The Mediterranean basin is considered a hotspot of biological diversity with a long history of modification of natural ecosystems by human activities, and is one of the regions that will face extensive changes in climate. For 181 terrestrial mammals (68% of all Mediterranean mammals), we used an ensemble forecasting approach to model the future (approx. 2100) potential distribution under climate change considering five climate change model outputs for two climate scenarios. Overall, a substantial number of Mediterranean mammals will be severely threatened by future climate change, particularly endemic species. Moreover, we found important changes in potential species richness owing to climate change, with some areas (e.g. montane region in central Italy) gaining species, while most of the region will be losing species (mainly Spain and North Africa). Existing protected areas (PAs) will probably be strongly influenced by climate change, with most PAs in Africa, the Middle East and Spain losing a substantial number of species, and those PAs gaining species (e.g. central Italy and southern France) will experience a substantial shift in species composition.

Project No. 369 (''Comparative Evolution of PeriTethyan Rift Basins'') of the International Geological Correlation Program produced a new palaeotectonic-palaeo-geographic atlas of the western PeriTethyan domain. The atlas contains more than two hundred new maps and documents grouped in nine regional sets (Iberia, Polish Trough, Eastern European and Scythian Platforms, Moesian Platform, Levant, Arabian Platform,, Northern Africa, NE Africa-NW Arabia, Libya-Pelagian Shelf plus a set of reconstructions for the whole western Tethys. The area, considered in the atlas stretches. from west to east, from the eastern Atlantic shores to the Urals and, from north to south, from the Baltic shield to equatorial Africa; the time span covered extends from the Late. Carboniferous to the Present. The dataset, resulting from an extensive cooperation between industrial and academic sources, is accessible interactively on a CD-ROM (Stampfli et al., 2001a) and includes legend, timetable, short explanatory notes, full references and additional supporting data. This dataset provides information on the development of the Tethyan realm in space and time. In particular, the relation between the Variscan and Cimmerian cycles in the Mediterranean realm is illustrated by numerous palaeogeographic and palaeotectonic maps.

New data on biostratigraphy, sedimentology and tectonics of the Russian Far Eastern region (Lower Amurian terrane) are presented. This study shows that sedimentary sequence of the terrane consists of interbedded Radiolaria-bearing siliceous and volcaniclastic sediments spanning an interval of over 90 million years. It is shown that accumulation of radiolarian deposits on an oceanic plate was associated with alkaline (intraplate) volcanism in the Jurassic, while the plate was drifting, and with some are volcanism during the Early Cretaceous. The younger siliceous rocks contain volcaniclastic material and indicate that the studied sequence approached the trench in the Early Cretaceous (Hauterivian-Barremian) and became accreted in the late Albian-early Cenomanian. We describe and illustrate radiolarian species extracted fi om 21 samples. A taxonomic list of 194 taxa and nine plates of Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Radiolaria are presented.

Gold in the quartz-pebble conglomerates of the late Archean Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa, is often intimately associated with carbonaceous matter of organic/biogenic origin which occurs in the form of stratiform carbon seams and paragenetically late bitumen nodules. Both carbon forms are believed to be formed by solidification of migrating hydrocarbons. This paper presents bulk and molecular chemical and stable carbon isotope data for the carbonaceous matter, all of which are used to provide a clue to the source of the hydrocarbons. These data are compared with those from intra-basinal shales and overlying dolostone of the Transvaal Supergroup. The delta C-13 values of the extracts from the Witwatersrand carbonaceous material show small differences (up to 2.4 parts per thousand) compared to the associated insoluble organic matter. This suggests that the auriferous rocks were stained by mobile hydrocarbons produced by thermal and oxidative alteration of indigenous bitumens, a contribution from hydrocarbons derived from intra-basinal Witwatersrand shales cannot be excluded. Individual aliphatic hydrocarbons of the various carbonaceous materials were subjected to compound specific isotope analysis using on-line gas chromatography/combustion/stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS). The limited variability of the molecular parameters and uniform delta C-13 values of individual n-alkanes (-31.1 +/- 1.7 parts per thousand) and isoprenoids (-30.7 +/- 1.1 parts per thousand) in the Witwatersrand samples exclude the mixing of oils from different sources. Carbonaceous matter in the dolostones shows distinctly different bulk and molecular isotope characteristics and thus cannot have been the source of the hydrocarbons in the Witwatersrand deposits. All the various forms of Witwatersrand carbon appear indigenous to the Witwatersrand Basin, and the differences between them are explained by variable, in general probably short (centimeter- to meter-scale) hydrocarbon migration during diagenesis and subsequent hydrothermal infiltration. Most corporate codes of conduct and multi-stakeholder sustainability standards guarantee workers' rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining, but many authors are sceptical about the concrete impact of codes and standards of this kind. In this paper we use Hancher and Moran's (1998) concept of 'regulatory space' to assess the potential of private transnational regulation to support the growth of trade union membership and collective bargaining relationships, drawing