Home Accident Prevention Strategy

The overall aim of the strategy is “To reduce the number of accidental deaths and injuries in the home.” OBJECTIVES OF THE STRATEGY The key objectives are: • to reduce home accidents, particularly in those most at risk; • to raise awareness of the causes of home accidents and promote effective preventative measures to reduce such accidents; • to promote and facilitate effective training, skills and knowledge in home accident prevention across all relevant organisations, groups and individuals. These objectives will be met through integrated and effective approaches including: • education and information programmes to promote home safety, and promote a change in public behaviour towards home accident prevention; and • the use of evidence based practice, models of good practice, and by evaluating home accident prevention initiatives. OUTCOMES If successful, implementation of this strategy will lead to a reduction in the number of home accidents and contribute to the outcome “reduction in preventable deaths and diseases and improvement in wellbeing” set out in the Northern Ireland Priorities and Budget 2004-2006.

The Executive in its Programme for Government under the theme “Working for a Healthier People” gave a commitment to promoting public safety by reducing the number of injuries and deaths caused by accidents at home, at work and on the road. An overarching strategy for children and young people is also being developed, which will set out the vision, values and underlying principles, including general safety, for all children and young people and the long-term goals to make that vision a reality. This assessment tool is designed to assess the registered nursing needs of a person needing long-term care. The tool is designed to encapsulate a systematic approach to assessment whilst at the same time embracing professional decision-making that takes place in the relationship between a nurse and another person. For this reason, the tool takes the assessment through a staged approach, moving from a general ‘narrative’ based assessment of ‘domains’ of care need, to a focused assessment of risk and complexity. åÊ

The prevention of transmission of blood-borne diseases in the health-care setting

  The risk of transmission of blood-borne pathogens in the health-care setting has become a matter of increasing concern in Ireland in recent years. Health-care workers undertaking exposure-prone procedures are at risk of contracting blood-borne diseases from the patients they are treating and there is also a small risk that patients who are undergoing such procedures may become infected by the health-care workers who are treating them. An Advisory Group on the Transmission of Infectious Diseases in the Health-Care Setting was established in 1995 to advise the Minister for Health on the prevention of the transmission of such diseases. The Advisory Group published its report in 1997. It was realised at that time that this matter would need to be kept under review and a Standing Advisory Committee was established. Guidelines on this subject were published by the Advisory Committee in June1999. In the current document, these guidelines have been substantially revised in the light of recent information and technical developments and are now considered to be a Code of Practice in the area of prevention of the transmission of blood-borne pathogens in the health-care setting.
