The use of artificial nest-boxes has led to significant progress in bird conservation and in our understanding of the functional and evolutionary ecology of free-ranging birds that exploit cavities for roosting and reproduction. Nest-boxes and their improved accessibility have made it easier to perform comparative and experimental field investigations. However, concerns about the generality and applicability of scientific studies involving birds breeding in nest-boxes have been raised because the occupants of boxes may differ from conspecifics occupying other nest sites. Here we review the existing evidence demonstrating the importance of nest-box design to individual life-history traits in three falcon (Falconiformes) and seven owl (Strigiformes) species, as well as the extent to which publications on these birds describe the characteristics of exploited artificial nest-boxes in their 'methods' sections. More than 60% of recent publications did not provide any details on nest-box design (e.g. size, shape, material), despite several calls >15 years ago to increase the reporting of such information. We exemplify and discuss how variation in nest-box characteristics can affect or confound conclusions from nest-box studies and conclude that it is of overall importance to present details of nest-box characteristics in scientific publications.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Recently, genetic variations in MICA (lead single nucleotide polymorphism [SNP] rs2596542) were identified by a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to be associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Japanese patients. In the present study, we sought to determine whether this SNP is predictive of HCC development in the Caucasian population as well. METHODS: An extended region around rs2596542 was genotyped in 1924 HCV-infected patients from the Swiss Hepatitis C Cohort Study (SCCS). Pair-wise correlation between key SNPs was calculated both in the Japanese and European populations (HapMap3: CEU and JPT). RESULTS: To our surprise, the minor allele A of rs2596542 in proximity of MICA appeared to have a protective impact on HCC development in Caucasians, which represents an inverse association as compared to the one observed in the Japanese population. Detailed fine-mapping analyses revealed a new SNP in HCP5 (rs2244546) upstream of MICA as strong predictor of HCV-related HCC in the SCCS (univariable p=0.027; multivariable p=0.0002, odds ratio=3.96, 95% confidence interval=1.90-8.27). This newly identified SNP had a similarly directed effect on HCC in both Caucasian and Japanese populations, suggesting that rs2244546 may better tag a putative true variant than the originally identified SNPs. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirms the MICA/HCP5 region as susceptibility locus for HCV-related HCC and identifies rs2244546 in HCP5 as a novel tagging SNP. In addition, our data exemplify the need for conducting meta-analyses of cohorts of different ethnicities in order to fine map GWAS signals.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term disease-free and overall survival of patients with sentinel lymph node (SLN) micrometastases, in whom a completion axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) was systematically omitted. BACKGROUND: The use of step sectioning and immunohistochemistry for SLN analysis results in a more accurate histopathologic examination and a higher detection rate of micrometastases. However, the clinical relevance and therapeutic implications of SLN micrometastases remain a matter of debate. METHODS: In this prospective study, 236 SLN biopsies were performed in 234 consecutive early-stage breast cancer patients (T1, T2 </= 3 cm, cN0 M0) between 1998 and 2002. The SLN were examined by step sectioning and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemistry. None of the patients with negative SLN or SLN micrometastases (International Union Against Cancer classification, >.2 mm to </=2 mm) underwent a completion ALND or radiation to the axilla. Long-term overall and disease-free survivals were compared between patients with negative SLN and those with SLN micrometastases by log rank tests. RESULTS: The SLN was negative in 55% of patients (123 of 224). SLN micrometastases were detected in 27 patients (27 of 224, 12%). After a median follow-up of 77 months (range, 24-106 months), neither locoregional recurrences nor distant metastases occurred in any of the 27 patients with SLN micrometastases. There were no statistically significant differences for overall (P = .656), locoregional (P = .174), and axillary and distant disease-free survival (P = .15) between patients with negative SLN and SLN micrometastases. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis of unselected patients provides evidence that a completion level I and II ALND may be safely omitted in early-stage breast cancer patients with SLN micrometastases.

