In line with educational issues involved in emergent literacy practices in preschool, in particular those concerning comprehension processes, this paper focuses on picture-based narrative comprehension during an interactive reading session of a wordless picture book, involving a group of children aged three and their teacher. Children are asked to make inferences about the meaning and outcome of the story, a procedure which gradually elicits their responses on how events link together, thus enhancing their capacity to use prior and implicit knowledge to build the story meaning. Moreover, this study highlights the importance of interaction for developing comprehension. Data collected was analysed following didactic microgenesis, an analytical approach showing that knowledge built during interaction depends on the joint construction of a zone of common meaning by which teacher and children try to adjust to each other. In order to help the process of merging different meanings of the story built online, a text written by researchers, following the narrative structure of the story, was read by the teacher after the picture-based reading. This led us to examine through interactional analysis which semiotic cues were used during recall on the following day, as an additional measure of knowledge construction.

Continuous field mapping has to address two conflicting remote sensing requirements when collecting training data. On one hand, continuous field mapping trains fractional land cover and thus favours mixed training pixels. On the other hand, the spectral signature has to be preferably distinct and thus favours pure training pixels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of training data distribution along fractional and spectral gradients on the resulting mapping performance. We derived four continuous fields (tree, shrubherb, bare, water) from aerial photographs as response variables and processed corresponding spectral signatures from multitemporal Landsat 5 TM data as explanatory variables. Subsequent controlled experiments along fractional cover gradients were then based on generalised linear models. Resulting fractional and spectral distribution differed between single continuous fields, but could be satisfactorily trained and mapped. Pixels with fractional or without respective cover were much more critical than pure full cover pixels. Error distribution of continuous field models was non-uniform with respect to horizontal and vertical spatial distribution of target fields. We conclude that a sampling for continuous field training data should be based on extent and densities in the fractional and spectral, rather than the real spatial space. Consequently, adequate training plots are most probably not systematically distributed in the real spatial space, but cover the gradient and covariate structure of the fractional and spectral space well. PURPOSE: To report neovascular glaucoma after proton-beam radiotherapy of an adenocarcinoma of the pigmented ciliary epithelium and its successful treatment by iridocyclectomy. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 65-year-old man developed neovascular glaucoma 10 months after proton-beam radiotherapy of a small pigmented iridociliary tumour with a clinical differential diagnosis of uveal melanoma or adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of 'toxic tumour syndrome' was made, and iridocyclectomy performed. RESULTS: Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the specimen diagnosed an adenocarcinoma of the pigmented ciliary epithelium, with the presence of mitoses suggesting residual viable tumour cells. The rubeosis regressed, with normalization of the intraocular pressure. Phacoemulsification for radiation-induced cataract restored VA to 6/9, which was better than that recorded at initial referral, the patient having longstanding cellophane maculopathy. CONCLUSIONS: Neovascular glaucoma after radiotherapy of a small, pigmented, ciliary body tumour raises the possibility of adenocarcinoma. This 'toxic tumour syndrome' may respond to iridocyclectomy of the irradiated tumour.

-- The study presented in this book for the first time in Switzerland offers a broad empirical and sociological perspective on local religious organizations. From this perspective, religion appears first, as already observed by Weber and Durkheim, through communities regardless of their various profiles. In Switzerland, 5,734 parishes and religious groups have been identified by a national census in 2008. The book underlines the institutional salience of historical churches (Reformed and Roman Catholic) but also the emerging religious plurality, particularly in urban areas. This study sheds a new light upon the effects of secularization (lower limbs and practice) and pluralisation (diversification of religious denominations and traditions) in the organizational field. The analysis of differences and similarities between religious traditions shows a social positioning of the local groups according to the statutes acquired in history. The classical theories − e.g. about the relationship between social status of members and membership groups, types of religious authorities or differences between Church and Sect − are revisited, clarified or reformulated based on an original and representative quantitative data of the Swiss religious field.

