More than 60% of neuroendocrine tumours, also called carcinoids, are localised within the gastrointestinal tract. Small bowel neuroendocrine tumours have been diagnosed with increasing frequency over the past 35 years, being the second most frequent tumours of the small intestine. Ileal neuroendocrine tumours diagnosis is late because patients have non-specific symptoms. We have proposed to illustrate as an example the case of a patient, and on its basis, to make a brief review of the literature on small bowel neuroendocrine tumours, resuming several recent changes in the field, concerning classification criteria of these tumours and new recommendations and current advances in diagnosis and treatment. This patient came to our emergency department with a complete bowel obstruction, along with a 2-year history of peristaltic abdominal pain, vomits and diarrhoea episodes. During emergency laparotomy, an ileal stricture was observed, that showed to be a neuroendocrine tumour of the small bowel.

Many studies in continental areas have successfully used the oxygen isotope composition of fossil ostracod valves to reconstruct past hydrological conditions associated with large changes in climate. Yet, ostracods are known to crystallise their valves out of isotopic equilibrium for oxygen and they generally have higher 18O contents compared to inorganic calcite grown at equilibrium under the same condi- tions. A review of vital offsets determined for continental ostracods indicates that vital offsets might change from site to site, questioning a potential influence of environmental conditions on oxygen isotope fractionation in ostracods. Results from the literature suggest that pH has no influence on ostracod vital offset. A re-evaluation of results from Li and Liu (J Paleolimnol 43:111-120, 2010) suggests that salin- ity may influence oxygen isotope fractionation in ostracods, with lower vital offsets for higher salinities. Such a relationship was also observed for the vital offsets determined by Chivas et al. (The ostracoda- applications in quaternary research. American Geo- physical Union, Washington, DC, 2002). Yet, when results of all studies are compiled, the correlation between vital offsets and salinity is low while the correlation between vital offsets and host water Mg/Ca is higher, suggesting that ionic composition of water and/or relative abundance of major ions may also control oxygen isotope fractionation in ostracods. Lack of data on host water ionic composition for the different studies precludes more detailed examination at this stage. Further studies such as natural or laboratory cultures done under strictly controlled conditions are needed to better understand the potential influence of varying environmental condi- tions on oxygen isotope compositions of ostracod valves.

*This study reconstructs the phylogeography of Aegilops geniculata, an allotetraploid relative of wheat, to discuss the impact of past climate changes and recent human activities (e.g. the early expansion of agriculture) on the genetic diversity of ruderal plant species. *We combined chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequencing, analysed using statistical parsimony network, with nonhierarchical K-means clustering of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genotyping, to unravel patterns of genetic structure across the native range of Ae. geniculata. The AFLP dataset was further explored by measurement of the regional genetic diversity and the detection of isolation by distance patterns. *Both cpDNA and AFLP suggest an eastern Mediterranean origin of Ae. geniculata. Two lineages have spread independently over northern and southern Mediterranean areas. Northern populations show low genetic diversity but strong phylogeographical structure among the main peninsulas, indicating a major influence of glacial cycles. By contrast, low genetic structuring and a high genetic diversity are detected in southern Mediterranean populations. Finally, we highlight human-mediated dispersal resulting in substantial introgression between resident and migrant populations. *We have shown that the evolutionary trajectories of ruderal plants can be similar to those of wild species, but are interfered by human activities, promoting range expansions through increased long-distance dispersal and the creation of suitable habitats.

