Hearing Disability Assessment - Report of the Expert Hearing Group

In November 1997, the Department of Health and Children established an expert group to examine and make recommendations on an appropriate system and criteria for the assessment of hearing disability arising from hearing loss, with particular reference to noise induced hearing loss. Report of the National Task Force on Suicide

This review describes the extent of research on women's health in Ireland and assesses its adequacy as a basis for policy. Report of the Working Group on Bacterial Meningitis and Related Conditions

Meningococcal disease is a serious condition with high morbidity and significant mortality. The Department of Health and Children’s Working Group on Bacterial Meningitis and Related Conditions has monitored the epidemiology of Meningococcal disease and in 1997, in its first report, proposed strategies to prevent this infection and its complications. This report has been reviewed and updated and a second report issued in July 1999. This Report describes the epidemiology of Meningococcal disease and includes practical guidance in relation to the management of clusters and chemoprophylaxis. The Report also includes guidelines in relation to the hospital based management of suspected Meningococcal Sepsis/Meningitis and which can be adapted depending on local circumstances Download the Report here

European Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System Report for Ireland 1998

The EHLASS survey was set up in April 1986 as a five-year demonstration project. The objective was to monitor home and leisure accidents in a harmonised manner, throughout the EU, to determine their causes, the circumstances of their occurrence, their consequences and, most importantly, to provide information on consumer products involved. Armed with accurate information, it was felt that consumer policy could be directed at the most serious problems andthe best use could be made of available resources.   Data collection systems were set up for the collection of EHLASS data in the casualty departments of selected hospitals in each of the member states. The information was subsequently gathered together by the European Commission in Brussels. Extensive analysis was undertaken on 778,838 accidents reported throughout the EU. Centralised analysis of EHLASS data proved problematic due to lack of  co-ordination in data quality. In 1989 it was decided that each member state should  produce its own annual EHLASS report in a harmonised format specified by the European Commission. An Action Plan for Dementia

The Action Plan takes as its guiding principle the recognition of the individuality of the person with dementia and of his or her individual needs. This principle has informed and influenced the development of the plan. The needs and uniqueness of the person with dementia must be paramount when we talk of care and service provision. Action on the treatment of dementia can be delayed no longer. Given the increasing proportion of older people in the population and the higher prevalence of dementia in older age groups, action is needed now.
