In this open, 30-day trial, the pharmacokinetics, safety and tolerability of a combination therapy of risperidone (4 or 6 mg/day)and fluoxetine (20mg/day from day 6) were evaluated in 11 psychotic inpatients. CYP2D6 genotyping revealed that 3 and 8 patients were poor metabolizers (PMs) and extensive metabolizers (EMs) of debrisoquine, respectively. The mean (+/- SD) AUC of risperidone increased from 83.1 +/- 46.8 ng.h/ml and 398.3 +/- 33.2 ng.h/ml (monotherapy) to 345.1 +/- 158.0 ng.h/ml (p < 0.05) and 514.0 +/- 144.2 ng.h/ml (p < 0.001) when coadministered with fluoxetine in EMs and PMs, respectively. The AUC of the active moiety (risperidone plus 9-hydroxy-risperidone) increased from 470.0 +/- 170.0 ng.h/ml to 663.0 +/- 243.3 ng.h/ml (p < 0.05)and from 576.3 +/- 19.6 ng.h/ml to 788.0 +/- 89.1 ng.h/ml (ns) in EMs and PMs, respectively. In EMs, the AUC of 9-hydroxy-risperidone remained similar (monotherapy vs. combination therapy: 386.8 +/- 153.0 ng.h/ml vs. 317.7 +/- 125.2 ng.h/ml, ns),whereas it increased in PMs (178.3 +/- 23.5 ng.h/ml vs. 274.0 +/- 55.1 ng.h/ml (p < 0.05)). Ten of the 11 patients showed a clinical improvement (reduction of 20% or more in total PANSS score and 70% on the mean MADRS score compared to baseline). The severity and incidence of extrapyramidal symptoms and adverse events did not significantly increase when fluoxetine was added.

Bacteria adapt and become quite rapidly selected to xenobiotic compounds introduced into the environment, mainly via the usage of the compound as carbon, energy or nitrogen source. Important examples include chlorobenzenes, the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, chloroalkanes, lindane, atrazine and nitroaromatic compounds. At the genomic level, such bacteria show evidence for genetic rearrangements mediated by transposable elements or general recombination, the result being most often an expansion of existing catabolic properties with additional gene modules from outside sources. DNA from outside sources appears to have been trapped and mobilized via conjugative plasmids and genomic islands. Genomic evidence further shows that most bacterial genomes contain considerable numbers of insertion elements, integrases, prophages and/or plasmids, which in general can contribute to their adaptation capacities.

The Mont-Mort metapelites are one of the best preserved relies of the Variscan unit in the Brianconnais basement. These micaschists crystallized during a poly-phase metamorphic cycle, under amphibolite facies conditions. Mineral parageneses and geothermobarometric calculations indicate a two-stage evolution. Stage (1) (550-600 degrees C and 5-8 kbar) is documented by assemblages of zoned garnet, staurolite, kyanite(?), biotite, muscovite, quartz and pla gioclase. Stage (2) (550-600 degrees C and 2 kbar) is illustrated by assemblages of andalusite, sillimanite, muscovite, biotite. This metamorphic evolution is characterized by a nearly isothermal decompression path, terminating with the formation of andalusite-bearing veins. U-Pb monazite dates at 330 Ma and Ar-40/Ar-39 muscovite dates at 290-310 Ma (without substantial evidence of argon resetting) point to Variscan metamorphism and yield an estimate of the time interval between the thermal peak and the retrogression stage within this part of the Brianconnais basement. Restoring the Brianconnais and other Alpine basement units within an existing geodynamic model of Cordillera construction and destruction, it is possible to understand better the transition from a medium pressure/high temperature regime (collision with a peak metamorphism around 330 Ma) to low-P/high-T conditions (decompression in an extensional regime) with high geothermal gradient, as recorded by the successive Variscan parageneses within the Mont-Mort metapelites.

Numerous rockfalls were detected in the Las Cuevas valley, Argentina, after the 27 February 2010 earthquake in Chile. Live rockfalls were observed during aftershocks of 11 March 2010. Many rockfall source areas coincide with known thrust fault and some areas presented a rockfall activity even after the tremors. Some rockfalls crossed the National Road 7 but no damages to houses or vehicles were reported. This study illustrates how the 27 February 2010 earthquake impacted on unstable slopes in a valley far from the earthquakes epicentre. It is an interesting addition to previous studies on landslides caused by earthquakes because of the high magnitude of the event and of its aftershocks.