Blood glucose levels raise when the action of insulin decreases or when insulin is provided in inappropriate amounts. In type 1 diabetes (T1D) as well as in type 2 diabetes (T2D), the insulin secreting beta cells in the pancreas undergo controlled cell death also called apoptosis. Whereas in T1D, beta cells are killed by the immune system, in T2D, they are killed by several factors, among which are increased blood glucose levels, increased levels of harmful lipids or pro-inflammatory cytokines that are released by the dysfunctional fat tissue of obese people. Given the epidemic increase in the number of obese people throughout the world, the number of diabetic people (a majority of which are type 2 diabetes) is estimated to rise from 171 million affected people in the year 2000 to 366 million in 2030 explaining the absolute requirement for new therapies to fight the disease.Apoptosis is a very complex process whose deregulation leads to a wide range of diseases going from cancer to diabetes. Caspase 3 although known as a key molecule controlling apoptosis, has been shown to have various other functions. In the past few years, our laboratory has described a survival mechanism, that takes place at low caspase activity and that might explain how cells that activate their caspases for reasons other than apoptosis survive. In such conditions, caspase 3 cleaves another protein called RasGAP into two shorter proteins, one of which, called fragment N, protects cells from apoptosis. We decided to check whether fragment Ν could be used as a therapeutical tool in the context of diabetes inducing conditions. We thus derived a transgenic mouse line, called RIP-N, in which the expression of fragment Ν is restricted to beta cells. As expected, the beta cells of these mice were more resistant ex-vivo to cell death induced by diabetes inducing factors. We then showed that the RIP-N transgenic mice were resistant to streptozotocin induced diabetes, a mouse model mimicking type 1 diabetes, which correlated to fewer number of apoptotic beta cells in the pancreas of the transgenic mice compared to their controls. The RIP-N transgene also delayed overt diabetes development in the NOD background, a mouse model of autoimmune type 1 diabetes, and delayed the occurrence of obesity induced hyperglycemia in a mouse model of type 2-like diabetes. Interestingly, fragment Ν was mediating its protection by activating the protective Akt kinase, and by blocking the detrimental NFKB factor. Our future ability to activate the protective signals elicited by fragment Ν from the outside of cells or to derive cell permeable peptides bearing the protective properties of fragment Ν might condition our ability to use this protein as a therapeutic tool.3 RESUMELe diabète est une maladie associée à un excès de glucose plasmatique.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the validity of COOP charts in a general population sample, to examine whether illustrations contribute to instrument validity, and to establish general population norms. METHODS: A general population mail survey was conducted among 20-79 years old residents of the Swiss canton of Vaud. Participants were invited to complete COOP charts, the SF-36 Health Survey; they also provided data on health service use in the previous month. Two thirds of the respondents received standard COOP charts, the rest received charts without illustrations. RESULTS: Overall 1250 persons responded (54%). The presence of illustrations did not affect score distributions, except that the illustrated 'physical fitness' chart drew greater non-response (10 vs. 3%, p < 0.001). Validity tests were similar for illustrated and picture-less charts. Factor analysis yielded two principal components, corresponding to physical and mental health. Six COOP charts showed strong and nearly linear relationships with corresponding SF36 scores (all p < 0.001), demonstrating concurrent validity. Similarly, most COOP charts were associated with the use of medical services in the past month. Only the chart on 'social support' partly deviated from construct validity hypotheses. Population norms revealed a generally lower health status in women and an age-related decline in physical health. CONCLUSIONS: COOP charts can be used to assess the health status of a general population. Their validity is good, with the possible exception of the 'social support' chart. The illustrations do not affect the properties of this instrument.

This study assesses whether severity of physical partner aggression is associated with alcohol consumption at the time of the incident, and whether the relationship between drinking and aggression severity is the same for men and women and across different countries. National or large regional general population surveys were conducted in 13 countries as part of the GENACIS collaboration. Respondents described the most physically aggressive act done to them by a partner in the past 2 years, rated the severity of aggression on a scale of 1 to 10, and reported whether either partner had been drinking when the incident occurred. Severity ratings were significantly higher for incidents in which one or both partners had been drinking compared to incidents in which neither partner had been drinking. The relationship did not differ significantly for men and women or by country. We conclude that alcohol consumption may serve to potentiate violence when it occurs, and this pattern holds across a diverse set of cultures. Further research is needed that focuses explicitly on the nature of alcohol's contribution to intimate partner aggression. Prevention needs to address the possibility of enhanced dangers of intimate partner violence when the partners have been drinking and eliminate any systemic factors that permit alcohol to be used as an excuse. Clinical services for perpetrators and victims of partner violence need to address the role of drinking practices, including the dynamics and process of aggressive incidents that occur when one or both partners have been drinking.

