AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Chronic exposure of pancreatic beta cells to proinflammatory cytokines leads to impaired insulin secretion and apoptosis. ARE/poly(U)-binding factor 1 (AUF1) belongs to a protein family that controls mRNA stability and translation by associating with adenosine- and uridine-rich regions of target messengers. We investigated the involvement of AUF1 in cytokine-induced beta cell dysfunction. METHODS: Production and subcellular distribution of AUF1 isoforms were analysed by western blotting. To test for their role in the control of beta cell functions, each isoform was overproduced individually in insulin-secreting cells. The contribution to cytokine-mediated beta cell dysfunction was evaluated by preventing the production of AUF1 isoforms by RNA interference. The effect of AUF1 on the production of potential targets was assessed by western blotting. RESULTS: MIN6 cells and human pancreatic islets were found to produce four AUF1 isoforms (p42>p45>p37>p40). AUF1 isoforms were mainly localised in the nucleus but were partially translocated to the cytoplasm upon exposure of beta cells to cytokines and activation of the ERK pathway. Overproduction of AUF1 did not affect glucose-induced insulin secretion but promoted apoptosis. This effect was associated with a decrease in the production of the anti-apoptotic proteins, B cell leukaemia/lymphoma 2 (BCL2) and myeloid cell leukaemia sequence 1 (MCL1). Silencing of AUF1 isoforms restored the levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins, attenuated the activation of the nuclear factor-κB (NFκB) pathway, and protected the beta cells from cytokine-induced apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our findings point to a contribution of AUF1 to the deleterious effects of cytokines on beta cell functions and suggest a role for this RNA-binding protein in the early phases of type 1 diabetes.

There is considerable agreement that the use of human bodies for teaching and research remains important, yet not all universities use dissection to teach human gross anatomy. The concept of body donation has evolved over centuries and there are still considerable discrepancies among countries regarding the means by which human bodies are acquired and used for education and research. Many countries have well-established donation programs and use body dissection to teach most if not all human gross anatomy. In contrast, there are countries without donation programs that use unclaimed bodies or perhaps a few donated bodies instead. In several countries, use of cadavers for dissection is unthinkable for cultural or religious reasons. Against this background, successful donation programs are highlighted in the present review, emphasizing those aspects of the programs that make them successful. Looking to the future, we consider what best practice could look like and how the use of unclaimed bodies for anatomy teaching could be replaced. From an ethical point of view, countries that depend upon unclaimed bodies of dubious provenance are encouraged to use these reports and adopt strategies for developing successful donation programs. In many countries, the act of body donation has been guided by laws and ethical frameworks and has evolved alongside the needs for medical knowledge and for improved teaching of human anatomy. There will also be a future need for human bodies to ensure optimal pre- and post-graduate training and for use in biomedical research. Good body donation practice should be adopted wherever possible, moving away from the use of unclaimed bodies of dubious provenance and adopting strategies to favor the establishment of successful donation programs. The inadequacies and obsolescence of Eurocentric theories based on a binaryand static worldview have become a staple topic of postcolonial studies, and tosome extent also of translation studies. Nonetheless, the literary texts that arecalled upon in order to show the dynamism and hybridity of (post)modern worksbelong for the most part to the languages of the former colonial powers, especiallyEnglish, and remain inserted in a system that construes literatures interms of opposition. As a consequence, there is outside India a doubly misleadingunderstanding of Indian literatures other than those written in English:firstly, that translations of works in Hindi and in the Indian bhāṣā seem to belacking, if not inexistent, and secondly, that these "minor" literatures - as theyare regularly termed - are still often viewed as being highly dependent on theidea of "tradition," in opposition to the "postmodern" hybridity of the literatureswritten in the "dominant" languages, such as English or French. Againstthese views and supported by the analysis of Ajñeya's works in Hindi togetherwith their English translations, this paper aims to show: 1) that translationsfrom Hindi, which are not in fact non-existent, are mainly carried out in India,and 2) that Ajñeya's works, while representing a significant instance of the effectivehybridity present in Indian literatures, help to illustrate the moving spaceof translation. This demonstration effectively invalidates the above-mentionedoppositional standpoint.