on some preliminary case study results from a project on the impact of the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) social conditionality on worker organization and social dialogue. One of the major effects of neoliberal economic and industrial policy has been the routine exclusion of workers' organizations from regulatory processes on the grounds that they introduce inappropriate 'political' motives into what ought to be technical decision-making processes. This, rather than any direct attack on their capacity to take action, is what seems best to explain the global decline in union influence (Cradden 2004; Howell 2007; Howe 2012). The evidence we present in the paper suggests that private labour regulation may under certain conditions contribute to a reversal of this tendency, re-establishing the legitimacy of workers' organizations within regulatory processes and by extension the legitimacy of their use of economic and social power. We argue that guarantees of freedom of association and bargaining rights within private regulation schemes are effective to the extent that they can be used by workers' organizations in support of a claim for access to the regulatory space within which the terms and conditions of the employment relationship are determined. Our case study evidence shows that certain trade unions in East Africa have indeed been able to use IFC and other private regulation schemes as levers to win recognition from employers and to establish collective bargaining relationships. Although they did not attempt to use formal procedures to make a claim for the enforcement of freedom of association rights on behalf of their members, the unions did use enterprises' adherence to private regulation schemes as a normative point of reference in argument and political exchange about worker representation. For these unions, the regulation was a useful addition to the range of arguments that they could deploy as means to justify their demand for recognition by employers. By contrast, the private regulation that helps workers' organizations to win access to regulatory processes does little to ensure that they are able to participate meaningfully, whether in terms of technical capacity or of their ability to mobilize social power as a counterweight to the economic power of employers. To the extent that our East African unions were able to make an impact on terms and conditions of employment via their participation in regulatory space it was solely on the basis of their own capacities and resources and the application of national labour law.

BACKGROUND: The vitamin D-endocrine system is thought to play a role in physiologic processes that range from mineral metabolism to immune function. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is the accepted biomarker for vitamin D status. Skin color is a key determinant of circulating 25(OH)D concentrations, and genes responsible for melanin content have been shown to be under strong evolutionary selection in populations living in temperate zones. Little is known about the effect of latitude on mean concentrations of 25(OH)D in dark-skinned populations. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the distribution of 25(OH)D and its subcomponents in 5 population samples of African origin from the United States, Jamaica, Ghana, South Africa, and the Seychelles. DESIGN: Participants were drawn from the Modeling of the Epidemiologic Transition Study, a cross-sectional observational study in 2500 adults, ages 25-45 y, enrolled between January 2010 and December 2011. Five hundred participants, ∼50% of whom were female, were enrolled in each of 5 study sites: Chicago, IL (latitude: 41°N); Kingston, Jamaica (17°N); Kumasi, Ghana (6°N); Victoria, Seychelles (4°S); and Cape Town, South Africa (34°S). All participants had an ancestry primarily of African origin; participants from the Seychelles trace their history to East Africa. RESULTS: A negative correlation between 25(OH)D and distance from the equator was observed across population samples. The frequency distribution of 25(OH)D in Ghana was almost perfectly normal (Gaussian), with progressively lower means and increasing skewness observed at higher latitudes. CONCLUSIONS: It is widely assumed that lighter skin color in populations outside the tropics resulted from positive selection, driven in part by the relation between sun exposure, skin melanin content, and 25(OH)D production. Our findings show that robust compensatory mechanisms exist that create tolerance for wide variation in circulating concentrations of 25(OH)D across populations, suggesting a more complex evolutionary relation between skin color and the vitamin D pathway. This article explores possible histories of plant exchanges and plant naming tied to the slave trade between East Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. The subsequent 'marronnage' of slaves on these islands - their escape from captivity, sometimes to live in mountain hideouts - continues to inspire cultural references. Inspired by the use of the adjective 'marron/marronne' for a number of plants on Reunion Island, we compile evidence of plant exchanges and plant naming from ecological records, historical accounts and the use of descriptive, emotive or symbolic vernacular names as clues for deepening our knowledge of historical societies and environments. The evidence from the Mascarenes opens a window into the role of the African diaspora in plant introduction, diffusion, domestication and cultivation. We document that maroons relied on a variety of wild, escaped and cultivated plants for their subsistence. We also highlight the role of marronnage in the popular and literary imaginary, with the result that many plants are named 'marron/marrone' in a metaphorical sense. Finally, we identify a few plants that may have been transported, cultivated, or encouraged in one way or another by maroons. Along the way, we reflect on the pitfalls and opportunities of such interdisciplinary work.

