PURPOSE: To determine the value of applying finger trap distraction during direct MR arthrography of the wrist to assess intrinsic ligament and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tears. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients were prospectively investigated by three-compartment wrist MR arthrography. Imaging was performed with 3-T scanners using a three-dimensional isotropic (0.4 mm) T1-weighted gradient-recalled echo sequence, with and without finger trap distraction (4 kg). In a blind and independent fashion, two musculoskeletal radiologists measured the width of the scapholunate (SL), lunotriquetral (LT) and ulna-TFC (UTFC) joint spaces. They evaluated the amount of contrast medium within these spaces using a four-point scale, and assessed SL, LT and TFCC tears, as well as the disruption of Gilula's carpal arcs. RESULTS: With finger trap distraction, both readers found a significant increase in width of the SL space (mean Δ = +0.1mm, p ≤ 0.040), and noticed more contrast medium therein (p ≤ 0.035). In contrast, the differences in width of the LT (mean Δ = +0.1 mm, p ≥ 0.057) and UTFC (mean Δ = 0mm, p ≥ 0.728) spaces, as well as the amount of contrast material within these spaces were not statistically significant (p = 0.607 and ≥ 0.157, respectively). Both readers detected more SL (Δ = +1, p = 0.157) and LT (Δ = +2, p = 0.223) tears, although statistical significance was not reached, and Gilula's carpal arcs were more frequently disrupted during finger trap distraction (Δ = +5, p = 0.025). CONCLUSION: The application of finger trap distraction during direct wrist MR arthrography may enhance both detection and characterisation of SL and LT ligament tears by widening the SL space and increasing the amount of contrast within the SL and LT joint spaces.

Each element is treated by a specialist in a different academic field in order to bring out a variety of approaches important to the discipline of the history of religion. Ether (akasa) was assigned to philosophy (Wilhelm Halbfass), wind to the history of religion (Bettina Bäumer), fire to classical philology (Peter Schreiner), water to a specialist on Indian medicine (Arion Rosu) and earth to anthropology (Gabriella Eichinger Ferro-Luzzi, specializing on Tamil literature). Les articles du présent volume, issus d'un symposium international ayant eu lieu à l'Université de Lausanne en juin 1998, présentent la perception des éléments comme base de recherche de l'étude des religions (Maya Burger), exemplifiée à l'aide des traditions hindoues. Chaque élément est traité par un spécialiste d'une discipline académique particulière dans le but de souligner la variété des approches nécessaire à la discipline d'histoire des religions. RESUME Dalí et le dynamisme des formes. L'élaboration de l'activité « paranoïaque-critique » dans le contexte socioculturel des années 1920-1930 Rendre à nouveau lisibles des textes dont on ne sait plus reconnaître les enjeux historiques et cognitifs, tel est le principal défi que cet ouvrage consacré aux écrits surréalistes de Dalí se propose de relever. La thèse fait ressortir l'image sans doute un peu déroutante d'un créateur stratège qui, assimilant de manière originale les savoirs les plus variés et dialoguant avec les intellectuels de son temps, propose au tournant des années 1930 une théorie du surréalisme novatrice, capable de redynamiser un groupe en pleine crise. L'étude, combinant des perspectives sociologiques et linguistiques, explore tout d'abord les écrits à caractère manifestaire et dessine les traits conceptuels et stylistiques qui font la singularité du projet de Dalí dans le cadre du mouvement surréaliste. S'inspirant des images-devinettes, de la production des fous, de l'interprétation des figures aux formes indéterminées, le Catalan conçoit une méthode créative et cognitive qui se fonde sur une pensée subconsciente active, schématisant et fertilisant automatiquement toute donnée perçue. Dans le domaine de la peinture, ce sont les formes des objets qui sont surdéterminées par les désirs subconscients du créateur et du spectateur et qui acquièrent ainsi des significations inattendues. Dans le domaine de l'écriture, ce sont les formes sonores et graphiques des mots ou encore l'ossature discursive qui, investies par les fantasmes de l'écrivain et du lecteur, génèrent une multitude d'images. A l'aune des modes de connaissance propres à l'époque, l'étude porte ensuite sur deux modèles de pensée - le paradigme photographique et l'imaginaire lié à la notion d'espace-temps développée par Einstein dans le cadre de la théorie de la relativité générale - qui sont en vogue pendant les années 1930 et que le peintre se réapproprie pour signifier la dimension « révélatrice » et « objective » de ses oeuvres. Premièrement, pour penser la méthode « paranoïaque-critique », le Catalan reprend et détourne les phases de production du cliché : loin de reproduire fidèlement le visible, le dispositif photographique dalinien permet de révéler les pensées subconscientes. Deuxièmement, dès 1933-1934, Dalí reformule le modèle de l'espace-temps de la relativité générale d'Einstein pour penser la façon dont une entité invisible (le fantasme) s'objective et se matérialise dans la réalité extérieure. L'étude du dynamisme psychique conféré par Dalí aux formes des objets, aux formes verbales et picturales permet finalement de mettre en lumière le foisonnement mais aussi l'extrême cohérence de l'univers surréaliste du Catalan, et de souligner la valeur de l'approche « paranoïaque-critique » de la réalité tant sur le plan de l'histoire culturelle que sur le plan de la connaissance.