.Abstract :Mound building red wood ants (species of the Formica rufa group) belong to one of the most studied groups of ants in Europe and have fundamental roles and positive effects in forested habitats of the northern hemisphere. In addition, they are considered among the most promising bioindicators of forest ecosystems. Because of their importance, these ants are protected by law in many European countries, including Switzerland. However, despite this protection, they are included on the red list of threatened species edited by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and on the red list of some particular countries like Switzerland. Because of their similar morphology and a high intraspecific variability, the morphological identification of these species can be quite complicated. In addition, they are sometimes able to hybridize or to form mixed colonies. Consequently, the taxonomy of this group of ants has been much debated during the past decades. Based on a phylogenetic study, today the group is considered to count six species in Europe: F. rufa, F. po/yctena, F. lugubris, F. paralugubris, F. aquilonia and F. pratensis. Nevertheless, the taxonomy of the group is often neglected mainly due to the lack of reliable and easy to use identification methods.Considering the importance of correct species assessment in conservation biology, in this study we want to disentangle the taxonomical difficulties within the Formica rufa group and to clarify the diversity of these protected ants, by using an integrative approach. We first analyzed the distribution of .the sibling species F. lugubris and F. paralugubris in the Italian Alps by collecting new samples on the field and by examining one of the major red wood ant collections, which is deposited at the University of Pavia, Italy. After that, we developed a molecular tool based on mitochondria) DNA, which provides a reliable and easy-to-use technique for the identification of F. lugubris and F. paralugubris. Afterwards, we extended the use of molecular markers for species identification to the whole F. rufa group and made a microsatellite analysis. Results confirm that molecular markers are consistent tools for species identification and that the six known species represent six different genetic pools. In addition, genetic data highlighted the existence of a new cryptic species in the Swiss Alps, called Formica lugubris-X.The presence of a new species can have a great influence on future conservation plans in favour of these protected ants and consequently for forested habitats. We therefore completed molecular data by behavioural (pupae recognition) and chemical analyses based on six pheromones of the entire F. rufa group. Both approaches are in accordance to genetic results and confirm that F. lugubris-X really represents a new cryptic species of red wood ant within the Swiss National Park (Eastern Swiss Alps). Results obtained in this study have a great importance in terms of biodiversity. Moreover, they provide important taxonomical information, reliable tools for species identifications and future perspectives for a consequent conservation of red wood ant species.

The Summer Olympic Games constitute the biggest concentration of human sports and activities in a particular place and time since 776 BCE, when the written history of the Olympic Games in Olympia began. Summer and Winter Olympic anti-doping laboratories, accredited by the International Olympic Committee in the past and the World Anti-Doping Agency in the present times, acquire worldwide interest to apply all new analytical advancements in the fight against doping in sports, hoping that this major human event will not become dirty by association with this negative phenomenon. This article summarizes the new analytical progresses, technologies and knowledge used by the Olympic laboratories, which for the vast majority of them are, eventually, incorporated into routine anti-doping analysis.

The fate of European arctic-alpine species during Pleistocene climatic oscillations still remains debated. Did these cold-adapted species invade much of the continental steppe or did they remain restricted to warmer slopes of inner mountain massifs? To examine this question, we investigated the phylogeography of Gentiana nivalis, a typical European arctic-alpine plant species. Genome fingerprinting analyses revealed that four genetic pools are actually unevenly distributed across the continent. One cluster covers almost all mountain massifs as well as northern areas, and thus coincides with a scenario of past distribution covering a large part of the European glacial steppe. In contrast, the three other lineages are strongly restricted spatially to western, central, and eastern Alps, respectively, thus arguing towards a scenario of in situ glacial survival. The coexistence of lineages with such contrasting demographic histories in Europe challenges our classical view of refugia and corroborates several hypotheses of biogeographers from the twentieth century.

AIMS: The objectives of this study were to analyse (a) the distribution of risky single-occasion drinking (RSOD) among 19-year-old men in Switzerland and (b) to show the percentage of all alcohol consumption in the form of RSOD. METHODS: The study was based on a census of Swiss francophone 19-year-old men consecutively reporting for processing. The study was conducted at Army Recruitment Center. The participants were 4116 recruits consecutively enrolling for mandatory army recruitment procedures between 23 January and 29 August in 2007. The measures were alcohol consumption measured in drinks of approximately 10 g of pure alcohol, number of drinking occasions with six or more drinks (RSOD) in the past 12 months and a retrospective 1 week drinking diary. RESULTS: 264 recruits were never seen by the research staff, 3536 of the remaining 3852 conscripts completed a questionnaire which showed that 7.2% abstained from alcohol and 75.5% of those drinking had an RSOD day at least monthly. The typical frequency of drinking was 1-3 days per week on weekends. The average quantity on weekends was about seven drinks, 69.3% of the total weekly consumption was in the form of RSOD days, and of all the alcohol consumed, 96.2% was by drinkers who had RSOD days at least once a month. CONCLUSION: Among young men, RSOD constitutes the norm. Prevention consequently must address the total population and not only high-risk drinkers.

