ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Genetic, phenotypic and ecological divergence within a lineage is the result of past and ongoing evolutionary processes, which lead ultimately to diversification and speciation. Integrative analyses allow linking diversification to geological, climatic, and ecological events, and thus disentangling the relative importance of different evolutionary drivers in generating and maintaining current species richness. RESULTS: Here, we use phylogenetic, phenotypic, geographic, and environmental data to investigate diversification in the Spanish sand racer (Psammodromus hispanicus). Phylogenetic, molecular clock dating, and phenotypic analyses show that P. hispanicus consists of three lineages. One lineage from Western Spain diverged 8.3 (2.9-14.7) Mya from the ancestor of Psammodromus hispanicus edwardsianus and P. hispanicus hispanicus Central lineage. The latter diverged 4.8 (1.5-8.7) Mya. Molecular clock dating, together with population genetic analyses, indicate that the three lineages experienced northward range expansions from southern Iberian refugia during Pleistocene glacial periods. Ecological niche modelling shows that suitable habitat of the Western lineage and P. h. edwardsianus overlap over vast areas, but that a barrier may hinder dispersal and genetic mixing of populations of both lineages. P. h. hispanicus Central lineage inhabits an ecological niche that overlaps marginally with the other two lineages. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence for divergence in allopatry and niche conservatism between the Western lineage and the ancestor of P. h. edwardsianus and P. h. hispanicus Central lineage, whereas they suggest that niche divergence is involved in the origin of the latter two lineages. Both processes were temporally separated and may be responsible for the here documented genetic and phenotypic diversity of P. hispanicus. The temporal pattern is in line with those proposed for other animal lineages. It suggests that geographic isolation and vicariance played an important role in the early diversification of the group, and that lineage diversification was further amplified through ecological divergence.

Neuroendocrine differentiation has been described in rectal adenocarcinomas receiving neoadjuvant therapy prior to radical surgery, but its clinical relevance is controversial and no data are currently available in colorectal carcinoma metastases as compared to primary tumors. The presence of chromogranin A positive tumor cells was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry on surgical specimens from 54 primary colorectal carcinomas and their corresponding metastases, resected at diagnosis or during tumor progression. In 47 patients, tumor metastases were resected 1 month to 12 years after chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, while in the remaining seven patients no additional therapy after primary surgery was performed. In primary tumors, neuroendocrine differentiation was found in 12/54 cases (22.2%) as compared to 25/54 metastatic lesions (46.3%; p?=?0.01). The presence of neuroendocrine phenotype was not correlated with any clinical pathological parameter nor with a different proliferation index. However, patients having neuroendocrine cells in the primary tumor had a significantly shorter survival from the time of metastatic spread than those having not (33.3 vs. 55.5 months; p?=?0.04). In summary, our data show that colorectal carcinoma metastases contain a higher percentage of neuroendocrine differentiated cells as compared to their corresponding primaries, a finding possibly related to the influence of chemotherapy in neuroendocrine differentiation during colorectal carcinoma progression.

Lo studio ha valutato le emissioni atmosferiche in Regione Lombardia dallo smaltimento di rifiuti solidi in discariche controllate nell'anno 2001, proiettandone i quantitativi attesi a medio e lungo termine sulla base degli scenari di evoluzione più attendibili per le caratteristiche qualitative dei fifiuti, le modalità di smaltimento e le tecnologie adottabili per il controllo delle emissioni stesse. La valutazione è stata condotta acquisendo i dati base degli impianti attualmente presenti sul territorio lombardo per quanto riguarda i rifiuti smaltiti e le modalità di captazione e di combustione del biogas. Sono stati quindi definiti alcuni scenari alternativi ragionevolmente ipotizzabili nel medio e lungo periodo per lo smaltimento dei rifiuti, sulla base dell'evoluzione imposta dalla normativa nazionale e dagli strumenti della pianificazione regionale. L'individuazione delle migliori tecnologie applicabili per la captazione ed il trattamento del gas prodotto e per il controllo delle corrispondenti emissioni atmosferiche ha permesso di stimare l'evoluzione temporale, in corrispondenza dei diversi scenari, della produzione di gas e delle emissioni dei principali inquinanti di interesse. I risultati mostrano la possibilità di ottenere una consistente riduzione delle emissioni di metano, tale da comportare a scala regionale una corrispondente diminuzione del 2% delle emissioni complessive di C02 equivalente.
