This study aimed to compare two different maximal incremental tests with different time durations [a maximal incremental ramp test with a short time duration (8-12 min) (STest) and a maximal incremental test with a longer time duration (20-25 min) (LTest)] to investigate whether an LTest accurately assesses aerobic fitness in class II and III obese men. Twenty obese men (BMI≥35 kg.m-2) without secondary pathologies (mean±SE; 36.7±1.9 yr; 41.8±0.7 kg*m-2) completed an STest (warm-up: 40 W; increment: 20 W*min-1) and an LTest [warm-up: 20% of the peak power output (PPO) reached during the STest; increment: 10% PPO every 5 min until 70% PPO was reached or until the respiratory exchange ratio reached 1.0, followed by 15 W.min-1 until exhaustion] on a cycle-ergometer to assess the peak oxygen uptake [Formula: see text] and peak heart rate (HRpeak) of each test. There were no significant differences in [Formula: see text] (STest: 3.1±0.1 L*min-1; LTest: 3.0±0.1 L*min-1) and HRpeak (STest: 174±4 bpm; LTest: 173±4 bpm) between the two tests. Bland-Altman plot analyses showed good agreement and Pearson product-moment and intra-class correlation coefficients showed a strong correlation between [Formula: see text] (r=0.81 for both; p≤0.001) and HRpeak (r=0.95 for both; p≤0.001) during both tests. [Formula: see text] and HRpeak assessments were not compromised by test duration in class II and III obese men. Therefore, we suggest that the LTest is a feasible test that accurately assesses aerobic fitness and may allow for the exercise intensity prescription and individualization that will lead to improved therapeutic approaches in treating obesity and severe obesity.

PURPOSE: This study investigated maximal cardiometabolic response while running in a lower body positive pressure treadmill (antigravity treadmill (AG)), which reduces body weight (BW) and impact. The AG is used in rehabilitation of injuries but could have potential for high-speed running, if workload is maximally elevated. METHODS: Fourteen trained (nine male) runners (age 27 ± 5 yr; 10-km personal best, 38.1 ± 1.1 min) completed a treadmill incremental test (CON) to measure aerobic capacity and heart rate (V˙O2max and HRmax). They completed four identical tests (48 h apart, randomized order) on the AG at BW of 100%, 95%, 90%, and 85% (AG100 to AG85). Stride length and rate were measured at peak velocities (Vpeak). RESULTS: V˙O2max (mL·kg·min) was similar across all conditions (men: CON = 66.6 (3.0), AG100 = 65.6 (3.8), AG95 = 65.0 (5.4), AG90 = 65.6 (4.5), and AG85 = 65.0 (4.8); women: CON = 63.0 (4.6), AG100 = 61.4 (4.3), AG95 = 60.7 (4.8), AG90 = 61.4 (3.3), and AG85 = 62.8 (3.9)). Similar results were found for HRmax, except for AG85 in men and AG100 and AG90 in women, which were lower than CON. Vpeak (km·h) in men was 19.7 (0.9) in CON, which was lower than every other condition: AG100 = 21.0 (1.9) (P < 0.05), AG95 = 21.4 (1.8) (P < 0.01), AG90 = 22.3 (2.1) (P < 0.01), and AG85 = 22.6 (1.6) (P < 0.001). In women, Vpeak (km·h) was similar between CON (17.8 (1.1) ) and AG100 (19.3 (1.0)) but higher at AG95 = 19.5 (0.4) (P < 0.05), AG90 = 19.5 (0.8) (P < 0.05), and AG85 = 21.2 (0.9) (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The AG can be used at maximal exercise intensities at BW of 85% to 95%, reaching faster running speeds than normally feasible. The AG could be used for overspeed running programs at the highest metabolic response levels.

