Introduction: Low back pain is a common disorder touching up to 80% of the population, with redundancies of up to 70%. A small proportion would go on to develop chronic low back pain (LBP) with reduced work capacity and they would count for the majority of the costs. Up to day, a multi-disciplinary treatment program is one of the best approaches. In the program one of the mile-stones is restoration of function. The aim of this study was to follow patients, according to the endurance change after the program and its influence on workability during one year after inclusion in a such program. Method: Patients were following a multidisciplinary treatment for 3 weeks including physiotherapy, occupation measures combined with an educational program with behavioural and psychological interventions on an outpatient program. We studied the endurance with the help of the Bruce test, accomplished at the beginning and at the end of the program. On the other hand the patients filled out pain questionnaires and PACT score according their own impression on workability. Results: There were a clear relation between the increase in the cardiovascular endurance and the increased workability. Almost every patient presented an increase in the VO2 max, even though the workability did not follow. This increase were associated with a decrease in pain apprehension. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary treatment program, teaching the patients how to care with their pain and to accept it even if it persist is successful in lowering the global pain. If the program allows the patients to strengthen the endurance, the workability will increase in parallel. In this way the patients were able to reduce the consummation of medicaments and to increase the work capacity.

Episodic memories for autobiographical events that happen in unique spatiotemporal contexts are central to defining who we are. Yet, before 2 years of age, children are unable to form or store episodic memories for recall later in life, a phenomenon known as infantile amnesia. Here, we studied the development of allocentric spatial memory, a fundamental component of episodic memory, in two versions of a real-world memory task requiring 18 month- to 5-year-old children to search for rewards hidden beneath cups distributed in an open-field arena. Whereas children 25-42-months-old were not capable of discriminating three reward locations among 18 possible locations in absence of local cues marking these locations, children older than 43 months found the reward locations reliably. These results support previous findings suggesting that allocentric spatial memory, if present, is only rudimentary in children under 3.5 years of age. However, when tested with only one reward location among four possible locations, children 25-39-months-old found the reward reliably in absence of local cues, whereas 18-23-month-olds did not. Our findings thus show that the ability to form a basic allocentric representation of the environment is present by 2 years of age, and its emergence coincides temporally with the offset of infantile amnesia. However, the ability of children to distinguish and remember closely related spatial locations improves from 2 to 3.5 years of age, a developmental period marked by persistent deficits in long-term episodic memory known as childhood amnesia. These findings support the hypothesis that the differential maturation of distinct hippocampal circuits contributes to the emergence of specific memory processes during early childhood.

Cet article présente une réflexion sur le développement de l'identité de soi chez l'enfant. Nous étudions pour cela le développement de l'autobiographie, la façon dont l'enfant apprend à raconter qui « il » est. Les narrations autobiographiques apparaissent tôt dans le développement dans une forme linguistique même rudimentaire, et sont produites notamment lorsque l'enfant a vécu une expérience émotionnellement chargée. La narration autobiographique permet d'intégrer le divers de l'expérience en un tout cohérent, selon la perspective du narrateur, et de donner sens aux événements vécus en les organisant en fonction d'un agent, d'une action, d'un temps et d'un lieu. La sélection des événements à raconter et la valeur à leur donner résultent d'un apprentissage social, réalisé en premier lieu dans la famille, qui va à long terme modéliser la façon dont l'enfant se raconte. Des exemples d'interactions narratives mère-enfant illustrant cet apprentissage sont présentés. A contrario, le conflit familial peut menacer cette intégration ; différentes formes de conflit et leurs conséquences possibles sur le développement de l'autobiographie sont évoquées. This paper presents a reflection about the development of the self in children, through the study of autobiographical narratives - i.e. the way the child tells who "she/he" is. Children produce narratives early in the development, even in a simple linguistic form. Narratives are first triggered when the child has lived an emotional event. The function of narratives is to integrate the various aspects of the lived event in a coherent whole. It organizes the events according to an agent, an action, a time and a place. The child learns in the interaction with significant others what events are to be told and which is the value to give to them. This social learning will in the long run shape the way the child tells who she/he is. We illustrate this process through examples of narrative interactions between mothers and children. Finally, the way conflicts in the family might disturb this learning process is discussed, as well as the consequences they might have on the development of the self.