BACKGROUND: The WOSI (Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index) is a self-administered quality of life questionnaire designed to be used as a primary outcome measure in clinical trials on shoulder instability, as well as to measure the effect of an intervention on any particular patient. It is validated and is reliable and sensitive. As it is designed to measure subjective outcome, it is important that translation should be methodologically rigorous, as it is subject to both linguistic and cultural interpretation. OBJECTIVE: To produce a French language version of the WOSI that is culturally adapted to both European and North American French-speaking populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A validated protocol was used to create a French language WOSI questionnaire (WOSI-Fr) that would be culturally acceptable for both European and North American French-speaking populations. Reliability and responsiveness analyses were carried out, and the WOSI-Fr was compared to the F-QuickDASH-D/S (Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand-French translation), and Walch-Duplay scores. RESULTS: A French language version of the WOSI (WOSI-Fr) was accepted by a multinational committee. The WOSI-Fr was then validated using a total of 144 native French-speaking subjects from Canada and Switzerland. Comparison of results on two WOSI-Fr questionnaires completed at a mean interval of 16 days showed that the WOSI-Fr had strong reliability, with a Pearson and interclass correlation of r=0.85 (P=0.01) and ICC=0.84 [95% CI=0.78-0.88]. Responsiveness, at a mean 378.9 days after surgical intervention, showed strong correlation with that of the F-QuickDASH-D/S, with r=0.67 (P<0.01). Moreover, a standardized response means analysis to calculate effect size for both the WOSI-Fr and the F-QuickDASH-D/S showed that the WOSI-Fr had a significantly greater ability to detect change (SRM 1.55 versus 0.87 for the WOSI-Fr and F-QuickDASH-D/S respectively, P<0.01). The WOSI-Fr showed fair correlation with the Walch-Duplay. DISCUSSION: A French-language translation of the WOSI questionnaire was created and validated for use in both Canadian and Swiss French-speaking populations. This questionnaire will facilitate outcome assessment in French-speaking settings, collaboration in multinational studies and comparison between studies performed in different countries. Among the largest resources for biological sequence data is the large amount of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) available in public and proprietary databases. ESTs provide information on transcripts but for technical reasons they often contain sequencing errors. Therefore, when analyzing EST sequences computationally, such errors must be taken into account. Earlier attempts to model error prone coding regions have shown good performance in detecting and predicting these while correcting sequencing errors using codon usage frequencies. In the research presented here, we improve the detection of translation start and stop sites by integrating a more complex mRNA model with codon usage bias based error correction into one hidden Markov model (HMM), thus generalizing this error correction approach to more complex HMMs. We show that our method maintains the performance in detecting coding sequences.

Bone defects in revision knee arthroplasty are often located in load-bearing regions. The goal of this study was to determine whether a physiologic load could be used as an in situ osteogenic signal to the scaffolds filling the bone defects. In order to answer this question, we proposed a novel translation procedure having four steps: (1) determining the mechanical stimulus using finite element method, (2) designing an animal study to measure bone formation spatially and temporally using micro-CT imaging in the scaffold subjected to the estimated mechanical stimulus, (3) identifying bone formation parameters for the loaded and non-loaded cases appearing in a recently developed mathematical model for bone formation in the scaffold and (4) estimating the stiffness and the bone formation in the bone-scaffold construct. With this procedure, we estimated that after 3 years mechanical stimulation increases the bone volume fraction and the stiffness of scaffold by 1.5- and 2.7-fold, respectively, compared to a non-loaded situation.

