In cognition, common factors play a crucial role. For example, different types of intelligence are highly correlated, pointing to a common factor, which is often called g. One might expect that a similar common factor would also exist for vision. Surprisingly, no one in the field has addressed this issue. Here, we provide the first evidence that there is no common factor for vision. We tested 40 healthy students' performance in six basic visual paradigms: visual acuity, vernier discrimination, two visual backward masking paradigms, Gabor detection, and bisection discrimination. One might expect that performance levels on these tasks would be highly correlated because some individuals generally have better vision than others due to superior optics, better retinal or cortical processing, or enriched visual experience. However, only four out of 15 correlations were significant, two of which were nontrivial. These results cannot be explained by high intraobserver variability or ceiling effects because test-retest reliability was high and the variance in our student population is commensurate with that from other studies with well-sighted populations. Using a variety of tests (e.g., principal components analysis, Bayes theorem, test-retest reliability), we show the robustness of our null results. We suggest that neuroplasticity operates during everyday experience to generate marked individual differences. Our results apply only to the normally sighted population (i.e., restricted range sampling). For the entire population, including those with degenerate vision, we expect different results.

Was ist Arbeit?

Primary care physicians have to assess visual functions essential for driving when determining medical fitness to drive. However, it can be difficult to apply the legal requirements that are described in annex 1 of the ordinance regulating the admission to road traffic of 1976 (OAC) due to lack of unambiguousness. This article discusses those visual functions that have to be assessed namely visual acuity, the visual field and the detection of diplopia and it presents the appropriate methods for the primary care setting. Another objective is to discuss the relevance of road safety requirements on vision and to present the new Swiss requirements proposed for the future in comparison to some international recommendations.

We report a 14-year-old boy who presented with vision loss secondary to peripapillary neovascular membrane (PPNVM) as the initial and only symptom of papilledema secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension. After one lumbar puncture, visual acuity progressively recovered during the course of 1 week and further improved with the administration of oral acetazolamide. One year after the onset of vision loss, the patient's visual acuity had recovered to baseline measurements. The previously active PPNVM had involuted into a residual peripapillary fibrotic scar. To our knowledge, this is the first report of PPNVM complicating idiopathic intracranial hypertension in a child.

The authors report the case of a 75-year-old man presenting with an exceptionally large giant posttraumatic mucocele of the frontal sinus years after a gunshot blast to the head. The lesion had grown so extensively that the right eye had shrunk and calcified, resulting in total monocular blindness, a complication that has been reported only once. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a giant mucocele of such a large size is reported. We describe how the patient underwent surgical removal of this massive lesion, cranial base reconstruction, and a cosmetic oculoplastic procedure. The etiology, clinical presentation, and possible complications are reviewed, as well as the importance of a regular clinical follow-up and early surgical cure. Although the diagnosis and management of mucoceles are nowadays considered quite standard, the exceptional size of the lesion illustrated here emphasizes the destructive potential of such seemingly indolent lesions. Despite the benign histology of mucoceles, one should never underestimate their morbid potential or be lulled in delaying surgical cure. Large mucoceles should be removed as quickly as possible to prevent such unacceptable complications as permanent visual loss.
