Whether or not species participating in specialized and obligate interactions display similar and simultaneous demographic variations at the intraspecific level remains an open question in phylogeography. In the present study, we used the mutualistic nursery pollination occurring between the European globeflower Trollius europaeus and its specialized pollinators in the genus Chiastocheta as a case study. Explicitly, we investigated if the phylogeographies of the pollinating flies are significantly different from the expectation under a scenario of plant-insect congruence. Based on a large-scale sampling, we first used mitochondrial data to infer the phylogeographical histories of each fly species. Then, we defined phylogeographical scenarios of congruence with the plant history, and used maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches to test for plant-insect phylogeographical congruence for the three Chiastocheta species. We show that the phylogeographical histories of the three fly species differ. Only Chiastocheta lophota and Chiastocheta dentifera display strong spatial genetic structures, which do not appear to be statistically different from those expected under scenarios of phylogeographical congruence with the plant. The results of the present study indicate that the fly species responded in independent and different ways to shared evolutionary forces, displaying varying levels of congruence with the plant genetic structure

Long-chain alkanes are a major component of crude oil and therefore potentially good indicators of hydrocarbon spills. Here we present a set of new bacterial bioreporters and assays that allow to detect long-chain alkanes. These reporters are based on the regulatory protein AlkS and the alkB1 promoter from Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2, a widespread alkane degrader in marine habitats. Escherichia coli cells with the reporter construct reacted strongly to octane in short-term (6 h) aqueous suspension assays but very slightly only to tetradecane, in line with what is expected from its low water solubility. In contrast, long-term assays (up to 5 days) with A. borkumensis bioreporters showed strong induction with tetradecane and crude oil. Gel-immobilized A. borkumensis reporter cells were used to demonstrate tetradecane and crude oil bioavailability at a distance from a source. Alcanivorax borkumensis bioreporters induced fivefold more rapid and more strongly when allowed physical contact with the oil phase in standing flask assays, suggesting a major contribution of adhered cells to the overall reporter signal. Using the flask assays we further demonstrated the effect of oleophilic nutrients and biosurfactants on oil availability and degradation by A. borkumensis. The fluorescence signal from flask assays could easily be captured with a normal digital camera, making such tests feasible to be carried out on, e.g. marine oil responder vessels in case of oil accidents.

Deccan intertrappean sediments in central India are generally considered as terrestrial deposits of Maastrichtian age, but the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) position is still unknown. Here we report the discovery of the K-T transition, a marine incursion and environmental changes preserved within the intertrappean sediments at Jhilmili, Chhindwara District, Madhya Pradesh. Integrative biostratigraphic, sedimentologic, mineralogic and chemostratigraphic analyses reveal the basal Danian in the intertrappean sediments between lower and upper trap basalts that regionally correspond to C29r and the C29R/C29N transition, respectively. Intertrappean deposition occurred in predominantly terrestrial semi-humid to and environments. But a short aquatic interval of fresh water ponds and lakes followed by shallow coastal marine conditions with brackish marine ostracods and early Danian zone P1a planktic foraminifera mark this interval very close to the K-T boundary. This marine incursion marks the existence of a nearby seaway, probably extending inland from the west through the Narmada and Tapti rift valleys. The Jhilmili results thus identify the K-T boundary near the end of the main phase of Deccan eruptions and indicate that a major seaway extended at least 800 km across India. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Trace element and isotopic compositions of marine fossils and sediment were analyzed from several Miocene deposits in the circum-Alpine region in order to reconstruct the paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes related to sea level changes, basin evolution and Alpine orogeny. To the north and the east the Alps were border by an epicontinental sea, the Paratethys, while to the south the Mediterranean surrounded the uplifting mountains during the Miocene. The thesis mainly focused on sediments and fossils sampled from Miocene beds of these two oceanic provinces. The north Alpine Molasse, the Vienna and Pannonian Basins were located in the Western and Central Paratethys. O-isotope compositions of well-preserved phosphatic fossils in these sediments support deposition under sub-tropical to warm-temperate climate with water temperatures between 14 to 28 °C for the Miocene. δ18O values of fossil shark teeth from different horizons vary similarly to those of the global trend until the end of the Badenian, however the δ18O values show wider range, which indicates local effects iii the sub-basins. The trend of 87Sr/86Sr in the samples roughly agrees with an open ocean environment for the Miocene. Yet a number of samples deviate from typical open ocean compositions with higher ratios suggesting modification of seawater by local and old terrestrial sources. In contrast, two exceptional teeth from the locality of La Moliere have extremely low δ18O values and low 87Sr/86Sr. However, the REE patterns of their enameloid are similar to those of teeth having O and Sr isotopic compositions typical of a marine setting at this site. Collectively, this suggests that the two teeth formed while the sharks frequented a freshwater environment with very low 18O-content and 87Sr/86Sr controlled by Mesozoic calcareous rocks. This is consistent with a paleogeography of high-elevation (~2300m) Miocene Alps adjacent to a marginal sea. The local effects are also reflected in the εNd values of the Paratethyan fossils, which is compatible with input from ancient crystalline rocks and Mesozoic sediments, while other samples with elevated εNd values indicate an influence of Neogene volcanism on the water budget. Excluding samples whose isotopic compositions reflect a local influence on the water column, an average εNd value of -7.9 ± 0.5 may be inferred for the Paratethys seawater. This value is indistinguishable from the Miocene value of the Indian Ocean, supporting a dominant role of ludo-Pacific water masses in the Paratethys. Regarding the Mediterranean, stable C-and O-isotope compositions of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from the Umbria-Marche region (UMC) have an offset typical for their habitats and the changes in composition mimic global changes, suggesting that the regional conditions of climate and the carbon cycle were controlled by global changes. The radiogenic isotope compositions of the fossil assemblages allow for distinction of periods. From 25 to 19 Ma, high εNd values and low 87Sr/86Sr of sediments and fossils support intense tectonism and volcanism, related to the opening of the western Mediterranean. Between 19 and 13 Ma the Mediterranean has εNd values that are largely controlled by incursion of Indian Ocean water. Brief periods of local hinterland control on seawater compositions are indicated by spikes in the εNd record, coinciding with volcanic events and a short sea-level decrease at about 15.2 Ma. Lower 87Sr/86Sr compared to the open ocean is compatible with rapid uplift of the hinterland and intense influx of Sr from Mesozoic carbonates of the western Apennines, while higher 87Sr/86Sr for other sites indicates erosion of old crustal silicate rocks. Finally, from 13 to 7 Ma the fossils have 87Sr/86Sr similar to those of Miocene seawater and their εNd values indicates fluctuating influence of Atlantic, and Indian Ocean or Paratethys sources of seawater entering the Mediterranean, driven by global sealevel changes and local tectonism. RÉSUMÉ DE LA THÈSE Les compositions en éléments traces et isotopiques de fossiles marins et de sédiments on été analysées à partir de nombreux dépôts marins dans la région circum Alpine dans le but de reconstruire les changements paléocéanographiques et paléoclimatiques liés aux changements du niveau marin, à l'évolution en bassins et à l'orogénie alpine. Au nord et à l'est des Alpes, une mer épicontinentale appelée Paratéthys s'est ouverte, alors que plus au sud la mer Méditerranée bordait au Miocène les Alpes naissantes. Le but de cette recherche est de se concentrer sur les sédiments et les fossiles provenant des couches du Miocènes de ces deux provinces marines. Les bassins de la Molasse Alpine du nord, de Vienne et Pannonien étaient situés au niveau de la Paratéthys Occidentale et Centrale. Les compositions isotopiques de l'oxygène de fossiles phosphatés bien préservés dans ces sédiments étayent