Background and aims: Family-centred care is an expected standard in PICU and parent reported outcomes are rarely measured. The Dutch validated EMPATHIC questionnaire provides accurate measures of parental perceptions of family-centred care in PICU. A French version would provide an important resource for quality control and benchmarking with other PICUs. The study aimed to translate and to assess the French cultural adaptation of the EMPATHIC questionnaire. Methods: In September 2012, following approval from the developer, translation and cultural adaptation were performed using a structured method (Wild et al. 2005). This included forward-backward translation and reconciliation by an official translator, harmonization assessed by the research team, and cognitive debriefing with the target users' population. In this last step, a convenience sample of parents with PICU experience assessed the comprehensibility and cultural relevance of the 65-item French EMPATHIC questionnaire. The PICUs in Lausanne, Switzerland and Lille, France participated. Results: Seventeen parents, including 13 French native and 4 French as second language speakers, tested the cognitive equivalence and cultural relevance of the French EMPATHIC questionnaire. The mean agreement for comprehensibility of all 65 items reached 90.2%. Three items fell below the cut-off 80% agreement and were revised for inclusion in the final French version. Conclusions: The translation and the cultural adaptation permitted to highlight a few cultural differences that did not interfere with the main construct of the EMPATHIC questionnaire. Reliability and validity testing with a new sample of parents is needed to strengthen the psychometric properties of the French EMPATHIC questionnaire.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional APCs that have a role in the initiation of adaptive immune responses and tolerance. Among the tolerogenic mechanisms, the expression of the enzyme IDO1 represents an effective tool to generate T regulatory cells. In humans, different DC subsets express IDO1, but less is known about the IDO1-related enzyme IDO2. In this study, we found a different pattern of expression and regulation between IDO1 and IDO2 in human circulating DCs. At the protein level, IDO1 is expressed only in circulating myeloid DCs (mDCs) and is modulated by PGE2, whereas IDO2 is expressed in both mDCs and plasmacytoid DCs and is not modulated by PGE2. In healthy subjects, IDO1 expression requires the presence of PGE2 and needs continuous transcription and translation, whereas IDO2 expression is constitutive, independent from suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 activity. Conversely, in patients suffering from inflammatory arthritis, circulating DCs express both IDO1 and IDO2. At the functional level, both mDCs and plasmacytoid DCs generate T regulatory cells through an IDO1/IDO2-dependent mechanism. We conclude that, in humans, whereas IDO1 provides an additional mechanism of tolerance induced by proinflammatory mediators, IDO2 is stably expressed in steady-state conditions and may contribute to the homeostatic tolerogenic capacity of DCs.

In pancreatic beta-cells, the high Km glucose transporter GLUT2 catalyzes the first step in glucose-induced insulin secretion by glucose uptake. Expression of the transporter has been reported to be modulated by glucose either at the protein or mRNA levels. In this study we used the differentiated insulinoma cell line INS-1 which expresses high levels of GLUT2 and show that the expression of GLUT2 is regulated by glucose at the transcriptional level. By run-on transcription assays we showed that glucose induced GLUT2 gene transcription 3-4-fold in INS-1 cells which was paralleled by a 1.7-2.3-fold increase in cytoplasmic GLUT2 mRNA levels. To determine whether glucose regulatory sequences were present in the promoter region of GLUT2, we cloned and characterized a 1.4-kilobase region of mouse genomic DNA located 5' of the translation initiation site. By RNase protection assays and primer extension, we determined that multiple transcription initiation sites were present at positions -55, -64, and -115 from the first coding ATG and which were identified in liver, intestine, kidney, and beta-cells mRNAs. Plasmids were constructed with the mouse promoter region linked to the reporter gene chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT), and transiently and stably transfected in the INS-1 cells. Glucose induced a concentration-dependent increase in CAT activity which reached a maximum of 3.6-fold at 20 mM glucose. Similar CAT constructs made of the human GLUT2 promoter region and the CAT gene displayed the same glucose-dependent increase in transcriptional activity when transfected into INS-1 cells. Comparison of the mouse and human promoter regions revealed sequence identity restricted to a few stretches of sequences which suggests that the glucose responsive element(s) may be conserved in these common sequences.

The plasticity of mature oligodendrocytes was studied in aggregating brain cell cultures at the period of maximal expression of myelin marker proteins. The protein kinase C (PKC)-activating tumor promoters mezerein and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), but not the inactive phorbol ester analog 4alpha-PMA, caused a pronounced decrease of myelin basic protein (MBP) content and 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphohydrolase (CNP) activity. In contrast, myelin/oligodendrocyte protein (MOG) content was affected relatively little. Northern blot analyses showed a rapid reduction of MBP and PLP gene expression induced by mezerein, and both morphological and biochemical findings indicate a drastic loss of compact myelin. During the acute phase of demyelination, only a relatively small increase in cell death was perceptible by in situ end labeling and in situ nick translation. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) also reduced the levels of the oligodendroglial differentiation markers and enhanced the demyelinating effects of the tumor promoters. The present results suggest that PKC activation resulted in severe demyelination and partial loss of the oligodendrocyte-differentiated phenotype.