Chemotherapy is widely used as a systemic treatment modality in cancer patients and provides survival benefits for a significant fraction of treated patients H However, some patients suffer from cancer relapse and rapidly progress to metastasis, suggesting that following chemotherapy their residual tumor developed a more aggressive phenotype 4 5. Although some molecular mechanisms involved in chemo-resistance and chemotherapy-induced metastatic relapse have been reported, more investigations and understanding of these processes are necessary before any translation into the clinic might be considered. By using the syngeneic metastatic 4T1 murine breast cancer model, we observed that chemotherapy treatment and selection of chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells in vitro can induces two opposite phenotypes: a dormant one and a relapsing-metastatic one. Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated that irradiation of mammary gland promotes tumor metastasis, at least in part, by inducing the recruitment of CD11b+ cells to both the primary tumor and the lungs at a pre-metastatic stage. In this study we found that CD11b+ cells may also play important roles in chemotherapy-induced tumor metastasis and dormancy in vivo. Tumor cells expressing the stem cell marker Sca-1 were enriched by chemotherapy treatment in vitro, as well as in tumor metastasis in vivo. Furthermore, tumor-derived CD11b+ cells were capable to maintain and expand this population in vitro. These results suggest that the expansion of a tumor cell population with stem cell features might be a mechanism by which chemotherapy induces metastasis. On the other hand, the same drug treatment in vitro generated resistant cells with a dormant phenotype. Dormant tumor cells were able to induce an in vivo immune- inflammatory response in the draining lymph node, which is normally absent due to the immunosuppressive effects of tumor-recruited myeloid derived- suppressor cells (MDSCs). Genome-wide gene expression analysis revealed the enrichment of invasion and metastasis-related genes in the relapsing metastatic tumor cells and immune response-related genes in the dormant tumor cells. Interestingly, CD11b+ cells derived from the microenvironment of growing-metastatic tumors, but not CD11b+ cells derived from the spleen of tumor-free mice, were able to instigate outgrowth of dormant tumor cells in vivo. Also, dormant cells formed growing and metastatic tumors when injected into immune-compromised NGS mice. These results point to a role of chemotherapy in enabling treated tumor cells to acquire immune response-inducing capabilities, while impairing the recruitment of CD11b+ cells and their differentiation into an immune-suppressive cell. The molecular mechanisms underneath these effects are being further investigated. In conclusion, results obtained in this model indicate that chemotherapy can induce a dormant phenotype in cancer cells and that this state of dormancy can be broken by MDSCs educated by relapsing tumors. Understanding the mechanism beyond these effects, in particular unraveling the genetic or epigenetic determinants of dormancy vs relapse, might open the way to therapies aimed and maintaining residual cells escaping chemotherapy in a state of sustained dormancy.

Agates from the Bighorn district in Montana (USA), the so-called Dryhead area, and their adjacent host rocks have been examined in the present study. Analyses by XRD, polarizing microscopy, LA-ICP-MS, cathodoluminescence (CL), SEM and of oxygen isotopes were performed to obtain information surrounding the genesis of this agate type. Investigations of the agate microstructure by polarizing microscopy and CL showed that chalcedony layers and macrocrystalline quartz crystals may have formed by crystallization from the same silica source by a process of self-organization. High defect densities and internal structures (e. g. sector zoning) of quartz indicate that crystallization went rapidly under non-equilibrium conditions. Most trace-element contents in macrocrystalline quartz are less than in chalcedony due to a process of `self-purification', which also caused the formation of Fe oxide inclusions and spherules. Although the agates formed in sedimentary host rocks, analytical data indicate participation of hydrothermal fluids during agate formation. Trace elements (REE distribution patterns, U contents up to 70 ppm) and CL features of agate (transient blue CL), as well as associated minerals (fluorite, REE carbonates) point to the influence of hydrothermal processes on the genesis of the Dryhead agates. However, formation temperatures <120 degrees C were calculated from O-isotope compositions between 28.9 parts per thousand (quartz) and 32.2 parts per thousand (chalcedony).

Adjuvants have been shown since many years to have an important role in enhancing the immune responses against the co-administered antigens used as vaccines. The continuous study of the mechanism of action of adjuvants is necessary to develop further safe and efficacious vaccines. Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) is currently in use as adjuvant to induce some autoimmune diseases in murine models, therefore the study of the mechanisms involved in the generation of the related immune responses could be instrumental for the understanding of the induction of inflammatory Thl7 responses. In the present work, we showed in C57B1/6 mice that CFA peripheral administration induces very early, at 6 h, a potent influx of CDllb+ cells, mainly neutrophils (CD11b+Ly6GhighLy6Cint) and monocytes (CD11b+Ly6GlowLy6Chigh), in the draining lymph node. By investigating the route by which neutrophils reach the lymph node we observed that, around 20% of them arrive from the afferent lymph and the majority stains positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We also observed a correlation between the influx of neutrophils and an increase in IL-23 and IL-Ιβ, together with several inflammatory chemokines, in the draining lymph node. Concomitantly, we detected the expression of the IL-23 receptor on CDllc+ DCs. Moreover, we confirmed the ability of murine neutrophils to express IL-23 both, in vitro by stimulating bone-marrow extracted PMNs with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and on total cells from draining lymph node by immunohistochemistry. We also observed by in vivo priming a reduction in the percentage of IFN-γ and CXCR3 expressing Τ cells upon depletion of neutrophils. Altogether, we show that upon stimulation from the periphery, the draining lymph node undergo changes in cytokine/chemokine production leading to the recruitment of different leukocytes subpopulations. Here we show that CFA induces a rapid influx of neutrophils which are responsible for the production of IL-23 that in turn influences the generation of Τ helper cells.

Percutaneous vertebro-plasty is an efficient treatment of the symptomatic vertebral compression fracture refractory to optimal medical therapy. The procedure is used for neoplastic lesions, aggressive angioma, but also osteoporotic compression fractures. In order to adequately advice our patients, it is essential to know its indications and possible complications. However, to practice a vertebro-plasty for an osteoporotic compression fracture without any long term management of the osteoporotic disease is useless. Unfortunately, it still happens too often and it is essential that orthopedic surgeons, general practitioner, radiologist, rheumatologist, and any practitioners work together to guarantee the optimal management of our patients.