Introduction. Respiratory difficulties in athletes are common, especially in adolescents, even in the absence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Immaturity of the respiratory muscles coupling at high respiratory rates could be a potential mechanism. Whether respiratory muscle training (RMT) can positively influence it is yet unknown. Goal. We investigate the effects of RMT on ventilation and performance parameters in adolescent athletes and hypothesize that RMT will enhance respiratory capacity. Methods. 12 healthy subjects (8 male, 4 female, 17±0.5 years) from a sports/study high school class, competitively involved in various sports (minimum of 10 hours per week) underwent respiratory function testing, maximal minute ventilation (MMV) measurements and a maximal treadmill incremental test with VO2max and ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) determination. They then underwent one month of RMT (4 times/week) using a eucapnic hyperventilation device, with an incremental training program. The same tests were repeated after RMT. Results. Subjects completed 14.8 sessions of RMT, with an increase in total ventilation per session of 211±29% during training. Borg scale evaluation of the RMT session was unchanged or reduced in all subjects, despite an increase in total respiratory work. No changes (p>0.05) were observed pre/post RMT in VO2max (53.4±7.5 vs 51.6±7.7 ml/kg/min), VT2 (14.4±1.4 vs 14.0±1.1 km/h) or Speed max at end of test (16.1±1.7 vs 15.8±1.7 km/h). MVV increased by 9.2% (176.7±36.9 vs 192.9±32.6 l/min, p<0.001) and FVC by 3.3% (6.70±0.75 vs 4.85±0.76 litres, p<0.05). Subjective evaluation of respiratory sensations during exercise and daily living were also improved. Conclusions. RMT improves MMV and FVC in adolescent athletes, along with important subjective respiratory benefits, although no changes are seen in treadmill maximal performance tests and VO2max measurements. RMT can be easily performed in adolescent without side effects, with a potential for improvement in training capacity and overall well-being.

Acute exercise increases energy expenditure (EE) during exercise and post-exercise recovery [excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)] and therefore may be recommended as part of the multidisciplinary management of obesity. Moreover, chronic exercise (training) effectively promotes an increase in insulin sensitivity, which seems to be associated with increased fat oxidation rates (FORs). The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate 1) FORs and extra-muscular factors (hormones and plasma metabolites) that regulate fat metabolism during acute and chronic exercise; and 2) EPOC during acute post-exercise recovery in obese and severely obese men (class II and III). In the first study, we showed that obese and severely obese men present a lower exercise intensity (Fatmax) eliciting maximal fat oxidation and a lower reliance on fat oxidation at high, but not at low and moderate, exercise intensities compared to lean men. This was most likely related to an impaired muscular capacity to oxidize non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) rather than decreased plasma NEFA availability or a change in the hormonal milieu during exercise. In the second study, we developed an accurate maximal incremental test to correctly and simultaneously evaluate aerobic fitness and fat oxidation kinetics during exercise in this population. This test may be used for the prescription of an appropriate exercise training intensity. In the third study, we demonstrated that only 2 wk of exercise training [continuous training at Fatmax and adapted high-intensity interval training (HIIT)], matched with respect to mechanical work, may be effective to improve aerobic fitness, FORs during exercise and insulin sensitivity, which suggest that FORs might be rapidly improved and that adapted HIIT is feasible in this population. The increased FORs concomitant with the lack of changes in lipolysis during exercise suggest an improvement in the mismatching between NEFA availability and oxidation, highlighting the importance of muscular (oxidative capacity) rather than extra-muscular (hormones and plasma metabolites) factors in the regulation of fat metabolism after a training program. In the fourth study, we observed a positive correlation between EE during exercise and EPOC, suggesting that a chronic increase in the volume or intensity of exercise may increase EE during exercise and during recovery. This may have an impact in weight management in obesity. In conclusion, these findings might have practical implications for exercise training prescriptions in order to improve the therapeutic approaches in obesity and severe obesity. -- L'exercice aigu augmente la dépense énergétique (DE) pendant l'exercice et la récupération post-exercice [excès de consommation d'oxygène post-exercise (EPOC)] et peut être utilisé dans la gestion multidisciplinaire de l'obésité. Quant à l'exercice chronique (entraînement), il est efficace pour augmenter la sensibilité à l'insuline, ce qui semble être associé à une amélioration du