Summary of the thesis Glucose has been considered the major, if not the exclusive, energy substrate for the brain. But under certain conditions other substrates, namely monocarboxylates (lactate, pyruvate, and ketone bodies), can contribute significantly to satisfy brain energy demands. These monocarboxylates need to be transported across the blood brain barrier as well as out of astrocytes into the extracellular space and taken up into neurons. It has been shown that monocarboxylates are transported by a family of proton-linked transporters called monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs). In the central nervous system, MCT2 is the predominant neuronal form and little is known about the regulation of its expression. The neurotransmitter noradrenaline (NA) was shown previously to enhance the expression of MCT2 in cultured cortical neurons via a translational mechanism. Here, we demonstrate that two other substances, namely, insulin and IGF-1 enhance MCT2 protein expression in cultured mouse cortical neurons in a time- and concentrationdependent manner without affecting MCT2 mRNA levels. This result confirmed that MCT2 protein expression is translationally regulated and extend the observation to different types of neuroactive substances. Then we sought to determine by which signaling pathway(s) NA, insulin and IGF-1 can induce MCT2 protein expression. First, we observed by Western blot that all three substances cause activation of the MAP kinase ERK as well as the kinase Akt via their phosphorylation. Moreover, the mTOR/S6K pathway which is known to play an important role in translation initiation regulation was also strongly stimulated by all three substances. Second, we sought to determine the implication of these signaling pathways on the NA-, insulin- and IGF-1-induced enhancement of MCT2 protein expression and used specific inhibitors of these signaling pathways. We observed that the Pia kinase and mTOR inhibitors LY294002 and rapamycin respectively, strongly prevent the enhancement. of MCT2 expression caused by either NA, insulin ar IGF-1. In contrast, the MEK inhibitor PD98059 and the p38 MAP kinase inhibitor SB202190 had only a slight effect on the enhancement of MCT2 expression in all three cases. These results suggest that NA, insulin and IGF-1 regulate MCT2 protein expression by a common mechanism most likely involving the Akt/PKB pathway and translational activation via mTOR. In conclusion, considering the roles of NA, insulin and IGF-1 in synaptic plasticity, the tight translational regulation of MCT2 expression by these substances may represent a common mechanism through which supply of potentiated synapses with nonglucose energy substrates can be adapted to the level of activity. Résumé du travail de thèse Le glucose représente le substrat énergétique majeur pour le cerveau. Cependant, dans certaines conditions physiologiques ou pathologiques, le cerveau a la capacité d'utiliser des substrats énergétiques appartenant à la classe des monocarboxylates (lactate, pyruvate et corps cétoniques) afin de satisfaire ses besoins énergétiques. Ces monocarboxylates doivent être transportés à travers la barrière hématoencéphalique mais aussi hors des astrocytes vers l'espace extracellulaire puis re-captés par les neurones. Leur transport est assuré par une famille de transporteurs spécifiques, protons-dépendants, appelés transporteurs aux monocarboxylates (MCTs). Dans le système nerveux central, les neurones expriment principalement l'isoforme MCT2 mais peu d'informations sont disponibles concernant la régulation de son expression. Il a été montré que le neurotransmetteur noradrénaline (NA) augmente l'expression de MCT2 dans les cultures de neurones corticaux de souris par le biais d'un mécanisme de régulation traductionnel. La présente étude nous a permis de démontrer que deux autres substances, l'insuline et 17GF-1, induisent une augmentation de la protéine MCT2 dans ces mêmes cultures selon un décours temporel et une gamme de concentrations particulière. Etonnamment, aucun changement n'a été observé concernant les niveaux d'ARNm de MCT2. Ce résultat .confirme que la protéine MCT2 est régulée de manière traductionnelle et révèle que différentes substances neuro-actives peuvent réguler l'expression de MCT2. Compte tenu de ces observations, nous avons voulu déterminer par quelle(s) voie(s) de signalisation la NA, l'insuline et l'IGF-1 exercent leur effet sur l'expression de MCT2. Dans un premier temps, nous avons pu observer par Western blot que ces trois substances activent la MAP kinase ERK ainsi que la kinase Akt via leur phasphorylation. De plus, la voie mTOR/S6K, connue pour son implication dans la régulation de l'initiation de la traduction est aussi fortement activée par ces trois substances. Dans un second temps, nous avons voulu déterminer I implication de chacune de ces voies de signalisation dans l'augmentation de l'expression de la protéine MCT2 observée après stimulation à la NA, à l'insuline et à l'IGF-1. Pour ce faire, nous avons utilisé des inhibiteurs spécifiques de chacune de ces voies. (Vous avons observé que les inhibiteurs des voies PI3 kinase et mTOR (LY294002 et rapamycin respectivement), prévenaient fortement l'augmentation de l'expression de MCT2 induite par la NA, l'insuline ou (IGF-1. A l'inverse, les inhibitions de la MAP kinase .kinase MEK ainsi que de la MAP kinase p38 (par l'utilisation des inhibiteurs spécifiques PD98059 et SB202190 respectivement) n'ont eu qu'un léger effet dans ces mêmes conditions. Ces résultats suggèrent que la NA, 'l'insuline et I~GF-1 régulent l'expression de la protéine MCT2 par un mécanisme commun impliquant probablement la voie Akt/PKB et l'activation de la traduction via mTOR. En conclusion, considérant l'implication de la NA, de l'insuline et de I`IGF-1 dans la plasticité synaptique, le contrôle traductionnel étroit exercé par ces substances sur l'expression de MCT2 pourrait être un moyen d'alimenter en substrats énergétiques autres que le glucose les synapses activées et également d'adapter l'approvisionnement en substrats énergétiques au niveau d'activité. Résumé « grand public » Le cerveau est un organe qui réalise des tâches complexes nécessitant un apport important en énergie. La principale source d'énergie du cerveau est le glucose. Bien que le cerveau ne représente que 2% de la masse corporelle, il consomme à lui seul plus de 25% du glucose et 20% de l'oxygène provenant de la circulation sanguine. La nécessité d'un tel apport en énergie réside dans la nature -même du fonctionnement des milliards de neurones qui utilisent des signaux électriques et chimiques pour communiquer entre eux. Hormis l'utilisation massive du glucose comme source d'énergie, le cerveau est capable de consommer d'autres substrats énergétiques dans certaines conditions physiologiques ou pathologiques. Les monocarboxylates (lactate, pyruvate et corps cétoniques) font partie de ces autres sources d'énergie. Contrairement au glucose, les monocarboxylates ne diffusent pas facilement de la circulation sanguine vers les neurones. Afin de pouvoir être consommés par les neurones, ils doivent être transportés par un système adapté. Ce sont des transporteurs appelés transporteurs aux monocarboxylates ou MCT qui permettent le passage de ces substrats énergétiques du sang vers les neurones. Le but de ce travail de thèse a été de comprendre comment est régulée l'expression de MCT2, l'un de ces transporteurs exprimé spécifiquement à la surface des neurones. Cette étude nous a permis de mettre en évidence que le neurotransmetteur noradrénaline ainsi que les hormones insuline et IGF-1 (insulinlike growth factor-1) sont capables d'induire une augmentation d'expression de MCT2 à la surface des neurones en culture. Nous avons ensuite voulu déterminer par quels mécanismes de signalisation ces substances agissent sur l'expression de MCT2. Nous avons pu observer que la surexpression de la protéine MCT2 est due à une augmentation d'activité traductionnelle (la traduction étant une des étapes qui permet la synthèse des protéines) induite par le biais d'une voie de signalisation particulière. En conclusion, lorsque la noradrénaline, l'insuline ou 17GF-1 agissent sur les neurones, la traduction de la protéine MCT2 est activée et on observe une augmentation de l'expression de MCT2. Ce mécanisme pourrait permettre d'augmenter l'apport énergétique au niveau des neurones en augmentant le nombre de transporteurs pour les substrats énergétiques que sont les monocarboxylates. D'un point de vue physiologique, cette régulation d'expression pourrait jouer un rôle primordial dans des situations d'apprentissage et de mémorisation. Sur le plan pathologique, cela pourrait permettre de prévenir les dommages causes aux neurones dans certains cas d'atteintes cérébrales.