After decades of stability, Switzerland's unions entered a period of turbulence in the early 1990s: their status as junior partner in the corporatist growth pact was challenged by the economic crisis, business organizations' neoliberal turn and an abrupt decline in membership. These challenges put unions under pressure to initiate revitalization efforts. They first responded by investing more resources into political action, using direct democratic instruments to block neoliberal reforms. In parallel, they adopted new means of recruitment, affiliating white-collar unions, targeting private services and resorting more frequently to strikes. Finally, they rationalized their organizational structure through a series of union mergers.

A character network represents relations between characters from a text; the relations are based on text proximity, shared scenes/events, quoted speech, etc. Our project sketches a theoretical framework for character network analysis, bringing together narratology, both close and distant reading approaches, and social network analysis. It is in line with recent attempts to automatise the extraction of literary social networks (Elson, 2012; Sack, 2013) and other studies stressing the importance of character- systems (Woloch, 2003; Moretti, 2011). The method we use to build the network is direct and simple. First, we extract co-occurrences from a book index, without the need for text analysis. We then describe the narrative roles of the characters, which we deduce from their respective positions in the network, i.e. the discourse. As a case study, we use the autobiographical novel Les Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. We start by identifying co-occurrences of characters in the book index of our edition (Slatkine, 2012). Subsequently, we compute four types of centrality: degree, closeness, betweenness, eigenvector. We then use these measures to propose a typology of narrative roles for the characters. We show that the two parts of Les Confessions, written years apart, are structured around mirroring central figures that bear similar centrality scores. The first part revolves around the mentor of Rousseau; a figure of openness. The second part centres on a group of schemers, depicting a period of deep paranoia. We also highlight characters with intermediary roles: they provide narrative links between the societies in the life of the author. The method we detail in this complete case study of character network analysis can be applied to any work documented by an index. Un réseau de personnages modélise les relations entre les personnages d'un récit : les relations sont basées sur une forme de proximité dans le texte, l'apparition commune dans des événements, des citations dans des dialogues, etc. Notre travail propose un cadre théorique pour l'analyse des réseaux de personnages, rassemblant narratologie, close et distant reading, et analyse des réseaux sociaux. Ce travail prolonge les tentatives récentes d'automatisation de l'extraction de réseaux sociaux tirés de la littérature (Elson, 2012; Sack, 2013), ainsi que les études portant sur l'importance des systèmes de personnages (Woloch, 2003; Moretti, 2011). La méthode que nous utilisons pour construire le réseau est directe et simple. Nous extrayons les co-occurrences d'un index sans avoir recours à l'analyse textuelle. Nous décrivons les rôles narratifs des personnages en les déduisant de leurs positions relatives dans le réseau, donc du discours. Comme étude de cas, nous avons choisi le roman autobiographique Les Confessions, de Jean- Jacques Rousseau. Nous déduisons les co-occurrences entre personnages de l'index présent dans l'édition Slatkine (Rousseau et al., 2012). Sur le réseau obtenu, nous calculons quatre types de centralité : le degré, la proximité, l'intermédiarité et la centralité par vecteur propre. Nous utilisons ces mesures pour proposer une typologie des rôles narratifs des personnages. Nous montrons que les deux parties des Confessions, écrites à deux époques différentes, sont structurées autour de deux figures centrales, qui obtiennent des mesures de centralité similaires. La première partie est construite autour du mentor de Rousseau, qui a symbolisé une grande ouverture. La seconde partie se focalise sur un groupe de comploteurs, et retrace une période marquée par la paranoïa chez l'auteur. Nous mettons également en évidence des personnages jouant des rôles intermédiaires, et de fait procurant un lien narratif entre les différentes sociétés couvrant la vie de l'auteur. La méthode d'analyse des réseaux de personnages que nous décrivons peut être appliquée à tout texte de fiction comportant un index.