débit d'oxydation lipidique (DOL). Le but de cette thèse est d'étudier 1) le DOL et les facteurs extra-musculaires (hormones et métabolites plasmatiques) qui régulent le métabolisme lipidique pendant l'exercice aigu et chronique et 2) l'EPOC lors de la récupération aiguë post-exercice chez des hommes obèses et sévèrement obèses (classe II et III). Dans la première étude nous avons montré que les hommes obèses et sévèrement obèses présentent une plus basse intensité d'exercice (Fatmax) correspondant au débit d'oxydation lipidique maximale et un plus bas DOL à hautes, mais pas à faibles et modérées, intensités d'exercice comparé aux sujets normo-poids, ce qui est probablement lié à une incapacité musculaire à oxyder les acides gras non-estérifiés (AGNE) plutôt qu'à une diminution de leur disponibilité ou à un changement du milieu hormonal pendant l'exercice. Dans la deuxième étude nous avons développé un test maximal incrémental pour évaluer simultanément l'aptitude physique aérobie et la cinétique d'oxydation des lipides pendant l'exercice chez cette population. Dans la troisième étude nous avons montré que seulement deux semaines d'entraînement (continu à Fatmax et intermittent à haute intensité), appariés par la charge de travail, sont efficaces pour améliorer l'aptitude physique aérobie, le DOL pendant l'exercice et la sensibilité à l'insuline, ce qui suggère que le DOL peut être rapidement amélioré chez cette population. Ceci, en absence de changements de la lipolyse pendant l'exercice, suggère une amélioration de la balance entre la disponibilité et l'oxydation des AGNE, ce qui souligne l'importance des facteurs musculaires (capacité oxydative) plutôt que extra-musculaires (hormones et métabolites plasmatiques) dans la régulation du métabolisme lipidique après un entraînement. Dans la quatrième étude nous avons observé une corrélation positive entre la DE pendant l'exercice et l'EPOC, ce qui suggère qu'une augmentation chronique du volume ou de l'intensité de l'exercice pourrait augmenter la DE lors de l'exercice et lors de la récupération post-exercice. Ceci pourrait avoir un impact sur la gestion du poids chez cette population. En conclusion, ces résultats pourraient avoir des implications pratiques lors de la prescription des entraînements dans le but d'améliorer les approches thérapeutiques de l'obésité et de l'obésité sévère.

PURPOSE: The origin of the slow component is not fully understood. The mechanical hypothesis is one of the potential factors, because an increase in external mechanical work with fatigue was previously reported for a constant velocity run. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a change in mechanical work could occur during the development of the VO2 slow component under the effect of fatigue. METHODS: Twelve regional-level competitive runners performed a square-wave transition, corresponding to 95% of the speed associated with peak VO2 obtained during an incremental test. The VO2 response was fit with a classical model including two exponential functions. A specific treadmill with three-dimensional force transducers was used to measure the ground reaction force. Kinetic work (W(kin)), potential work (W(pot)), external work (W(ext)), and an index of internal work (W(int)) per unit of distance were quantified continuously. RESULTS: During the slow component of VO2, a significant increase in W (P< 0.01), no change in W, and a significant decrease in W and W index (P< 0.05, P< 0.001, respectively) were observed. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that the slow component of VO2 did not result partly from a change in mechanical work under the effect of fatigue. Nevertheless, the decrease in stride frequency (P< 0.001) and contact time (P< 0.001) suggested an alternative mechanical explanation. The slow component during running may be due to the cost of generating force or to alterations in the storage and recoil of elastic energy, and not to the external mechanical work.

The purpose of this study was to compare O(2) uptake ((.)VO(2)) and muscle electromyography activity kinetics during moderate and severe exercise to test the hypothesis of progressive recruitment of fast-twitch fibers in the explanation of the VO(2) slow component. After an incremental test to exhaustion, 7 trained cyclists (mean +/- SD, 61.4 +/- 4.2 ml x min(-1) x kg(- 1)) performed several square-wave transitions for 6 min at moderate and severe intensities on a bicycle ergometer. The (.)VO(2) response and the electrical activity (i.e., median power frequency, MDF) of the quadriceps vastus lateralis and vastus medialis of both lower limbs were measured continuously during exercise. After 2 to 3 min of exercise onset, MDF values increased similarly during moderate and severe exercise for almost all muscles whereas a (.)VO(2) slow component occurred during severe exercise. There was no relationship between the increase of MDF values and the magnitude of the (.)VO(2) slow component during the severe exercise. These results suggest that the origin of the slow component may not be due to the progressive recruitment of fast-twitch fibers.

