Quarterly analysis of Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Assessments (England) Quarters 1 to 3 2009/10

Hospitals and care homes are making use of new measures designed to protect people unable to give consent for their care.The Mental Capacity Act Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards were introduced by law on 1 April 2009 to provide a legal framework for depriving someone of their liberty where they are unable to give informed consent regarding their care. The statistics presented here provide the first official information about authorisations to legally detain a person using the legislation.The safeguards apply to people aged 18 and above who suffer from a mental disorder of the mind (such as dementia or a profound learning disability) and who lack capacity to give consent to the arrangements made for their care and / or treatment. 10,000 Voices: Improving the patient experience

Patient experience is recognised as a key element in the delivery of quality healthcare. In line with this, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is carrying out an extensive piece of work across all Health and Social Care Trusts (HSCTs), with the aim of introducing a more patient-focused approach to services and shaping future healthcare in Northern Ireland. This project, called '10,000 Voices', gives patients, as well as their families and carers, the opportunity to share their overall experience and highlight anything important, such as what they particularly liked or disliked about the experience. This leaflet gives participants the information they need before taking part in '10,000 Voices' and answers questions about confidentiality and information sharing.

Newborn blood spot screening (English and 10 translations)

The newborn blood spot pre-screening information leaflet for parents has been revised to include information about sickle cell disorders (SCD) and medium chain�acyl coA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) family history. The revised pre-screening leaflet should be given to all pregnant women by 30 weeks gestation and reissued to parents following delivery, before day five.Further information about screening and the care of children with SCD is available at:

10,000 Voices annual report

I am pleased to present the first annual report of the'10,000 Voices' initiative. This initiative has been commissioned and funded by the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) and the Public Health Agency (PHA), to introduce a more patient focused approach to shaping the way services are delivered and commissioned. It provides a mechanism for patients not only to share their experience of the health services, both positive and negative, but also to affect and inform change.