Clines in life history traits, presumably driven by spatially varying selection, are widespread. Major latitudinal clines have been observed, for example, in Drosophila melanogaster, an ancestrally tropical insect from Africa that has colonized temperate habitats on multiple continents. Yet, how geographic factors other than latitude, such as altitude or longitude, affect life history in this species remains poorly understood. Moreover, most previous work has been performed on derived European, American and Australian populations, but whether life history also varies predictably with geography in the ancestral Afro-tropical range has not been investigated systematically. Here, we have examined life history variation among populations of D. melanogaster from sub-Saharan Africa. Viability and reproductive diapause did not vary with geography, but body size increased with altitude, latitude and longitude. Early fecundity covaried positively with altitude and latitude, whereas lifespan showed the opposite trend. Examination of genetic variance-covariance matrices revealed geographic differentiation also in trade-off structure, and QST -FST analysis showed that life history differentiation among populations is likely shaped by selection. Together, our results suggest that geographic and/or climatic factors drive adaptive phenotypic differentiation among ancestral African populations and confirm the widely held notion that latitude and altitude represent parallel gradients.

Environmental histories of plant exchanges have largely centred on their eco- nomic importance in international trade and on their ecological and social impacts in the places where they were introduced. Yet few studies have at- tempted to examine how plants brought from elsewhere become incorporated over time into the regional cultures of material life and agricultural landscapes. This essay considers the theoretical and methodological problems in inves- tigating the environmental history, diversity and distribution of food plants transferred across the Indian Ocean over several millennia. It brings together concepts of creolisation, syncretism, and hybridity to outline a framework for understanding how biotic exchanges and diffusions have been translated into regional landscape histories through food traditions, ritual practices and articu- lation of cultural identity. We use the banana plant - which underwent early domestication across New Guinea, South-east Asia and peninsular India and reached East Africa roughly two thousand years ago - as an example for il- lustrating the diverse patterns of incorporation into the cultural symbolism, material life and regional landscapes of the Indian Ocean World. We show that this cultural evolutionary approach allows new historical insights to emerge and enriches ongoing debates regarding the antiquity of the plant's diffusion from South-east Asia to Africa.

Challenging the view of asymmetrical power relations between China and Africa, this thesis questions the "Chinese comparative advantages" (monolithic state power and economic advantages) of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Africa. It argues that the power dynamics between Chinese and African actors are dialectical and pluralistic, with localized social capital representing the true Chinese competitive advantage in Africa. Based on ethnographical fieldwork conducted in Ghana, this thesis shows that Chinese SOEs pursue their globalization in a double context - that of the deliberate "retreat" of the Chinese state, and more importantly, that of Ghanaian governance and society (characterized by political party patronage, extraversion dynamics, and worker agency). The trajectories of Chinese expatriates' expatriation/ social promotion and their SOEs' globalization/ localization are mutually influenced and reinforced. By cultivating local relationships and knowledge, a provincial Chinese SOE in Ghana can outperform a large Chinese central SOE, even if the latter has more support from the Chinese state. Moreover, the recent effort to build a "socially acceptable Chinese community" in Ghana has renewed the power dynamics between the Chinese state and the SOEs. All these observations provide for constructing a new perspective of Chinese SOEs in Africa - a "second-class" Chinese globalization - the SOEs may begin with few privileges, but promotion over time is possible. -- A contre pied des approches postulant des relations de pouvoir asymétriques entre la Chine et l'Afrique, cette thèse interroge les « avantages comparatifs chinois » (pouvoir de l'État monolithique et avantages économiques) des entreprises publiques chinoises (EPC) en Afrique. Elle soutient l'idée selon laquelle les dynamiques de pouvoir entre les acteurs chinois et africains est dialectique et pluraliste, et le capital social localisé étant le véritable avantage compétitif chinois en Afrique. S'appuyant sur un travail de terrain ethnographique au Ghana, cette thèse montre que les EPC poursuivent leur mondialisation dans un double contexte - celui de la «retraite» délibérée de l'État chinois, et, de façon plus importante, celui de la gouvernance et de la société ghanéennes (caractérisées par un clientélisme des partis politiques, une dynamique d'extraversion et le pouvoir de négociation des travailleurs). Les trajectoires d'expatriation / de promotion sociale des expatriés chinois et la mondialisation / localisation de leurs EPC s'influencent et se renforcent mutuellement. En cultivant des relations et des connaissances locales, une EPC provinciale au Ghana peut surpasser une grande EPC centrale, même si cette dernière reçoit plus de soutien de l'État chinois. En outre, les efforts récents visant à construire une «communauté chinoise socialement acceptable» au Ghana ont renouvelé la dynamique du pouvoir entre l'État chinois et les EPC. Ces observations permettent de construire une nouvelle perspective des EPC en Afrique - la globalisation chinoise de « deuxième classe » - les EPC peuvent débuter avec peu de privilèges, mais leur promotion reste possible avec le temps.