Inconsistencies about dynamic asymmetry between the on- and off-transient responses in VO2 are found in the literature. Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine VO2 on- and off-transients during moderate- and heavy-intensity cycling exercise in trained subjects. Ten men underwent an initial incremental test for the estimation of ventilatory threshold (VT) and, on different days, two bouts of square-wave exercise at moderate (<VT) and heavy (>VT) intensities. VO2 kinetics in exercise and recovery were better described by a single exponential model (<VT), or by a double exponential with two time delays (>VT). For moderate exercise, we found a symmetry of VO2 kinetics between the on- and off-transients (i.e., fundamental component), consistent with a system manifesting linear control dynamics. For heavy exercise, a slow component superimposed on the fundamental phase was expressed in both the exercise and recovery, with similar parameter estimates. But the on-transient values of the time constant were appreciably faster than the associated off-transient, and independent of the work rate imposed (<VT and >VT). Our results do not support a dynamically linear system model of VO2 during cycling exercise in the heavy-intensity domain.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that athletes having a slower oxygen uptake ( VO(2)) kinetics would benefit more, in terms of time spent near VO(2max), from an increase in the intensity of an intermittent running training (IT). After determination of VO(2max), vVO(2max) (i.e. the minimal velocity associated with VO(2max) in an incremental test) and the time to exhaustion sustained at vVO(2max) ( T(lim)), seven well-trained triathletes performed in random order two IT sessions. The two IT comprised 30-s work intervals at either 100% (IT(100%)) or 105% (IT(105%)) of vVO(2max) with 30-s recovery intervals at 50% of vVO(2max) between each repeat. The parameters of the VO(2) kinetics (td(1), tau(1), A(1), td(2), tau(2), A(2), i.e. time delay, time constant and amplitude of the primary phase and slow component, respectively) during the T(lim) test were modelled with two exponential functions. The highest VO(2) reached was significantly lower ( P<0.01) in IT(100%) run at 19.8 (0.9) km(.)h(-1) [66.2 (4.6) ml(.)min(-1.)kg(-1)] than in IT(105%) run at 20.8 (1.0) km(.)h(-1) [71.1 (4.9) ml(.)min(-1.)kg(-1)] or in the incremental test [71.2 (4.2) ml(.)min(-1.)kg(-1)]. The time sustained above 90% of VO(2max) in IT(105%) [338 (149) s] was significantly higher ( P<0.05) than in IT(100%) [168 (131) s]. The average T(lim) was 244 (39) s, tau(1) was 15.8 (5.9) s and td(2) was 96 (13) s. tau(1) was correlated with the difference in time spent above 90% of VO(2max) ( r=0.91; P<0.01) between IT(105%) and IT(100%). In conclusion, athletes with a slower VO(2) kinetics in a vVO(2max) constant-velocity test benefited more from the 5% rise of IT work intensity, exercising for longer above 90% of VO(2max) when the IT intensity was increased from 100 to 105% of vVO(2max).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether V˙O(2) kinetics and specifically, the time constant of transitions from rest to heavy (τ(p)H) and severe (τ(p)S) exercise intensities, are related to middle distance swimming performance. DESIGN: Fourteen highly trained male swimmers (mean ± SD: 20.5 ± 3.0 yr; 75.4 ± 12.4 kg; 1.80 ± 0.07 m) performed an discontinuous incremental test, as well as square wave transitions for heavy and severe swimming intensities, to determine V˙O(2) kinetics parameters using two exponential functions. METHODS: All the tests involved front-crawl swimming with breath-by-breath analysis using the Aquatrainer swimming snorkel. Endurance performance was recorded as the time taken to complete a 400 m freestyle swim within an official competition (T400), one month from the date of the other tests. RESULTS: T400 (Mean ± SD) (251.4 ± 12.4 s) was significantly correlated with τ(p)H (15.8 ± 4.8s; r=0.62; p=0.02) and τ(p)S (15.8 ± 4.7s; r=0.61; p=0.02). The best single predictor of 400 m freestyle time, out of the variables that were assessed, was the velocity at V˙O(2max)vV˙O(2max), which accounted for 80% of the variation in performance between swimmers. However, τ(p)H and V˙O(2max) were also found to influence the prediction of T400 when they were included in a regression model that involved respiratory parameters only. CONCLUSIONS: Faster kinetics during the primary phase of the V˙O(2) response is associated with better performance during middle-distance swimming. However, vV˙O(2max) appears to be a better predictor of T400.