The paper argues that the formulation of quantum mechanics proposed by Ghirardi, Rimini and Weber (GRW) is a serious candidate for being a fundamental physical theory and explores its ontological commitments from this perspective. In particular, we propose to conceive of spatial superpositions of non-massless microsystems as dispositions or powers, more precisely propensities, to generate spontaneous localizations. We set out five reasons for this view, namely that (1) it provides for a clear sense in which quantum systems in entangled states possess properties even in the absence of definite values; (2) it vindicates objective, single-case probabilities; (3) it yields a clear transition from quantum to classical properties; (4) it enables to draw a clear distinction between purely mathematical and physical structures, and (5) it grounds the arrow of time in the time-irreversible manifestation of the propensities to localize.

Abstract One of the most important issues in molecular biology is to understand regulatory mechanisms that control gene expression. Gene expression is often regulated by proteins, called transcription factors which bind to short (5 to 20 base pairs),degenerate segments of DNA. Experimental efforts towards understanding the sequence specificity of transcription factors is laborious and expensive, but can be substantially accelerated with the use of computational predictions. This thesis describes the use of algorithms and resources for transcriptionfactor binding site analysis in addressing quantitative modelling, where probabilitic models are built to represent binding properties of a transcription factor and can be used to find new functional binding sites in genomes. Initially, an open-access database(HTPSELEX) was created, holding high quality binding sequences for two eukaryotic families of transcription factors namely CTF/NF1 and LEFT/TCF. The binding sequences were elucidated using a recently described experimental procedure called HTP-SELEX, that allows generation of large number (> 1000) of binding sites using mass sequencing technology. For each HTP-SELEX experiments we also provide accurate primary experimental information about the protein material used, details of the wet lab protocol, an archive of sequencing trace files, and assembled clone sequences of binding sequences. The database also offers reasonably large SELEX libraries obtained with conventional low-throughput protocols. The database is available at http://wwwisrec.isb-sib.ch/htpselex/ and and ftp://ftp.isrec.isb-sib.ch/pub/databases/htpselex. The Expectation-Maximisation(EM) algorithm is one the frequently used methods to estimate probabilistic models to represent the sequence specificity of transcription factors. We present computer simulations in order to estimate the precision of EM estimated models as a function of data set parameters(like length of initial sequences, number of initial sequences, percentage of nonbinding sequences). We observed a remarkable robustness of the EM algorithm with regard to length of training sequences and the degree of contamination. The HTPSELEX database and the benchmarked results of the EM algorithm formed part of the foundation for the subsequent project, where a statistical framework called hidden Markov model has been developed to represent sequence specificity of the transcription factors CTF/NF1 and LEF1/TCF using the HTP-SELEX experiment data. The hidden Markov model framework is capable of both predicting and classifying CTF/NF1 and LEF1/TCF binding sites. A covariance analysis of the binding sites revealed non-independent base preferences at different nucleotide positions, providing insight into the binding mechanism. We next tested the LEF1/TCF model by computing binding scores for a set of LEF1/TCF binding sequences for which relative affinities were determined experimentally using non-linear regression. The predicted and experimentally determined binding affinities were in good correlation.

Abstract: This thesis is dedicated to the life course analysis of alumni from one of the most prestigious French Grandes écoles (the Ecoles Normales Supérieures of Fontenay-aux- roses, Saint-Cloud and Lyon - classes of 1981.-1987). Through a longitudinal perspective, it aims to analyze how family, educational, professional and conjugal socialization processes combine to shape the life course of this particular group of graduates. The main goal of this research is to question the widespread belief that the French Grandes Ecoles guarantee automatic access to the very top of the professional and social hierarchy for all of their graduates. Based on a mixed methods research design (archive data, a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews), this thesis shows that, according to social origin and gender, ENS graduates actually adopt a diverse range of professional careers. It show how, in a socio-historical context characterized by a general increase in educational levels, any analysis of social inequalities should combine two levels of analysis: the social conditions of access to educational credentials, on the one hand, and the labor market value of formal qualifications, on the other hand. Our results suggest that the combined analysis of these two processes provide useful insight into the increasingly complex processes of social reproduction - and suggest fruitful perspectives for reducing some sources of inequality.