^Raduolarians constitute a good tool for contributing to the biostratigraphy of accreted terranes and in deep-sea sediment sequences. The use of radiolarians is also proven to be valuable as a palaeoceanographic indicator. The present study evaluates radiolarians in three different geological settings, in order to better constrain the age of the sites and to try to understand their palaeoenvironmental situation at different periods, particularly in the Caribbean-Central America area. On the Jarabacoa Block, in Central Dominican Republic, a hundred meters of siliceous mudstones (Pedro Brand section in the Tireo Group) was dated as Turonian- Coniancian in age using radiolarians. A 40Ar-39Ar whole rock age of 75.1±1.1 Ma (Campanian), obtained in a basalt dyke crosscutting the radiolarian bearing rocks, a consistent minimum age for the pelagic-hemipelagic Pedro Brand section. The Jarabacoa Block is considered as the most complete outcrop section of Pacific ocean crust overlain by a first Aptian-Albian phase of Caribbean Large Igneous Province-type activity (CLIP), followed by the development of a Cenomanian-Santonian intraoceanic arc, which is in turn overlain by a late Campanian-Maastrichtian CLIP-phase. The Tireo Group records an episode of pelagic to hemi-pelagic and intermediate to acidic arc-derived sedimentation, previous to the youngest magmatic phase of the CLIP. Thus, the section of Pedro Brand has been interpreted in this study as being part of the intraoceanic arc. In northern Venezuela, a greenish radiolarite section from Siquisique Ophiolite (basalts, gabbros and some associated cherts) in Guaparo Creek has been studied. In previous studies, the Ophiolite unit (Petacas Creek section) has been dated as Bajocian-Bathonian, based on ammonites present in interpillow sediments from basalt blocks. New dating of the present study concluded in an Aptian?-Albian-Cenomanian age for the Guaparo creek section (middle Cretaceous), based on radiolarian assemblage associated to basalts-gabbros rocks of the unit. Previous plagioclase 40Ar-39Ar ages from the Siquisuique Ophiolite may be slightly younger (94-90 Ma.) and may, therefore, represent younger dykes that intruded onto a well-developed sheeted dyke complex of the Siquisique. The geochemistry of these rocks and the palaeotectonic reconstruction of the Caribbean area during this period suggest that these rocks were derived from a mid-ocean ridge with an influence of deep mantle plume. The Siquisique Ophiolite most probably represents a fragment of the proto-Caribbean basin. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 344 drilled a transect across the convergent margin off Costa Rica. Two sites of this expedition were chosen for radiolarian biostratigraphy and palaeoceanographic studies. Both sites (U1381C and U1414A) are located in the incoming Cocos plate, in the eastern Equatorial Pacific. The succession of U1381C yields a Middle Miocene to Pleistocene age, and presents an important hiatus of approximately 10 Ma. The core of U1414A exposes a continuous sequence that deposited during Late Miocene to Pleistocene (radiolarian zones RN6-RN16). The ages were assigned based on radiolarians and correlated with nannofossil zonation and tephra 40Ar-39Ar datation. With those results, and considering the northward movement of the Cocos plate motion (about 7 cm/year), deduction is made that the sites U1381C and U1414A were initially deposited during the Miocene, several hundreds of kilometres from the current location, slightly south of the Equator. This suggests that the faunas of these sites have been subjected to different currents, first influenced by the cold tongue of the South Equatorial Current and followed by the warm Equatorial Countercurrent. At last, coastal upwelling influenced faunas of the Pleistocene. -- Les radiolaires sont considérés comme un outil utile à la biostratigraphie des terrains accrétés et des sédiments profonds. Leur utilité est aussi prouvée comme