This article discusses one of Lewkenor's more obscure works, The Resolved Gentleman (1594 - STC 15139), in the context of Elizabethan court politics in the 1590s, with a particular emphasis on the author's own experience of dissent, exile to Catholic Spain in the 1580s and return to England in the early 1590s. A translation of Hernando de Acuña's El Caballero Determinado, itself a reworking of Olivier de la Marche's Chevalier Délibéré (1483), the Resolved Gentleman bends the conventions of medieval chivalric allegory to articulate Lewkenor's own experience of alienation and dissent in the specific context of the factionalism of the 1590s. Beneath Lewkenor's seemingly self-effacing, 'humanist' translation it is in fact possible to discern a complex set of criticisms of Elizabeth's court. The knight's 'wandering' and 'errance' thus becomes a complex, multivalent figure that reverberates with a number of autobiographical meanings: the knight's exile becomes in Lewkenor's hands a figure of his own forced exile to Catholic Spain, and the account of the knight's quest functions as an oblique allusion to his own efforts to make his way back to Elizabeth's court. More importantly, however, these 'personal' meanings acquire a wider, political valence in the context of the allegory, and the narrative as a whole thus becomes a subtle, perceptive but scathing criticism of the Elizabethan court in the 1590's and the 'contraction' of royal favour that resulted in particular in the exclusion of capable, experienced but Catholic counsellors like Lewkenor himself. Articulating the frustration of this younger generation of alienated but fundamentally loyalist Catholics, Lewkenor paints a picture of a failed quest for favour, where the questing knight is finally forced to retire from the active life and withdraw to a rustic hermitage that is not only incompatible with his own ideal of the vita activa, but also dangerously smacks of unregenerate, and potentially seditious Catholicism.

This research aims to provide a contribution towards understanding how and why certain people can display disobedience behaviors, to overcome unjust situations, and withstand persecutions deployed by authority. The paper presents a hermeneutic content analysis of the autobiographical speeches and texts of Gandhi, M. L. King and Mandela. Our results show that parents' value orientation, experience of injustice during childhood and exploration of alternative viewpoints during adolescence play a crucial role in structuring prosocial disobedience. Findings show also that social responsibility and ingroup communication are important conditions for facing persecutions without dropping original goals.

The hippocampal formation is essential for the processing of episodic memories for autobiographical events that happen in unique spatiotemporal contexts. Interestingly, before 2 years of age, children are unable to form or store episodic memories for recall later in life, a phenomenon known as infantile amnesia. From 2 to 7 years of age, there are fewer memories than predicted based on a forgetting function alone, a phenomenon known as childhood amnesia. Here, we discuss the postnatal maturation of the primate hippocampal formation with the goal of characterizing the development of the neurobiological substrates thought to subserve the emergence of episodic memory. Distinct regions, layers and cells of the hippocampal formation exhibit different profiles of structural and molecular development during early postnatal life. The protracted period of neuronal addition and maturation in the dentate gyrus is accompanied by the late maturation of specific layers in different hippocampal regions that are located downstream from the dentate gyrus, particularly CA3. In contrast, distinct layers in several hippocampal regions, particularly CA1, which receive direct projections from the entorhinal cortex, exhibit an early maturation. In addition, hippocampal regions that are more highly interconnected with subcortical structures, including the subiculum, presubiculum, parasubiculum and CA2, mature even earlier. These findings, together with our studies of the development of human spatial memory, support the hypothesis that the differential maturation of distinct hippocampal circuits might underlie the differential emergence of specific "hippocampus-dependent" memory processes, culminating in the emergence of episodic memory concomitant with the maturation of all hippocampal circuits.

Introduction. - La lombalgie chronique, définie comme une douleur de plus de 3 mois, est un état cher pour la société. Les patients les plus chers sont ceux avec des longs arrêts de travail. Plusieurs études ont été fait sur des modèles de réhabilitation travaillant en augmentant la confiance corporelle de ses patients : une possibilité reste un programme interdisciplinaire. IL traite la situation déconditionnée dans sa globalité de manière interdisciplinaire. Le but de cette étude était d'analyser la diminution de l'appréhension à l'aide de questionnaires : un concernant la capacité de travail (PACT) et un sur l'appréhension (FABQ). Patients et Méthodes. - Nous avons étudié les résultants de 520 de nos patients ayant accomplis un programme interdisciplinaire, et qui ont été suivis sur 24 mois. Le programme contenait un réentraînement physique, du work hardening, le tout dans un contexte cognitive-comportemental. Nous avons analysé la diminution de l'appréhension durant le temps à l'aide de questionnaires d'autoévaluation (PACT et FABQ). Résultats. - Nous avons vu une claire augmentation de la capacité de travail globale entre le début du programme et à 24 mois faisant passer de 48 à 80,4 %. En parallèle il y avait une augmentation subjective de la capacité physique mesurée par le Pact. Cette augmentation était corrélée avec une diminution de l'appréhension selon le Fabq. Le retour au travail n'était pas corrélé à une amélioration des performances physiques, mais dans moins d'appréhension. Conclusion. - Dans la lombalgie chronique, avec des patients ayant des nombreux arrêts de travail, un programme interdisciplinaire de réhabilitation a un effet positif sur l'appréhension. Cette corrélation était encore présente sur le côté psychologique avec moins d'appréhensions et une augmentation globale au SF 36. Ainsi une meilleure confiance corporelle reste un facteur important dans les programmes de restauration fonctionnelle.