la théorie d'un dépôt sous un climat subtropical à tempéré chaud avec des températures entre 14 et 28°C pendant le Miocène. Les valeurs δ18O des fossiles sont similaires à la tendance globale jusqu'à la fin du Badénien. Cependant les larges fluctuations en δ18O indiquent des effets locaux au niveau des sous bassins. En outre, deux dents de requin exceptionnelles présentent des valeurs extrêmement basses de δ18O. Ces données suggèrent que ces deux dents se sont formées alors que les requins fréquentaient un environnement d'eau douce avec de faibles valeurs de 18O. Le calcul de la composition isotopique de l'oxygène de cette eau douce permet d'obtenir une estimation de la paléoélévatian moyenne des Alpes du Miocène (~2300m). La tendance 87Sr/86Sr pour ces échantillons concorde approximativement avec un environnement d'océan ouvert au cours du Miocène. Toutefois un nombre d'échantillons dévie des compositions d'océan ouvert typiques, avec des rapports élevés suggérant des modifications de l'eau de mer par des sources locales et terrestres. Les effets locaux sont aussi reflétés au niveau des valeurs en εNd des fossiles paratéthysiens. Ceci est cohérent avec un apport d'anciennes roches cristallines et de sédiments mésozoïques, tandis que d'autres échantillons avec des valeurs hautes de εNd indiquent une influence d'un volcanisme néogène dans le budget marin. En excluant les échantillons dont les compositions isotopiques confirment une influence locale, une valeur moyenne de εNd de 7.9 t 0.5 peut être déduite pour l'eau de la Parathétys. Cette valeur est semblable à la valeur correspondant à l'Océan Indien durant le Miocène, confirmant un rôle dominant de cet océan dans la Paratéthys. Au niveau de la Méditerranée, les compositions en isotopes stables du Carbone et de l'Oxygène de foraminifères planctoniques et benthique de la région Umbria-Marche présentent un offset typique à leurs habitats. De plus les changements dans leurs compositions suivent les changements globaux, suggérant ainsi que les conditions climatiques régionales et le cycle du carbone étaient contrôlés par des phénomènes globaux. La composition en isotopes radiogéniques d'assemblages fossiles permet une reconnaissance sur trois périodes distinctes. De 25 à 19 millions d'années (Ma), des valeurs élevées de εNd et un faible rapport 87Sr/86Sr dans les sédiments soutiennent l'idée d'une activité tectonique et volcanique intense, liée à l'ouverture de la Méditerranée occidentale. Entre 19 et 13 Ma, la Méditerranée montre des valeurs de εNd qui sont largement contrôlées par une incursion d'eau provenant de l'Océan Indien. En effet, aux alentours de 15,2 Ma, des pics dans l'enregistrement des valeurs de εNd, coïncidant avec des événements volcaniques et de brèves diminutions du niveau marin. Enfin, de 13 à 7 Ma, les fossiles ont des rapports ß7Sr/8fiSr similaires à ceux de l'eau de mer au Miocène. Leurs valeurs de εNd indiquent une influence changeante de l'océan Atlantique, et de l'océan Indien ou des sources d'eau de merde la Parathétys qui entrent dans les bassins méditerranéens. Ce changement est guidé par des modifications globales du niveau marin et par la tectonique locale. RÉSUMÉ DE LA THÈSE (POUR LE GRAND PUBLIC) Les analyses des compositions en éléments traces et isotopiques des fossiles marins sont un outil très utile pour reconstruire les conditions océaniques et climatiques anciennes. Ce travail de thèse se concentre sur les sédiments déposés dans un environnement marin proches des Alpes au cours du Miocène, entre 23 et 7 millions d'années (Ma). Cette période est caractérisée par une tectonique alpine active, ainsi que par des changements climatiques et océanographiques globaux importants. Dans le but de tracer ces changements, les compositions isotopiques du Strontium, du Néodyme, de l'Oxygène et du Carbone ont été analysées dans des fossiles bien préservés ainsi que les sédiments contemporains. Les échantillons proviennent de deux provinces océaniques distinctes, la première est la Mer Méditerranée, et l'autre est une mer épicontinentale appelée Parathétys, qui existait au nord et à l'est des Alpes durant le Miocène. Au niveau de la Parathétys Occidentale et Orientale, les compositions isotopiques d'oxygène de dents de requins confirment un dépôt sous un climat subtropical à tempéré chaud avec des températures d'eau entre 14 et 28°C au Miocène. En outre, deux dents de requins exceptionnelles ont enregistré des compositions isotopiques d'oxygène extrêmement basses. Cela suggère que ces deux dents se sont formées alors que les requins entraient dans un système d'eau douce. Le calcul de la