A cardiac-triggered free-breathing three-dimensional (3D) balanced fast field-echo projection renal magnetic resonance (MR) angiographic sequence was investigated for in-stent lumen visualization of a dedicated metallic renal artery stent. Fourteen prototype stents were deployed in the renal arteries of six pigs (in two pigs, three stents were deployed). Projection renal MR angiography was compared with standard contrast material-enhanced 3D breath-hold MR angiography. Artifact-free in-stent lumen visualization was achieved with both projection MR angiography and contrast-enhanced MR angiography. These promising results warrant further studies for visualization of in-stent restenosis.

Characterisation of nanoparticles (NP) based on size distribution, surface area, reactivity, and aggregation status of nanoparticles (NP) are of prime importance because they are usually closely related to toxicity. To date, most of the toxicity studies are quite time and money consuming. In the present study we report the oxidative properties of a panel of various NP (four Carbonaceous, nine Metal oxides, and one Metal as showed in Table 1) assessed with an acellular reactivity test measuring dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption (Sauvain et al. 2008). Such a test allows determining the ability of NP to catalyse the transfer of electrons from DTT to oxygen. DTT is used as a reductant species. NP were diluted and sonicated in Tween 80® to a final concentration of 50 g/mL. Printex 90 was diluted 5 times before doing the DTT assay because of its expected higher activity. Suspensions were characterised for NP size distribution by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (Nanosight©). Fresh solutions were incubated with DTT (100 μM). Aliquots were taken every 5 min and the remaining DTT was determined by reacting it with DTNB. The reaction rate was determined for NP suspensions and blank in parallel. The mean Brownian size distribution of NP agglomerates in suspension is presented in Table 1. D values correspond to 10th, and 50th percentiles of the particle diameters. All the NP agglomerated in Tween 80 with a D50 size corresponding to at least twice their primary size, except for Al2O3 (300 nm). The DTT test showed Printex 90 sample to be the most reactive one, followed by Diesel EPA and Nanotubes. Most of the metallic NP was nonresponding toward this test, except for NiO and Ag which reacted positively and ZnO which presented the most negative reactivity (see Figure 1). This last observation suggests that electron transfer between DTT and oxygen is hindered in presence of ZnO compared with the blank. Such "stabilization" could be attributable to ZnO dissolution and complexation between Zn2+ ions and DTT.

BACKGROUND: Persisting metallic intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) with a ferrous content have been associated with ocular siderosis and retinal degeneration. We describe two patients in whom a metallic IOFB containing iron was left embedded for many years in the choroid and sclera after having penetrated through the vitreous and the retina. HISTORY AND SIGNS: Two male patients, aged 41 and 48 years, presented with a metallic IOFB sustained during a work accident involving metal tools. THERAPY AND OUTCOME: For the first patient it was deemed unwise to operate, as the IOFB was also lodged very deeply in the choroid and sclera in the inferior temporal quadrant. The second patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy, but the IOFB could not be removed surgically as it was too deeply embedded in the sclera and choroid. After a period of 6 years (Case 1) and 4 years (Case 2) of follow-up, visual acuity remained at 1.0 and the IOFB was encased in a fibrotic capsule in both cases. Full-field and multifocal electroretinograms showed an inter-ocular asymmetry at baseline, which remained stable during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Ocular siderosis may not develop in patients with a deeply embedded metallic IOFB. Regular monitoring of both visual function and the electroretinogram is mandatory when the IOFB is left inside the eye.

The exposure to dust and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) of 15 truck drivers from Geneva, Switzerland, was measured. The drivers were divided between "long-distance" drivers and "local" drivers and between smokers and nonsmokers and were compared with a control group of 6 office workers who were also divided into smokers and nonsmokers. Dust was measured on 1 workday both by a direct-reading instrument and by sampling. The local drivers showed higher exposure to dust (0.3 mg/m3) and PAH than the long-distance drivers (0.1 mg/m3), who showed no difference with the control group. This observation may be due to the fact that the local drivers spend more time in more polluted areas, such as streets with heavy traffic and construction sites, than do the long-distance drivers. Smoking does not influence exposure to dust and PAH of professional truck drivers, as measured in this study, probably because the ventilation rate of the truck cabins is relatively high even during cold days (11-15 r/h). The distribution of dust concentrations was shown in some cases to be quite different from the expected log-normal distribution. The contribution of diesel exhaust to these exposures could not be estimated since no specific tracer was used. However, the relatively low level of dust exposure dose not support the hypothesis that present day levels of diesel exhaust particulates play a significant role in the excess occurrence of lung cancer observed in professional truck drivers.