Abstract Human experience takes place in the line of mental time (MT) created through 'self-projection' of oneself to different time-points in the past or future. Here we manipulated self-projection in MT not only with respect to one's life events but also with respect to one's faces from different past and future time-points. Behavioural and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging activity showed three independent effects characterized by (i) similarity between past recollection and future imagination, (ii) facilitation of judgements related to the future as compared with the past, and (iii) facilitation of judgements related to time-points distant from the present. These effects were found with respect to faces and events, and also suggest that brain mechanisms of MT are independent of whether actual life episodes have to be re-experienced or pre-experienced, recruiting a common cerebral network including the anteromedial temporal, posterior parietal, inferior frontal, temporo-parietal and insular cortices. These behavioural and neural data suggest that self-projection in time is a fundamental aspect of MT, relying on neural structures encoding memory, mental imagery and self.

La présente thèse s'inscrit dans la continuité de la publication des fouilles menées de 1986 à 2002 sur le site de la villa gallo-romaine d'Orbe-Boscéaz/VD par l'Institut d'archéologie et des sciences de l'antiquité de l'Université de Lausanne (URBA I, à paraître dans les Cahiers d'archéologie romande). Elle constitue l'analyse approfondie du corpus des peintures murales fragmentaires -succinctement présentées dans URBA I - appartenant à la pars urbana qui succéda, entre 161 et 180 apr. J.-C, à un édifice plus petit du Ier s. de notre ère -dont les peintures sont publiées dans l'ouvrage sus-mentionné. N'ayant subi que de très rares modifications, cette pars urbana de caractère palatial forme un "ensemble clos" autorisant une analyse globale de la conception architecturale et décorative voulue par le bâtisseur ou son commanditaire. Le corpus pictural, composé d'un matériel assez ingrat remplissant quelque 600 cagettes de stockage, offre de ce fait l'intérêt d'une grande homogénéité chronologique et reflète la cohérence et l'unité de la décoration peinte d'origine. Le travail de discrimination et de remontage des ensembles a permet d'individualiser au moins 220 décors et revêtements muraux; l'ensemble des hypothèses de restitution des peintures donne ainsi une image minimale de l'environnement pictural de la pars urbana. Ce corpus pictural n'est toutefois que l'une des composantes du programme décoratif, aussi l'analyse de ses caractéristiques est-elle confrontée à celle des autres composantes ornementales (architecture, placages de marbres et surtout le remarquable ensemble des mosaïques qui fait la célébrité du site). La conjugaison des divers éléments et leur répartition au sein d'un plan bien connu et très symétrique orientent sur les choix décoratifs majeurs, et permettent sinon de reconstituer, tout au moins d'approcher la conception du programme architectural et décoratif voulu par le commanditaire ou son architecte; ce programme, comme fréquemment, reflète le statut du commanditaire, le met évidemment en scène et tient un discours sur la villa, adressé tant aux habitants qu'aux visiteurs. On trouvera dans le travail six chapitres formant l'essentiel de l'exploitation du corpus pictural urbigène. Le premier chapitre est introductif, et présente dans ses grandes lignes la pars urbana de Boscéaz comme cadre de référence. Il est suivi par un état des lieux des peintures murales retrouvées sur le site, abordant leur répartition, leur état de conservation et la méthodologie adoptée pour leur traitement comme leur étude (chapitre 2). Le chapitre 3 constitue l'étude technique des enduits peints. Il réunit toutes les observations que l'on peut faire sur les techniques de réalisation des peinture murales, de la préparation et la pose des mortiers de support aux tours de main des peintres pour le rendu d'un motif. Ce chapitre s'inscrit dans la perspective, appliquée à Boscéaz, d'études marquantes comme celles sur les techniques de préparation des parois (Allag /Barbet 1972, Barbet 1995) sur l'identification des pigments (PACT 17, 1985, Béarat 1997, Colloque de Fribourg 1997) et sur l'analyse des mortiers (Coutelas 2003). Suit le catalogue des peintures, basé sur une sélection de 3414 plaques remontées et fragments (chapitre 4) : il propose une description rigoureuse et systématique des motifs, ainsi que leur analyse stylistique qui apporte les éléments comparatifs permettant la compréhension du matériel, et justifiant son interprétation, voire sa restitution. Les décors y sont présentés par local de découverte; un paragraphe introductif réunit les données de fouille et des informations sur le local ou le prélèvement des enduits, et donne le nombre et la détermination des décors retrouvés. Chacun d'eux fait l'objet d'une notice regroupant: une détermination par le mortier de support (le tectorium); les observations techniques diverses; la description, la restitution le cas échéant, et l'analyse stylistique. Cette dernière privilégie les comparaisons locales, en Suisse d'abord puis dans les pays limitrophes de façon à mettre en évidence les liens plausibles entre certains sites et les éventuels indices d'une production régionale. La documentation graphique qui accompagne chaque décor dans le volume d'illustrations est constituée avant tout des planches photographiques des fragments à l'échelle 1:3, accompagnés le cas échéant de dessins au trait justifiant la lecture des motifs. Neuropsychological and neuroimaging data suggest that the self-memory system can be fractionated into three functionally independent systems processing personal information at several levels of abstraction, including episodic memories of one's life (episodic autobiographical memory, EAM), semantic knowledge of facts about one's life (semantic autobiographical memory, SAM), and semantic knowledge of one's personality [conceptual self, (CS)]. Through the study of two developmental amnesic patients suffering of neonatal brain injuries, we explored how the different facets of the self-memory system develop when growing up with bilateral hippocampal atrophy. Neuropsychological evaluations showed that both of them suffered from dramatic episodic learning disability with no sense of recollection (Remember/Know procedure), whereas their semantic abilities differed, being completely preserved (Valentine) or not (Jocelyn). Magnetic resonance imaging, including quantitative volumetric measurements of the hippocampus and adjacent (entorhinal, perirhinal, and temporopolar) cortex, showed severe bilateral atrophy of the hippocampus in both patients, with additional atrophy of adjacent cortex in Jocelyn. Exploration of EAM and SAM according to lifetime periods covering the entire lifespan (TEMPAu task, Piolino et al., 2009) showed that both patients had marked impairments in EAM, as they lacked specificity, details and sense of recollection, whereas SAM was completely normal in Valentine, but impaired in Jocelyn. Finally, measures of patients' CS (Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, Fitts and Warren, 1996), checked by their mothers, were generally within normal range, but both patients showed a more positive self-concept than healthy controls. These two new cases support a modular account of the medial-temporal lobe with episodic memory and recollection depending on the hippocampus, and semantic memory and familiarity on adjacent cortices. Furthermore, they highlight developmental episodic and semantic functional independence within the self-memory system suggesting that SAM and CS may be acquired without episodic memories.