composition isotopique de l'oxygène de cette eau douce permet d'obtenir une estimation de la paléoélévation des Alpes au Miocène qui est aussi élevée que celle d'aujourd'hui. La tendance isotopique du Strontium pour ces échantillons concorde approximativement avec un environnement d'océan ouvert. Cependant un certain nombre d'échantillons indique des modifications de l'eau de mer par des sources terrestres locales. Les effets locaux sont aussi visibles au niveau des compositions isotopiques du Néodyme, qui sont en accord avec un apport provenant de roches cristallines anciennes et de sédiments du Mésozoïque, alors que d'autres échantillons indiquent une influence volcanique néogène dans le budget marin. A l'exclusion des échantillons dont les compositions correspondent à une influence locale, les compositions isotopiques du Néodyme de la Parathétys sont très similaires aux valeurs de l'Océan Indien, montrant ainsi un rôle important des masses d'eau IndoPacifiques dans cette région. Au niveau de la Méditerranée, les compositions en isotopes stables du Carbone et de l'Oxygène de foraminifères planctoniques et benthique de la région Umbria-Marche présentent un offset typique à leurs habitats. De plus, les changements dans leurs compositions suivent les changements globaux, suggérant ainsi que les conditions climatiques régionales et le cycle du carbone étaient contrôlés par des phénomènes globaux. The end-Permian mass extinction greatly diminished marine diversity and brought about a whole-scale restructuring of marine ecosystems; these ecosystem changes also profoundly affected the sedimentary record. Data presented here, attained through facies analyses of strata deposited during the immediate aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction (southern Turkey) and at the close of the Early Triassic (southwestern United States), in combination with a literature review, show that sedimentary systems were profoundly affected by: (1) a reduction in biotic diversity and abundance and (2) long-term environmental fluctuations that resulted from the end-Permian crisis. Lower Triassic strata display widespread microbialite and carbonate seafloor fan development and contain indicators of suppressed infaunal bioturbation such as flat-pebble conglomerates and wrinkle structures (facies considered unusual in post-Cambrian subtidal deposits). Our observations suggest that depositional systems, too, respond to biotic crises, and that certain facies may act as barometers of ecologic and environmental change independent of fossil assemblage analyses. Close investigation of facies changes during other critical times in Earth history may serve as an important tool in interpreting the ecology of metazoans and their environment.

In order to contribute to the debate about southern glacial refugia used by temperate species and more northern refugia used by boreal or cold-temperate species, we examined the phylogeography of a widespread snake species (Vipera berus) inhabiting Europe up to the Arctic Circle. The analysis of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in 1043 bp of the cytochrome b gene and in 918 bp of the noncoding control region was performed with phylogenetic approaches. Our results suggest that both the duplicated control region and cytochrome b evolve at a similar rate in this species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that V. berus is divided into three major mitochondrial lineages, probably resulting from an Italian, a Balkan and a Northern (from France to Russia) refugial area in Eastern Europe, near the Carpathian Mountains. In addition, the Northern clade presents an important substructure, suggesting two sequential colonization events in Europe. First, the continent was colonized from the three main refugial areas mentioned above during the Lower-Mid Pleistocene. Second, recolonization of most of Europe most likely originated from several refugia located outside of the Mediterranean peninsulas (Carpathian region, east of the Carpathians, France and possibly Hungary) during the Mid-Late Pleistocene, while populations within the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas fluctuated only slightly in distribution range, with larger lowland populations during glacial times and with refugial mountain populations during interglacials, as in the present time. The phylogeographical structure revealed in our study suggests complex recolonization dynamics of the European continent by V. berus, characterized by latitudinal as well as altitudinal range shifts, driven by both climatic changes and competition with related species.

The nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) occurs in a large part of the south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. Phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed for a total of 59 specimens using sequences from three mitochondrial regions (16S and cytochrome b genes, and control region, totalling 2308 bp). A considerable number of clades were observed within this species, showing a large genetic diversity within the Balkan peninsula. Splitting of the basal clades was evaluated to about 4 million years ago. Genetic results are in contradiction with presently accepted taxonomy based on morphological characters: V. a. gregorwallneri and V. a. ruffoi do not display any genetic difference compared with the nominotypic subspecies (V. a. ammodytes), involving that these subspecies can be regarded as synonyms. High genetic divergence in the central part of the Balkan peninsula is not concordant with low morphological differentiation. Finally, the extensive genetic diversity within the Balkan peninsula and the colonisation routes are discussed

The Quaternary cold periods in Europe are thought to have heavily influenced the amount and distribution of intraspecific genetic variation in both animals and plants. The phylogeographies of 10 taxa, including mammals (Ursus arctos, Sorex spp., Crocidura suaveolens, Arvicola spp.), amphibians (Triturus spp.), arthropods (Chorthippus parallelus), and plants (Abies alba, Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus spp.), were analysed to elucidate general trends across Europe. Only a small degree of congruence was found amongst the phylogeographies of the 10 taxa, but the likely postglacial colonization routes exhibit some similarities. A Brooks parsimony analysis produced an unrooted area phylogram, showing that: (i) the northern regions were colonized generally from the Iberic and Balkanic refugia; and (ii) the Italian lineages were often isolated due to the presence of the Alpine barrier. The comparison of colonization routes highlighted four main suture-zones where lineages from the different refugia meet. Some of the intraspecific genetic distances among lineages indicated a prequaternary divergence that cannot be connected to any particular cold period, but are probably related mainly to the date of arrival of each taxon in the European continent. As a consequence, molecular genetics so far appears to be of limited use in dating Quaternary events.

Fossil bones and teeth of Late Pleistocene terrestrial mammals from Rhine River gravels (RS) and the North Sea (NS), that have been exposed to chemically and isotopically distinct diagenetic fluids (fresh water versus seawater), were investigated to study the effects of early diagenesis on biogenic apatite. Changes in phosphate oxygen isotopic composition (delta O-18(PO4)), nitrogen content (wt.% N) and rare earth element (REE) concentrations were measured along profiles within bones that have not been completely fossilized, and in skeletal tissues (bone, dentine, enamel) with different susceptibilities to diagenetic alteration. Early diagenetic changes of elemental and isotopic compositions of apatite in fossil bone are related to the loss of the stabilizing collagen matrix. The REE concentration is negatively correlated with the nitrogen content, and therefore the amount of collagen provides a sensitive proxy for early diagenetic alteration. REE patterns of RS and NS bones indicate initial fossilization in a fresh water fluid with similar REE compositions. Bones from both settings have nearly collagen-free, REE-, U-, F- and Sr-enriched altered outer rims, while the collagen-bearing bone compacta in the central part often display early diagenetic pyrite void-fillings. However, NS bones exposed to Holocene seawater have outer rim delta O-18(PO4) values that are 1.1 to 2.6 parts per thousand higher compared to the central part of the same bones (delta O-18(PO4) = 18.2 +/- 0.9 parts per thousand, n = 19). Surprisingly, even the collagen-rich bone compacta with low REE contents and apatite crystallinity seems altered, as NS tooth enamel (delta O-18(PO4) =15.0 +/- 0.3 parts per thousand, n=4) has about 3%. lower delta O-18(PO4) values, values that are also similar to those of enamel from RS teeth. Therefore, REE concentration, N content and apatite crystallinity are in this case only poor proxies for the alteration of delta O-18(PO4) values. Seawater exposure of a few years up to 8 kyr can change the delta O-18(PO4) values of the bone apatite by > 3 parts per thousand. Therefore, bones fossilized in marine settings must be treated with caution for palaeoclimatic reconstructions. However, enamel seems to preserve pristine delta O-18(PO4) values on this time scale. Using species-specific calibrations for modern mammals, a mean delta O-18(H2O) value can be reconstructed for Late Pleistocene mammalian drinking water of around -9.2 +/- 0.5 parts per thousand, which is similar to that of Late Pleistocene groundwater from central Europe. The major intention of the present study was to investigate whether an approach combining the use of niche-based palaeodistribution modeling and phylo-geography would support or modify hypotheses about the Quaternary distributional history derived from phylogeographic methods alone. Our study system comprised two closely related species of Alpine Primula. We used species distribution models based on the extant distribution of the species and last glacial maximum (LGM) climate models to predict the distribution of the two species during the LGM. Phylogeographic data were generated using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs). In Primula hirsuta, models of past distribution and phylogeographic data are partly congruent and support the hypothesis of widespread nunatak survival in the Central Alps. Species distribution models (SDMs) allowed us to differentiate between alpine regions that harbor potential nunatak areas and regions that have been colonized from other areas. SDMs revealed that diversity is a good indicator for nunataks, while rarity is a good indicator for peripheral relict populations that were not source for the recolonization of the inner Alps. In P. daonensis, palaeo-distribution models and phylogeographic data are incongruent. Besides the uncertainty inherent to this type of modeling approach (e.g., relatively coarse 1-km grain size), disagreement of models and data may partly be caused by shifts of ecological niche in both species. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the combination of palaeo-distribution modeling with phylogeographical approaches provides a more differentiated picture of the distributional history of species and partly supports (P. hirsuta) and partly modifies (P. daonensis and P. hirsuta) hypotheses of Quaternary distributional history. Some of the refugial area indicated by palaeodistribution models could not have been identified with phylogeographic data.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that the presence of mesoscopic heterogeneities constitutes an important seismic attenuation mechanism in porous rocks. As a consequence, centimetre-scale perturbations of the rock physical properties should be taken into account for seismic modelling whenever detailed and accurate responses of specific target structures are desired, which is, however, computationally prohibitive. A convenient way to circumvent this problem is to use an upscaling procedure to replace each of the heterogeneous porous media composing the geological model by corresponding equivalent visco-elastic solids and to solve the visco-elastic equations of motion for the inferred equivalent model. While the overall qualitative validity of this procedure is well established, there are as of yet no quantitative analyses regarding the equivalence of the seismograms resulting from the original poro-elastic and the corresponding upscaled visco-elastic models. To address this issue, we compare poro-elastic and visco-elastic solutions for a range of marine-type models of increasing complexity. We found that despite the identical dispersion and attenuation behaviour of the heterogeneous poro-elastic and the equivalent visco-elastic media, the seismograms may differ substantially due to diverging boundary conditions, where there exist additional options for the poro-elastic case. In particular, we observe that at the fluid/porous-solid interface, the poro- and visco-elastic seismograms agree for closed-pore boundary conditions, but differ significantly for open-pore boundary conditions. This is an important result which has potentially far-reaching implications for wave-equation-based algorithms in exploration geophysics involving fluid/porous-solid interfaces, such as, for example, wavefield decomposition.

Using one male-inherited, one female-inherited and eight biparentally inherited markers, we investigate the population genetic structure of the Valais shrew (Sorex antinorii) in the Swiss Alps. Bayesian analysis on autosomal microsatellites suggests a clear genetic differentiation between two groups of populations. This geographically based structure is consistent with two separate postglacial recolonization routes of the species into Switzerland from Italian refugia after the last Pleistocene glaciations. Sex-specific markers also confirm genetic structuring among western and eastern areas, since very few haplotypes for either Y chromosome or mtDNA genome are shared between the two regions. Overall, these results suggest that two already well-differentiated genetic lineages colonized the Swiss Alps and came into secondary contact in the Rhône Valley. Low level of admixture between the two lineages is likely explained by the mountainous landscape structure of lateral valleys orthogonal to the main Rhône valley.