Introduction An impaired ability to oxidize fat may be a factor in the obesity's aetiology (3). Moreover, the exercise intensity (Fatmax) eliciting the maximal fat oxidation rate (MFO) was lower in obese (O) compared with lean (L) individuals (4). However, difference in fat oxidation rate (FOR) during exercise between O and L remains equivocal and little is known about FORs during high intensities (>60% ) in O compared with L. This study aimed to characterize fat oxidation kinetics over a large range of intensities in L and O. Methods 12 healthy L [body mass index (BMI): 22.8±0.4] and 16 healthy O men (BMI: 38.9±1.4) performed submaximal incremental test (Incr) to determine whole-body fat oxidation kinetics using indirect calorimetry. After a 15-min resting period (Rest) and 10-min warm-up at 20% of maximal power output (MPO, determined by a maximal incremental test), the power output was increased by 7.5% MPO every 6-min until respiratory exchange ratio reached 1.0. Venous lactate and glucose and plasma concentration of epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), insulin and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) were assessed at each step. A mathematical model (SIN) (1), including three variables (dilatation, symmetry, translation), was used to characterize fat oxidation (normalized by fat-free mass) kinetics and to determine Fatmax and MFO. Results FOR at Rest and MFO were not significantly different between groups (p≥0.1). FORs were similar from 20-60% (p≥0.1) and significantly lower from 65-85% in O than in L (p≤0.04). Fatmax was significantly lower in O than in L (46.5±2.5 vs 56.7±1.9 % respectively; p=0.005). Fat oxidation kinetics was characterized by similar translation (p=0.2), significantly lower dilatation (p=0.001) and tended to a left-shift symmetry in O compared with L (p=0.09). Plasma E, insulin and NEFA were significantly higher in L compared to O (p≤0.04). There were no significant differences in glucose, lactate and plasma NE between groups (p≥0.2). Conclusion The study showed that O presented a lower Fatmax and a lower reliance on fat oxidation at high, but not at moderate, intensities. This may be linked to a: i) higher levels of insulin and lower E concentrations in O, which may induce blunted lipolysis; ii) higher percentage of type II and a lower percentage of type I fibres (5), and iii) decreased mitochondrial content (2), which may reduce FORs at high intensities and Fatmax. This study aimed to characterise both the [Formula: see text] kinetics within constant heavy-intensity swimming exercise, and to assess the relationships between [Formula: see text] kinetics and other parameters of aerobic fitness, in well-trained swimmers. On separate days, 21 male swimmers completed: (1) an incremental swimming test to determine their maximal oxygen uptake [Formula: see text], first ventilatory threshold (VT), and the velocity associated with [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] and (2) two square-wave transitions from rest to heavy-intensity exercise, to determine their [Formula: see text] kinetics. All the tests involved breath-by-breath analysis of freestyle swimming using a swimming snorkel. [Formula: see text] kinetics was modelled with two exponential functions. The mean values for the incremental test were 56.0 ± 6.0 ml min(-1) kg(-1), 1.45 ± 0.08 m s(-1); and 42.1 ± 5.7 ml min(-1) kg(-1) for [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and VT, respectively. For the square-wave transition, the time constant of the primary phase (τ(p)) averaged 17.3 ± 5.4 s and the relevant slow component (A'(sc)) averaged 4.8 ± 2.9 ml min(-1) kg(-1) [representing 8.9% of the end-exercise [Formula: see text] (%A'(sc))]. τ(p) was correlated with [Formula: see text] (r = -0.55, P = 0.01), but not with either [Formula: see text] (r = 0.05, ns) or VT (r = 0.14, ns). The %A'(sc) did not correlate with either [Formula: see text] (r = -0.14, ns) or [Formula: see text] (r = 0.06, ns), but was inversely related with VT (r = -0.61, P < 0.01). This study was the first to describe the [Formula: see text] kinetics in heavy-intensity swimming using specific swimming exercise and appropriate methods. As has been demonstrated in cycling, faster [Formula: see text] kinetics allow higher aerobic power outputs to be attained. The slow component seems to be reduced in swimmers with higher ventilatory thresholds.

This may be linked to a: i) higher levels of insulin and lower E concentrations in O, which may induce blunted lipolysis; ii) higher percentage of type II and a lower percentage of type I fibres (5), and iii) decreased mitochondrial content (2), which may reduce FORs at high intensities and Fatmax.