Previous functional MRI (fMRI) studies have associated anterior hippocampus with imagining and recalling scenes, imagining the future, recalling autobiographical memories and visual scene perception. We have observed that this typically involves the medial rather than the lateral portion of the anterior hippocampus. Here, we investigated which specific structures of the hippocampus underpin this observation. We had participants imagine novel scenes during fMRI scanning, as well as recall previously learned scenes from two different time periods (one week and 30 min prior to scanning), with analogous single object conditions as baselines. Using an extended segmentation protocol focussing on anterior hippocampus, we first investigated which substructures of the hippocampus respond to scenes, and found both imagination and recall of scenes to be associated with activity in presubiculum/parasubiculum, a region associated with spatial representation in rodents. Next, we compared imagining novel scenes to recall from one week or 30 min before scanning. We expected a strong response to imagining novel scenes and 1-week recall, as both involve constructing scene representations from elements stored across cortex. By contrast, we expected a weaker response to 30-min recall, as representations of these scenes had already been constructed but not yet consolidated. Both imagination and 1-week recall of scenes engaged anterior hippocampal structures (anterior subiculum and uncus respectively), indicating possible roles in scene construction. By contrast, 30-min recall of scenes elicited significantly less activation of anterior hippocampus but did engage posterior CA3. Together, these results elucidate the functions of different parts of the anterior hippocampus, a key brain area about which little is definitely known.