PURPOSE: To investigate the functional outcome of eyes with neovascular AMD (nAMD) and subretinal fluid (SRF) refractory to treatment with ranibizumab. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of consecutive treatment-refractory SRF in nAMD despite monthly ranibizumab injections during 12 months or more. Data were evaluated for baseline characteristics, location of the refractory SRF, mean visual acuity (VA) change, number of injections, and timepoint of first complete disappearance of SRF. RESULTS: Forty-five eyes in 44 patients (mean age of 76 years) were included. The mean follow-up was 32.4 months (range 12-73 months). The mean number of injections was 11.6 in the first year and 27.5 over follow-up. The refractory SRF was located subfoveally in 66.7 %. In 12 eyes (26.7 %), complete absorption of SRF was found after a mean of 22.6 months (range, 13-41 months). Mean VA increased by 10.4, 8.2, and 8.6 letters by month 12, 24, and 36, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Neovascular AMD with SRF refractory to monthly retreatment with ranibizumab may still allow good and maintained visual improvement, even if the fluid is located subfoveally. SRF may progressively absorb under continuous monthly treatment. The necessity to treat refractory SRF with monthly injections could be questioned and would need future investigations.

PURPOSE: To report the clinico-pathological features of solitary fibrous tumor occurring in the ocular adnexa (OA) in a single center. To assess the presence of NAB2-STAT6 genes fusion in OA solitary fibrous tumor detected by nuclear overexpression of STAT6. METHODS: Retrospective study including orbital and OA solitary fibrous tumors treated between 2006 and 2014 in our center. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings were evaluated. STAT6 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Five patients were identified and presented with a chronic OA mass. The tumors were radiologically well delimited, highly vascularized and without bone erosion. All the patients underwent complete surgical excision. Pathological examination confirmed solitary fibrous tumor in all cases. All tumors demonstrated a nuclear expression of STAT6. There were no recurrences, with a mean follow-up of 5 years after surgery. Our review demonstrated that proptosis was the most common presentation occurring in 60 % of the cases. In the ocular adnexa, adverse histological criteria were found in 19.7 % of the tumors, and recurrences were observed in 48 % of these cases. Thirty-six percent of patients presented at least one local recurrence, and metastastic spread was found in 2.4 % of the cases. Tumor-related death was described in two cases. CONCLUSION: Ocular adnexal SFT are rare and usually present as a chronic orbital mass with proptosis. In the OA, solitary fibrous tumor demonstrates STAT6 nuclear expression, as documented in other locations. Recurrences are unusual and metastasis exceptional. Initial surgical resection should be complete in order to avoid recurrence.

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to assess whether a model combining clinical factors, MR imaging features, and genomics would better predict overall survival of patients with glioblastoma (GBM) than either individual data type. METHODS: The study was conducted leveraging The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) effort supported by the National Institutes of Health. Six neuroradiologists reviewed MRI images from The Cancer Imaging Archive (http://cancerimagingarchive.net) of 102 GBM patients using the VASARI scoring system. The patients' clinical and genetic data were obtained from the TCGA website (http://www.cancergenome.nih.gov/). Patient outcome was measured in terms of overall survival time. The association between different categories of biomarkers and survival was evaluated using Cox analysis. RESULTS: The features that were significantly associated with survival were: (1) clinical factors: chemotherapy; (2) imaging: proportion of tumor contrast enhancement on MRI; and (3) genomics: HRAS copy number variation. The combination of these three biomarkers resulted in an incremental increase in the strength of prediction of survival, with the model that included clinical, imaging, and genetic variables having the highest predictive accuracy (area under the curve 0.679±0.068, Akaike's information criterion 566.7, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: A combination of clinical factors, imaging features, and HRAS copy number variation best predicts survival of patients with GBM.