The Paratethys evolved as a marginal sea during the Alpine-Himalayan orogeny in the Oligo-Miocene. Sediments from the northern Alpine Molasse Basin, the Vienna, and the Pannonian Basins located in the western and central part of the Paratethys thus provide unique information on regional changes in climate and oceanography during a period of active Alpine uplift Oxygen isotope compositions of well-preserved phosphatic fossils recovered from the sediments support deposition under sub-tropical to warm-temperate climate with water temperatures of 14 to 28 degrees C for the Miocene. delta(18)O values of fossil shark teeth are similar to those reported for other Miocene marine sections and, using the best available estimates of their biostratigraphic age, show a variation until the end of the Badenian similar to that reported for composite global record. The (87)Sr/(86)Sr isotope ratios of the fossils follow the global Miocene seawater trend, albeit with a much larger scatter. The deviations of (87)Sr/(86)Sr in the samples from the well-constrained seawater curve are interpreted as due to local input of terrestrially-derived Sr. Contribution of local sources is also reflected in the epsilon(Nd) values, consistent with input from ancient crystalline rocks (e.g., Bohemian Massif and/or Mesozoic sediments with epsilon(Nd) < -9. On the other hand, there is evidence for input from areas with Neogene volcanism as suggested by samples with elevated epsilon(Nd) values >-7. Excluding samples showing local influence on the water column, an average epsilon(Nd) value of -7.9 +/- 0.5 may be inferred for the Miocene Paratethys. This value is indistinguishable from the epsilon(Nd) value of the contemporaneous Indian Ocean, supporting a dominant role of this ocean in the Western and Central Paratethys. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. In specific and obligate interactions the nature and abundance of a given species can have important effects on the survival and population dynamics of associated organisms. In a phylogeographic framework, we therefore expect that the fates of organisms interacting specifically are also tightly interrelated. Here we investigate such a scenario by analyzing the genetic structures of species interacting in an obligate plant-insect pollination lure-and-trap antagonism, involving Arum maculatum (Araceae) and its specific psychodid (Diptera) visitors Psychoda phalaenoides and Psycha grisescens. Because the interaction is asymmetric (i.e., only the plant depends on the insect), we expect the genetic structure of the plant to be related with the historical pollinator availability, yielding incongruent phylogeographic patterns between the interacting organisms.Using insect mtDNA sequences and plant AFLP genome fingerprinting, we inferred the large-scale phylogeographies of each species and the distribution of genetic diversities throughout the sampled range, and evaluated the congruence in their respective genetic structures using hierarchical analyses of molecular variances (AMOVA). Because the composition of pollinator species varies in Europe, we also examined its association with the spatial genetic structure of the plant.Our findings indicate that while the plant presents a spatially well-defined genetic structure, this is not the case in the insects. Patterns of genetic diversities also show dissimilar distributions among the three interacting species. Phylogeographic histories of the plant and its pollinating insects are thus not congruent, a result that would indicate that plant and insect lineages do not share the same glacial and postglacial histories. However, the genetic structure of the plant can, at least partially, be explained by the type of pollinators available at a regional scale. Differences in life-history traits of available pollinators might therefore have influenced the genetic structure of the plant, the dependent organism, in this antagonistic interaction.

Isotopic and trace element compositions of Miocene and Pliocene phosphatic brachiopods (Lingulidae and Discinidae) from southern North Sea, the Central Paratethys and the Atlantic coast of Europe were investigated in order to trace past environmental conditions and marine connections between the northern boreal and the southern subtropical-tropical marine basins. The North Sea genus Glottidia yielded low epsilon(Nd) and high delta O-18(PO4) values through the Mio-Pliocene indicating cold habitat temperature where the local seawater was dominated by the Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, the Middle Miocene Lingulidae and Discinidae of the Paratethys inhabited warm subtropical seawater with the possible influence of the Indian Ocean via the Mediterranean, as supported by their average epsilon(Nd) value of -8.3. The combined geochemical data support a thermal and marine separation of the Paratethys from the North Sea with no direct connection or major exchange of water from the Miocene onwards. The temperature in the Paratethys was very similar to that inferred from brachiopods from the Middle Miocene of western France, but the seawater epsilon(Nd) value here is identical to that of contemporaneous Atlantic Ocean. A Late Miocene lingulid brachiopod from southern Portugal has a high delta O-18(PO4), similar to the specimens investigated from the North Sea, reflecting either a deep water habitat or formation after the onset of major global cooling that resulted in an increased delta O-18 value of seawater. The epsilon(Nd) value of -8.4 for this site is compatible with an influence of Mediterranean outflow. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