OBJECT Monoenergetic imaging with dual-energy CT has been proposed to reduce metallic artifacts in comparison with conventional polychromatic CT. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate and define the optimal dual-energy CT imaging parameters for specific cervical spinal implant alloy compositions. METHODS Spinal fixation rods of cobalt-chromium or titanium alloy inserted into the cervical spine section of an Alderson Rando anthropomorphic phantom were imaged ex vivo with fast-kilovoltage switching CT at 80 and 140 peak kV. The collimation width and field of view were varied between 20 and 40 mm and medium to large, respectively. Extrapolated monoenergetic images were generated at 70, 90, 110, and 130 kiloelectron volts (keV). The standard deviation of voxel intensities along a circular line profile around the spine was used as an index of the magnitude of metallic artifact. RESULTS The metallic artifact was more conspicuous around the fixation rods made of cobalt-chromium than those of titanium alloy. The magnitude of metallic artifact seen with titanium fixation rods was minimized at monoenergies of 90 keV and higher, using a collimation width of 20 mm and large field of view. The magnitude of metallic artifact with cobalt-chromium fixation rods was minimized at monoenergies of 110 keV and higher; collimation width or field of view had no effect. CONCLUSIONS Optimization of acquisition settings used with monoenergetic CT studies might yield reduced metallic artifacts.

BACKGROUND: Coronary in-stent restenosis cannot be directly assessed by magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) because of the local signal void of currently used stainless steel stents. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of a new, dedicated, coronary MR imaging (MRI) stent for artifact-free, coronary MRA and in-stent lumen and vessel wall visualization. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifteen prototype stents were deployed in coronary arteries of 15 healthy swine and investigated with a double-oblique, navigator-gated, free-breathing, T2-prepared, 3D cartesian gradient-echo sequence; a T2-prepared, 3D spiral gradient-echo sequence; and a T2-prepared, 3D steady-state, free-precession coronary MRA sequence. Furthermore, black-blood vessel wall imaging by a dual-inversion-recovery, turbo spin-echo sequence was performed. Artifacts of the stented vessel segment and signal intensities of the coronary vessel lumen inside and outside the stent were assessed. With all investigated sequences, the vessel lumen and wall could be visualized without artifacts, including the stented vessel segment. No signal intensity alterations inside the stent when compared with the vessel lumen outside the stent were found. CONCLUSIONS: The new, coronary MRI stent allows for completely artifact-free coronary MRA and vessel wall imaging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and tolerance of self-expanding metallic stent insertion under fluoroscopic guidance for palliation of symptoms related to malignant gastroduodenal obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two patients (38 men, 34 women) aged 25-98 years (mean, 62 years) with duodenal (n = 43), antropyloric (n = 13), surgical gastrojejunostomy (n = 10), or pyloroduodenal (n = 6) malignant obstruction were referred for insertion of self-expanding metallic stents over a 6-year period. Stent insertion was performed with use of a peroral or transgastric approach when necessary (n = 11). RESULTS: Stents were successfully inserted in 70 of the 72 patients (97%) and provided symptom relief in 65 patients (90%). Inserted stents were mainly uncovered vascular (n = 55) or enteral (n = 10) Wallstents. One hundred eight stents were initially inserted: one, two, three, or four stents were indicated in 43, 17, nine, and one patient, respectively. Mean follow-up was 119 days (range, 4-513 days). Mean stent patency was 113 days (range, 4-513 days). Mean survival of patients was 120 days. During follow-up, stent obstruction occurred in seven patients as a result of tumoral overgrowth (n = 5) or ingrowth (n = 2). Complications occurred in 12 of the 72 patients (17%), including stent migration (n = 8), stent fracture (n = 1), duodenal perforation (n = 1), and death related to general anesthesia (n = 1). CONCLUSION: Despite a significant complication rate, self-expanding metallic stent insertion under fluoroscopic guidance appears to be a feasible and useful technique in the palliative management of malignant gastroduodenal obstruction.

Metallic foreign bodies are rarely found in the maxillary sinus, and usually they have a dental origin.Potential complications related to foreign bodies include recurrent sinusitis, rhinolith formation, cutaneous fistula, chemical poisoning, facial neuralgic pain and even malignancies. Two main surgical approaches are currently used for the removal of foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus: the bone flap and the endoscopic sinus techniques. We are reporting two unusual cases of large high-velocity foreign bodies removed by a modified maxillary lateral antrotomy, with free bone flap repositioning and fixation with a titanium miniplate.

We present the optical properties of Na0.7CoO2 single crystals, measured over a broad spectral range as a function of temperature (T). The capability to cover the energy range from the far-infrared up to the ultraviolet allows us to perform reliable Kramers-Kronig transformation, in order to obtain the absorption spectrum (i.e., the complex optical conductivity). To the complex optical conductivity we apply the generalized Drude model, extracting the frequency dependence of the scattering rate (Gamma) and effective mass (m*) of the itinerant charge carriers. We find that Gamma(omega) at low temperatures and for similar to omega. This suggests that Na0.7CoO2 is at the verge of a spin-density-wave metallic phase.
