Political Emotions: Civil Religion and Melodrama in Spielberg's Lincoln

This essay focuses on how Spielberg's film engages with and contributes to the myth of Lincoln as a super-natural figure, a saint more than a hero or great statesman, while anchoring his moral authority in the sentimental rhetoric of the domestic sphere. It is this use of the melodramatic mode, linking the familial space with the national through the trope of the victim-hero, which is the essay's main concern. With Tony Kushner, author of Angels in America, as scriptwriter, it is perhaps not surprising that melodrama is the operative mode in the film. One of the issues that emerge from this analysis is how the film updates melodrama for a contemporary audience in order to minimize what could be perceived as manipulative sentimental devices, observing for most of the film an aesthetic of relative sobriety and realism. In the last hour, and especially the final minutes of the film, melodramatic conventions are deployed in full force and infused with hagiographic iconography to produce a series of emotionally charged moments that create a perfect union of American Civil Religion and classical melodrama. The cornerstone of both cultural paradigms, as deployed in this film, is death: Lincoln's at the hands of an assassin, and the Civil War soldiers', poignantly depicted at key moments of the film. Finally, the essay shows how film melodrama as a genre weaves together the private and the public, the domestic with the national, the familial with the military, and links pathos to politics in a carefully choreographed narrative of sentimentalized mythopoesis.

Dyadic pulsations as a signature of sustainability in correspondence networks

In this paper, we introduce the concept of dyadic pulsations as a measure of sustainability in online discussion groups. Dyadic pulsations correspond to new communication exchanges occurring between two participants in a discussion group. A group that continuously integrates new participants in the on-going conversation is characterized by a steady dyadic pulsation rhythm. On the contrary, groups that either pursue close conversation or unilateral communication have no or very little dyadic pulsations. We show on two examples taken from Usenet discussion groups, that dyadic pulsations permit to anticipate future bursts in response delay time which are signs of group discussion collapses. We discuss ways of making this measure resilient to spam and other common algorithmic production that pollutes real discussions

VPS35 mutations in Parkinson disease.

The identification of genetic causes for Mendelian disorders has been based on the collection of multi-incident families, linkage analysis, and sequencing of genes in candidate intervals. This study describes the application of next-generation sequencing technologies to a Swiss kindred presenting with autosomal-dominant, late-onset Parkinson disease (PD). The family has tremor-predominant dopa-responsive parkinsonism with a mean onset of 50.6 ± 7.3 years. Exome analysis suggests that an aspartic-acid-to-asparagine mutation within vacuolar protein sorting 35 (VPS35 c.1858G>A; p.Asp620Asn) is the genetic determinant of disease. VPS35 is a central component of the retromer cargo-recognition complex, is critical for endosome-trans-golgi trafficking and membrane-protein recycling, and is evolutionarily highly conserved. VPS35 c.1858G>A was found in all affected members of the Swiss kindred and in three more families and one patient with sporadic PD, but it was not observed in 3,309 controls. Further sequencing of familial affected probands revealed only one other missense variant, VPS35 c.946C>T; (p.Pro316Ser), in a pedigree with one unaffected and two affected carriers, and thus the pathogenicity of this mutation remains uncertain. Retromer-mediated sorting and transport is best characterized for acid hydrolase receptors. However, the complex has many types of cargo and is involved in a diverse array of biologic pathways from developmental Wnt signaling to lysosome biogenesis. Our study implicates disruption of VPS35 and retromer-mediated trans-membrane protein sorting, rescue, and recycling in the neurodegenerative process leading to PD.

Subplate subpopulations in the hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rat brain

Subplate neurons are among the earliest born cells of the neocortex and play a fundamental role in cortical development, in particular in the formation of thalamocortical connections. Subplate abnormalities have been described in several neuropathological disorders including schizophrenia, autism and periventricular eukomalacia (Eastwood and Harrison, Schizophr Res, 79, 2005; McQuillen and Ferriero, Brain Pathol, 15, 2005). We have identified and confirmed a range of specific markers for murine subplate using a microarray based approach and found that different subplate subpopulations are characterized by distinct expression patterns of these genes (Hoerder-Suabedissen et al., Cereb Cortex, 19, 2009). In this current study, we are making use of these markers to investigate neuropathological changes of the subplate after cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the neonatal rat. First, we characterized the expression of a number of murine subplate markers in the postnatal rat using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. While several genes (Nurr1, Cplx3, Ctgf and Tmem163) presented very similar expression patterns as in the mouse, others (Ddc, MoxD1 and TRH) were completely absent in the rat cortex. This finding suggests important differences in the subplate populations of these two rodent species. In a neonatal rat model of HI, selective vulnerability of subplate has been suggested using BrdU birthdating methods (McQuillen et al., J Neurosci, 15, 2003). We hypothesized that certain subplate subpopulations could be more susceptible than others and analyzed the above subplate markers in a similar yet slightly milder HI model. Two-day old male rat pups underwent permanent occlusion of the right common carotid artery followed by a period of hypoxia (6% O2, 1.5h or 2h) and were analyzed six days later. Preliminary counts on three subplate subpopulations (Nurr1+, Cplx3+ and Ctgf+ cells, respectively) showed similar reductions in cell numbers for all three groups. In addition, we found that the majority of cases which show changes in the subplate also exhibit lesions in the deep cortical layers VI (identified by FoxP2 expression) and sometimes even layer V (revealed by Er81 immunoreactivity), which questions the selective susceptibility of subplate over other cortical layers under the conditions we used in our model. War and National Renewal: Civil Religion and Blood Sacrifice in American Culture

Wars are often associated with a rhetoric of renewal or new beginnings. This essay explores this claim through the lens of civil religion and a recent book by Carolyn Marvin and David Ingle, Blood Sacrifice and the Nation, which combines Emile Durkheim with Réné Girard in proposing that modern national cohesion depends on blood sacrifice. I unpack some of the paradoxes raised by this theory of national renewal in the context of 9/11, with a special focus on the sacred status of the flag and the special attention given to uniformed serviceman in the American body politic.