Capillary electrophoresis has drawn considerable attention in the past few years, particularly in the field of chiral separations because of its high separation efficiency. However, its routine use in therapeutic drug monitoring is hampered by its low sensitivity due to a short optical path. We have developed a capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method using 2mM of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin as a chiral selector, which allows base-to-base separation of the enantiomers of mianserin (MIA), desmethylmianserin (DMIA), and 8-hydroxymianserin (OHMIA). Through the use of an on-column sample concentration step after liquid-liquid extraction from plasma and through the presence of an internal standard, the quantitation limits were found to be 5 ng/mL for each enantiomer of MIA and DMIA and 15 ng/mL for each enantiomer of OHMIA. To our knowledge, this is the first published CE method that allows its use for therapeutic monitoring of antidepressants due to its sensitivity down to the low nanogram range. The variability of the assays, as assessed by the coefficients of variation (CV) measured at two concentrations for each substance, ranged from 2 to 14% for the intraday (eight replicates) and from 5 to 14% for the interday (eight replicates) experiments. The deviations from the theoretical concentrations, which represent the accuracy of the method, were all within 12.5%. A linear response was obtained for all compounds within the range of concentrations used for the calibration curves (10-150 ng/mL for each enantiomer of MIA and DMIA and 20-300 ng/mL for each enantiomer of OHMIA). Good correlations were calculated between [(R) + (S)]-MIA and DMIA concentrations measured in plasma samples of 20 patients by a nonchiral gas chromatography method and CZE, and between the (R)- and (S)-concentrations of MIA and DMIA measured in plasma samples of 37 patients by a previously described chiral high-performance liquid chromatography method and CZE. Finally, no interference was noted from more than 20 other psychotropic drugs. Thus, this method, which is both sensitive and selective, can be routinely used for therapeutic monitoring of the enantiomers of MIA and its metabolites. It could be very useful due to the demonstrated interindividual variability of the stereoselective metabolism of MIA.

Inflammasomes are cytosolic multiprotein complexes that can proteolytically activate caspase-1. Activated caspase-1 is needed for the maturation and secretion of interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-18. In the past decade, there has been tremendous progress in our knowledge of inflammasome function and IL-1 signaling, mainly in cells of the innate immune system, such as monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells. Because nonimmune cells, including keratinocytes, synovial cells, or astrocytes, can form an interface between the body and the environment or a defined compartment (brain, joint), they are important guardians for the detection of danger signals and the consecutive initiation of an inflammatory response. They are present in anatomical compartments that are less accessible to myeloid cells and thus can fulfill tasks usually performed by residential macrophages. This review focuses on recent progress in our understanding of the processing and functional role of IL-1 in epithelial, mesenchymal, and neuronal cells and in conditions such as tissue repair.

In the past two decades, the iconography of victimhood mobilized by child rights advocates has changed significantly. In particular, the child victim of violence has replaced the street child as the dominant icon on the international agenda. Based on data from more than 300 documents produced between 1989 and 2009 and interviews with leading advocates, this article explores the diverging trajectories of iconic child victims. It follows the traces of the successive translations of the idea of âeuro~stolen childhoodâeuro? and locates them against the backdrop of evolutions in the childrenâeuro?s rights field.

An old erg covers the northern part of the Lake Chad basin. This dune landform allowed the formation of many inter- dune ponds of various sizes. Still present in certain zones where the groundwater level is high (e.g. Kanem, southern Manga), these ponds formed in the past a vast network of lacustrine microsystems, as shown by the nature and the dis- tribution of their deposits. In the Manga, these interdune deposits represent the main sedimentary records of the Holo- cene environmental succession. Their paleobiological (pollens, diatoms, ostracods) and geochemical (δ18O, δ13C, Sr/ Ca) contents are often the basis for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. On the other hand, their sedimentological char- acters are rarely exploited. This study of palustro-lacustrine deposits of the Holocene N'Guigmi lake (northern bank of the Lake Chad; Niger) is based on the relationships between the sedimentological features and the climato-hydrological fluctuations. The mineralogical parameters (e.g. calcium carbonate content, clay mineralogy) and the nature of autoch- thonous mineralization (i.e. amorphous silica, clays, calcium carbonates) can be interpreted using a straightforward hy- dro-sedimentary model. Established to explain the geochemical dynamics of Lake Chad, this model is based on a bio- geochemical cycle of the main elements (i.e. silicium, calcium) directly controlled by the local hydrological balance (i.e. rainfall/evaporation ratio). All these results show that a detailed study of sedimentological features can provide impor- tant paleohydrological informations about the regional aridification since ca 6500 14C BP.