Li contents [Li] and isotopic composition (delta Li-7) of mafic minerals (mainly amphibole and clinopyroxene) from the alkaline to peralkaline Ilimaussaq plutonic complex, South Greenland, track the behavior of Li and its isotopes during magmatic differentiation and final cooling of an alkaline igneous system. [Li] in amphibole increase from < 10 ppm in Caamphiboles of the least differentiated unit to >3000 ppm in Na-amphiboles of the highly evolved units. In contrast, [Li] in clinopyroxene are comparatively low (<85 ppm) and do not vary systematically with differentiation. The distribution of Li between amphibole and pyroxene is controlled by the major element composition of the minerals (Ca-rich and Na-rich, respectively) and changes in oxygen fugacity (due to Li incorporation via coupled substitution with ferric iron) during magmatic differentiation. delta(7) Li values of all minerals span a wide range from + 17 to - 8 parts per thousand, with the different intrusive units of the complex having distinct Li isotopic systematics. Amphiboles, which dominate the Li budget of whole-rocks from the inner part of the complex, have constant delta Li-7 of + 1.8 +/- 2.2 parts per thousand (2 sigma, n = 15). This value reflects a homogeneous melt reservoir and is consistent with their mantle derivation, in agreement with published O and Nd isotopic data. Clinopyroxenes of these samples are consistently lighter, with Delta Li-7(amph-cpx). as large as 8 parts per thousand and are thus not in Li isotope equilibrium. These low values probably reflect late-stage diffusion of Li into clinopyroxene during final cooling of the rocks, thus enriching the clinopyroxene in 6 Li. At the margin of the complex delta(7) Li in the syenites increases systematically, from +2 to high values of + 14 parts per thousand. This, coupled with the observed Li isotope systematics of the granitic country rocks, reflects post-magmatic open-system processes occurring during final cooling of the intrusion. Although the shape and magnitude of the Li isotope and elemental profiles through syenite and country rock are suggestive of diffusion-driven isotope fractionation, they cannot be modeled by one-dimensional diffusive transport and point to circulation of a fluid having a high 67 Li value (possibly seawater) along the chilled contact. In all, this study demonstrates that Li isotopes can be used to identify complex fluid- and diffusion-governed processes taking place during the final cooling of such rocks. INTRODUCTION: The EORTC 22922/10925 trial investigated the potential survival benefit and toxicity of elective irradiation of the internal mammary and medial supraclavicular (IM-MS) nodes Accrual completed in January 2004 and first results are expected in 2012. We present the toxicity reported until year 3 after treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: At each visit, toxicity was reported but severity was not graded routinely. Toxicity rates and performance status (PS) changes at three years were compared by chi(2) tests and logistic regression models in all the 3,866 of 4,004 patients eligible to the trial who received the allocated treatment. RESULTS: Only lung (fibrosis; dyspnoea; pneumonitis; any lung toxicities) (4.3% vs. 1.3%; p < 0.0001) but not cardiac toxicity (0.3% vs. 0.4%; p = 0.55) significantly increased with IM-MS treatment. No significant worsening of the PS was observed (p = 0.79), suggesting that treatment-related toxicity does not impair patient's daily activities. CONCLUSIONS: IM-MS irradiation seems well tolerated and does not significantly impair WHO PS at three years. A follow-up period of at least 10 years is needed to determine whether cardiac toxicity is increased after radiotherapy.

This thesis consists of four essays in equilibrium asset pricing. The main topic is investors' heterogeneity: I investigates the equilibrium implications for the financial markets when investors have different attitudes toward risk. The first chapter studies why expected risk and remuneration on the aggregate market are negatively related, even if intuition and standard theory suggest a positive relation. I show that the negative trade-off can obtain in equilibrium if investors' beliefs about economic fundamentals are procyclically biased and the market Sharpe ratio is countercyclical. I verify that such conditions hold in the real markets and I find empirical support for the risk-return dynamics predicted by the model. The second chapter consists of two essays. The first essay studies how het¬erogeneity in risk preferences interacts with other sources of heterogeneity and how this affects asset prices in equilibrium. Using perceived macroeconomic un¬certainty as source of heterogeneity, the model helps to explain some patterns of financial returns, even if heterogeneity is small as suggested by survey data. The second essay determines conditions such that equilibrium prices have analytical solutions when investors have heterogeneous risk attitudes and macroeconomic fundamentals feature latent uncertainty. This approach provides additional in-sights to the previous literature where models require numerical solutions. The third chapter studies why equity claims (i.e. assets paying a single future dividend) feature premia and risk decreasing with the horizon, even if standard models imply the opposite shape. I show that labor relations helps to explain the puzzle. When workers have bargaining power to exploit partial income insurance within the firm, wages are smoother and dividends are riskier than in a standard economy. Distributional risk among workers and shareholders provides a rationale to the equity short-term risk, which leads to downward sloping term structures of premia and risk for equity claim.