Objective: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) for use with ICD-9-CM data. Many countries have adopted ICD-10 for coding hospital diagnoses. We conducted this study to develop an internationally harmonized ICD-10 coding algorithm for the AHRQ PSIs. Methods: The AHRQ PSI Version 2.1 has been translated into ICD-10-AM (Australian Modification), and PSI Version 3.0a has been independently translated into ICD-10-GM (German Modification). We converted these two country-specific coding algorithms into ICD-10-WHO (World Health Organization version) and combined them to form one master list. Members of an international expert panel-including physicians, professional medical coders, disease classification specialists, health services researchers, epidemiologists, and users of the PSI-independently evaluated this master list and rated each code as either "include," "exclude," or "uncertain," following the AHRQ PSI definitions. After summarizing the independent rating results, we held a face-to-face meeting to discuss codes for which there was no unanimous consensus and newly proposed codes. A modified Delphi method was employed to generate a final ICD-10 WHO coding list. Results: Of 20 PSIs, 15 that were based mainly on diagnosis codes were selected for translation. At the meeting, panelists discussed 794 codes for which consensus had not been achieved and 2,541 additional codes that were proposed by individual panelists for consideration prior to the meeting. Three documents were generated: a PSI ICD-10-WHO version-coding list, a list of issues for consideration on certain AHRQ PSIs and ICD-9-CM codes, and a recommendation to WHO to improve specification of some disease classifications. Conclusion: An ICD-10-WHO PSI coding list has been developed and structured in a manner similar to the AHRQ manual. Although face validity of the list has been ensured through a rigorous expert panel assessment, its true validity and applicability should be assessed internationally.