étant remarquable au niveau des reconstructions paléocéanographiques. La présente étude évalue l'importance et la présence des radiolaires de trois localités géologiquement différentes d'Amérique Centrale-Caraïbes, dans le but d'améliorer les model d'âges et de mieux comprendre la situation paléoenvironnementale à travers le temps. Dans le Bloque de Jarabacoa, au centre de la République Dominicaine, une section de cent mètres (section de Pedro Brand, Groupe de Tireo) a été datée comme faisant partie du Turonien-Santonien, en utilisant les radiolaires. Une datation 40Ar-39Ar sur roche totale de 75±1.1 Ma (Campanien) a été obtenu pour vin dyke traversant les sédiments riches en radiolaires, en cohérence avec l'âge minimum accordé à la section de Pedro Brand. Aux Caraïbes, le Bloque de Jarabacoa est considéré comme l'affleurement le plus complet présentant une succession de croûte océanique d'origine Pacifique recouverte d'une première phase d'activité volcanique de type CLIP (Caribbean Large Igneous Province) d'âge Aptien- Albien, de dépôts d'arc volcanique intra-océanique d'âge Cénomanien-Santonien, puis d'une seconde phase de type CLIP d'âge Campanien-Maastrichtien. Le Groupe de Tireo enregistre un épisode de dépôt pélagiques-hémipélagiques et d'arc volcanique, antérieur à la plus jeune phase de type CLIP. Cette étude place donc la formation de la section de Pedro Brand au moment du développement de l'arc intra-océanique. A Guaparo Creek (nord du Vénézuela), une section de radiolarite verdâtre faisant partie des ophiolites de Siquisique (basaltes, gabbros, cherts) a été étudiée. Dans des études précédentes, sur la localité de Petacas Creek, l'unité ophiolitique a été daté d'âge Bajocien- Bathonien (Jurassique) sur la base d'ammonites trouvées dans des sédiments intercalés entre des laves en coussins. Les nouvelles datations de notre étude, basées sur des assemblages à radiolaires de l'unité à basaltes-gabbros, donnent un âge Aptien?-Albien-Cénomanien (Crétacé moyen). Les âges de l'Ophiolite de Siquisique, précédement calculés par la méthode sur plagioclases, pourraient être légèrement plus jeune (94-90 Ma) et donc représenter des intrusions plus récentes de dykes dans le complexe filonien déjà bien dévelopé. La géochimie de ces roches magmatiques, ainsi que les reconstructions paléotectoniques de la zone Caraïbes durant cette période, suggèrent que ces formations sont dérivées d'une ride médio-océanique associée à l'influence d'un panache mantellique. L'ophiolite de Siquisique représente très probablement un fragment du bassin de proto¬Caraïbe. L'expédition 344 du programme IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) a eu lieu dans l'optique de forer et dresser une coupe de la marge convergente au large du Costa Rica. Deux sites de cette expédition ont été choisis pour les besoins des études de biostratigraphie et de reconstruction paléocéanographique. Ces deux sites (U1381C et U1414A) sont situés sur la plaque subductante de Cocos, dans la zone Pacifique est-équatoriale. La carotte U1381C expose une séquence s'étalant du Miocène moyen au Pléistocène, et présente un important hiatus d'environ 10 Ma. La carotte U1414A expose une séquence continue s'étalant du Miocène tardif au Pléistocène (zone à radiolaires RN6-RN16). Les âges ont été assignés sur la base des radiolaires et corrélés avec les zones à nanofossiles et les datations 40Ar-39Ar sur téphras. Avec ces résultats, et en considérant le mouvement nord de la plaque de Cocos (environ 7 cm/an), déduction est faite que les deux sites étaient initialement situés, au cours du Miocène, à plusieurs centaines de kilomètres de leur location actuelle, au sud de l'équateur. Cela suggère que les faunes de ces sites ont été sujettes à différents courants; premièrement influencées par la langue froide du SEC (South Equatorial Current), puis par les eaux chaudes du ECC (Equatorial Countercurrent). Pour terminer, les remontées d'eau côtières ont influencées les faunes Pléistocène.
