at the briefings Mr. Pat Healy, Regional Director of Operations, HSE South said, “When this plan is delivered, clients will have access to the highest standards of services in all three counties, which should significantly improve these clients’ treatment programmes and quality of life. The National Service Users Executive are supporting the change programme, which is of immense importance to HSE South. The programme heralds the enhancement and development of community mental health services, the closure of old long stay institutions, the separation of North and South Tipperary acute inpatient mental health services and development of appropriate acute inpatient services, for the extended catchment area, in line with the national strategy for mental health “A Vision for Change”. Footprints is developing a Transition Community Initiative which will be another distinct area of work within the Healthy Living Project, as part of the group's ongoing endeavours to influence change within the Colin community, tackling health inequalities. The Building a Transition Community Initiative oversees the development of the grounds at Footprints Women's Centre and offers food growing training to local residents who will be encouraged to volunteer in the garden. A local gardener has been hired and oversees the development and training of the volunteers. The project will grow fruit and vegetables within the grounds of Footprints Women's Centre and this produce will be used within the Footprints Catering Services. Any supplies surplus to requirements will be used in schools in the neighbourhood. Skills learned by the volunteers will also be transferred to their gardens at home throughout the Colin neighbourhood. The aim is also to demonstrate how participation in this project will increase and improve the physical activity levels and mental wellbeing of residents. IPH welcomes the Regulator’s Social Action Plan as one of a range of policy measures needed to tackle escalating fuel poverty in Northern Ireland. The Social Action Plan relates to how energy suppliers and networks respond to the needs of vulnerable customers. The submission discusses the definition of vulnerable customers used by energy suppliers and calls for special consideration of householders with multiple vulnerabilities. IPH also calls for special attention to be paid to the development of appropriate social tarrifs and supports for debt management. Key messages •    The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) views this social action plan as a welcome contribution to the range of policy measures needed to tackle escalating fuel poverty in Northern Ireland. •    The activities and ethos of energy suppliers plays a significant role in alleviating fuel poverty and the threats posed to health when living in a cold, damp and energy inefficient home. •    IPH shares the view of the World Health Organisation that more evidence is needed to demonstrate the real impact of corporate social responsibility in the provision of goods and services vital to health and well-being, such as fuel and water.

This action plan focuses on three main areas: • reducing young people’s demand for alcohol by providing information, education and training to young people and their parents; •restricting the supply of alcohol via measures to reduce accessibility to alcohol (including how alcohol is priced, marketed, and promoted); and • providing treatment and support for those who require additional help. While the emphasis of this action plan is on young people, it recognises that their drinking patterns are very much influenced by modelling the drinking patterns of adults in our society, and it therefore contains actions that will impact on the entire population. Alcohol misuse - however you measure the cost, whether to the individual, the family, the community, the health service, or society as a whole - is one of the biggest public health issues facing Northern Ireland.

This project intends to build on the success in equipping individuals with mental health problems, who are obese, with the skills necessary to make healthier lifestyle choices.Particpants will work as a group and support each other. A range of sessions were held on health issues of importance to clients (stress, exercise, mental health) through information workshops, training, pharmacy clinics, cooking etc. For the participants involved in the project their confidence has grown and they are able to share their learning with others at the centre. The clients are aware of other services and how to access them. The pharmacist role played a visit to the doctors to help clients get the best out of their appointment. The mental health of those involved has also imporved and has spurred them on to make changes in their overall lifestyle.

To help encourage, facilitate and empower people to adopt healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness of obesity and its causes in order to reduce its prevalence within the target community. Outcome Through Health Classes, Leaflets and Posters, people have developed their knowledge and understanding of obesity. The relationship between members of the community and the pharmacist has also developed as as has the Pharmacists links with GPs, Dieticians, Leisure Centre Management etcï_… All participants thought the healthy weight challenge was a good idea, made them more aware of health and the pharmacy was able to offer advice, information, support and health checks. regular monitoring also helped have a positive impact on participants desire to lose weight and also had positive impact on their efforts to have healthier lifestyle.

The aim is to work with children as a means to communicating to family and friends. The practical side of the project will take local children out of the classroom surrounding and into the natural environment. The children involved will participate in growing their own fruit and vegetable garden and learn the importance of healthy diet alongside other key stage development issues such as recycling and food chains.

This project focuses on individuals learning more about their health and wellbeing and developing action plans that they will take responsibility for. This will allow participants to examine and challenge issues which impact on their mental and physical health, including medicines. This project will involve users, staff, pharmacist and other providers. Like all projects this is a 2 way learning process, the staff will be use the pharmacy as a resource and the pharmacist will gain more awareness of health issues and the impact of living with mental health issues.

This is their 3rd BCPP project and is a Level 3. Previous projects highlighted the complex health issues facing those with significant mental health problems. From their successful partnership, the pharmacist now sits on their steering group. This project will build upon previous work and aims to provide people with the skills to make healthier lifestyle choices. Participants, the pharmacist and other providers will work in partnership to design a programme that will focus on the participants supporting each other and relaying their learning to others in the centre.

Engaging the community through a health column in the local press under the direction of the Southern HSSB. Outcome: This ongoing project is working towards promoting health care in the wider community and enabling the general public to better understand the range of services offered by community pharmacy. The health column is publicised in the local press across the SHSSB area and has worked to increase people's awareness of health and has focused on local needs and information, linking in with national and local health promoting campaigns

The aim of this research was to explore the current attitudes and skills of primary care health professionals on the island of Ireland towards weight management with a view to supporting them in identifying, treating and managing the public health challenge of overweight and obesity. The objectives of this study were two-fold: To assess attitudes, current practices and knowledge of body weight status among primary care health professionals. To assess primary care health professionals’ ability to identify body weight categories in both adults and children. The target health professionals were as follows: Public health nurses (community) Public health nurses (schools) GPs and practice nurses Occupational health nurses.