Abstract :This article examines the interplay of text and image in The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1977), translated by Angela Carter and illustrated by Martin Ware, as a form of intersemiotic dialogue that sheds new light on Carter's work. It argues that Ware's highly original artwork based on the translation not only calls into question the association of fairy tales with children's literature (which still characterizes Carter's translation), but also captures an essential if heretofore neglected aspect of Carter's creative process, namely the dynamics between translating, illustrating and rewriting classic tales. Several elements from Ware's illustrations are indeed taken up and elaborated on in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (1979), the collection of "stories about fairy stories" that made Carter famous. These include visual details and strategies that she transposed to the realm of writing, giving rise to reflections on the relation between visuality and textuality.RésuméCet article considère l'interaction du texte et de l'image dans les contes de Perrault traduits par Angela Carter et illustrés par Martin Ware (The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault, 1977) comme une forme de dialogue intersémiotique particulièrement productif. Il démontre que les illustrations originales de Ware ne mettent pas seulement en question l'assimilation des contes à la littérature de jeunesse (qui est encore la perspective adoptée par la traductrice dans ce livre), mais permettent aussi de saisir un aspect essentiel bien que jusque là ignoré du procession de création dans l'oeuvre de Carter, à savoir la dynamique qui lie la traduction, l'illustration et la réécriture des contes classiques. Plusieurs éléments des illustrations de Ware sont ainsi repris et élaborés dans The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (1979), la collection de "stories about fairy stories" qui rendit Carter célèbre. La transposition de détails et de stratégies visuelles dans l'écriture donnent ainsi l'occasion de réflexions sur les rapports entre la visualité et la textualité.

Public opposition to antiracism laws-an expression of prejudice toward immigrants-is widespread in Switzerland as well as in other European countries. Using data from the European Social Survey 2002 (N = 1,711), the present study examined across Swiss municipalities individual and contextual predictors of opposition to such laws and of two well-established antecedents of prejudice: perceived threat and intergroup contact. The study extends multilevel research on immigration attitudes by investigating the role of the ideological climate prevailing in municipalities (conservative vs. progressive), in addition to structural features of municipalities. Controlling for individual-level determinants, stronger opposition to antiracism laws was found in more conservative municipalities, while the proportion of immigrants was positively related to intergroup contact. Furthermore, in conservative municipalities with a low proportion of immigrants, fewer intergroup contacts were reported. In line with prior research, intergroup contact decreased prejudiced policy stances through a reduction of perceived threat. Overall, this study highlights the need to include normative and ideological features of local contexts in the analysis of public reactions toward immigrants.

Contemporary thoracic and cardiovascular surgery uses extensive equipment and devices to enable its performance. As the specialties develop and new frontiers are crossed, the technology needs to advance in a parallel fashion. Strokes of genius or problem-solving brain-storming may generate great ideas, but the metamorphosis of an idea into a physical functioning tool requires a lot more than just a thinking process. A modern surgical device is the end-point of a sophisticated, complicated and potentially treacherous route, which incorporates new skills and knowledge acquisition. Processes including technology transfer, commercialisation, corporate and product development, intellectual property and regulatory routes all play pivotal roles in this voyage. Many good ideas may fall by the wayside for a multitude of reasons as they may not be marketable or may be badly marketed. In this article, we attempt to illuminate the components required in the process of surgical innovation, which we believe must remain in the remit of the modern-day thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon.