Abstract The southern Central American volcanic front lies on the SW edge of the Caribbean Plate, inboard of the subducting Cocos and Nazca Plates. It is one of the most studied intra-oceanic convergent margins around the world, which is generally interpreted to have developed in the late Cretaceous along an oceanic plateau (the Caribbean Large Igneous Province or CLIP) and to be currently undergoing a regime of subduction erosion. In the last decades a particular effort has been made to understand subduction-related processes on the basis of geophysical and geochemical studies. In southern Costa Rica and western Panama accretionary complexes and structures at the base of the volcanic front have been exposed in response to subduction of aseismic ridges and transforms. Onland exposures are located as close as to 15 km from the trench and provide a unique opportunity to better understand some of the processes occurring along the subduction zone. We provide new constraints on the origins of these exposures by integrating a comprehensive field work, new geochemical, sedimentary and paleontological data, as well as structural observations based on remote imaging. A new Campanian to Eocene tectonostratigraphy is defined for the forearc area located between the Osa Peninsula (Costa Rica) and the Azuero Peninsula (Panama). Our results show that the outer margin is composed of a complicated arrangement of igneous complexes and overlapping sedimentary sequences that essentially comprise an arc basement, primitive island-arc rocks, accreted seamount fragments and accretionary mélanges. Evidences are provided for the development of the southern Central American arc on the top an oceanic plateau. The subduction initiation along the SW edge of the Caribbean Plate occurred in the Campanian and led to formation of primitive island-arc rocks characterized by unusual geochemical affinities broadly intermediate between plateau and arc affinities. The arc was mature in the Maastrichtian and was forming a predominantly continuous landbridge between the North and South Americas. This allowed migration of terrestrial fauna between the Americas and may have contributed to the Cretaceous-Tertiary crisis by limiting trans-equatorial oceanic currents between the Pacific and the Atlantic. Several units composed of accreted seamount fragments are defined. The nature of the units and their structural arrangement provide new constraints on the modes of accretion of seamounts/oceanic islands and on the evolution of the margin since subduction initiation. Between the late Cretaceous and the middle Eocene, the margin recorded several local episodes of seamount accretion alternating with tectonic erosion. In the middle Eocene a regional tectonic event may have triggered strong coupling between the overriding and subducting plates, leading to higher rates of seamount accretion. During this period the situation along the margin was very similar to the present and characterized by subducting seamounts and absence of sediment accretion. The geological record shows that it is not possible to ascribe an overall erosive or accretionary nature to the margin in the past and, by analogy, today, because (1) accretionary and erosive processes exhibit significant lateral and temporal variations and (2) it is impossible to estimate the exact amount of material tectonically eroded from the margin since subduction initiation. In southern Costa Rica, accreted seamount fragments point toward a plume-ridge interaction in the Pacific in the late Cretaceous/Paleocene. This occurrence of accreted seamount fragments and morphology of the Pacific Ocean floor is indicative of the formation of the Cocos-Nazca spreading system at least ~40 Ma prior to the age proposed in current tectonic models. In Panama, we identified a remarkably-well preserved early Eocene oceanic island that accreted in the middle Eocene. The accretion probably occurred at very shallow depth by detachment of the island in the trench and led to an exceptional preservation of the volcanic structures. Exposures of both deep and superficial parts of the volcanic edifice have been studied, from the submarine-shield to subaerial-postshield stages. The stratigraphy allowed us to distinguish lavas produced during the submarine and subaerial stages. The lava compositions likely define a progressive diminution of source melting and a decrease in the temperature of erupted melts in the latest stages of volcanic activity. We interpret these changes to primarily reflect the progressive migration of the oceanic island out of the melting region or hotspot.