This essay examines the role of melodrama in the American war film, focusing on three post-WWII examples. The main argument centers on the natural alliance between melodrama and militarism based on a shared intolerance for the notion of death as meaningless and in vain. Both melodrama and military ideology employ elaborate rhetorical and narrative strategies to enfold deaths into larger systems of meaning, such as the nation, or in more personal terms, as a rite of passage. One of the most common narrative devices present in the military melodrama is the death that converts survivors to the values of the virtuous victim. The essay examines the shared conventions and different strategies of the following three films: Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), Platoon (1986), and Top Gun (1986).

While regulation theory literature has made important contributions to the much-debated domain of globalisation by focusing on various aspects of post-Fordism, it has not yet fully engaged with the implications that can be drawn from critical approaches in international political economy. Recent studies have explored the transnational bases of new patterns and agents of change beyond states, firms and institutions traditionally involved in regulatory practices. Hybrid is often used as a default attribute reflecting lack of clear understanding of the breadth of this new type of influence and the opacity of the means involved. Drawing on the insights of philology and mythology, the paper argues that the notion of hybrid is relevant in elucidating the ontological ambiguity between imaginary and real aspects of globalisation. Furthermore, it specifies the categories involved in the analysis of emerging forms of hybrid regulation. Recent scholarship on globalisation tends to focus on the private-public nexus of the subjects involved in new forms of institutional arrangements and authority. Here, subjects, objects and space are analysed as joint issues. By focusing particularly on transformations affecting the role of the state, forms of competition, and their rescaling on a transnational basis, the concept of global hybrid is seen as complementary to the emancipation of regulation approaches from early emphasis on national levels of compromises.

The influence of public policy, property rights and contracts on the sustainability of residential buildings remains largely unknown. This research will use the analytical framework of the housing institutional regime to study the sustainability over time of the housing stock. We aim to produce an inventory of the housing institutional regime in Switzerland, a comparison with the German and Catalan regimes, and policy suggestions to achieve a better sustainability of the housing stock.

The aim was to assess whether physical activity decreases during adolescence, whether this decrease depends on the gender, whether physical activity is related to personal, family, and school factors, and whether it is associated to healthy behaviors in a sample of adolescents. Data were drawn from a survey carried out in 2001 among in-school Catalan adolescents aged 14-19 years. Subjects were divided in two groups: physical activity (N=4,185, 43.5% females) and no-physical activity (N=2,743; 68.9% females). Personal, family, school and lifestyles' variables were compared. Chi-square and Odds Ratio were used to compare qualitative variables and Student's t to compare quantitative variables. For the multivariate analysis, all statistically significant variables in the univariate analysis in each of the four groups of variables (plus age) were introduced in a non-conditioned multiple regression. Analysis was performed separately by gender. Physical activity was significantly more frequent among males and decreased with age. Globally, physically active youth perceived themselves as healthier and happier with their body image, they showed a better relationship with their parents, were better connected to school, and exhibited healthier lifestyles. As physical activity has important benefits on health, health professionals dealing with adolescents should encourage adolescents to keep practicing. This message must be specially directed to females.
